'You Know You're a True Child of the 80s When...' uncovers some unmistakable signs that you really are an 80s child through and through. From adventures at the video shop and buying hairspray in bulk, to dancing to proper music at nightclubs and risking injury playing Daley Thompson's Decathlon, this is a nostalgic voyage through the vibrant decade that was the 1980s.

I'm a true 80's kid too and it's rubbed off onto my grown up children. Their favourite films are the Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller as I've watched them over and over again. My son is at uni studying a degree in music - his band played songs from Live Aid a few months ago - he even bought vintage stonewashed jeans to wear on stage 🤣. The 80's were the best ❣

I’ve been listening to it and it takes me straight back to the 1980s - who remembers It’s All Right by Sterling Void? (1987), also covered by the Pet Shop Boys. I bet nobody remembers that song, but it is a timeless masterpiece, still sounding as great now in 2024, as it did in 1987 when it was released.

Hahahaha.... I watched Jacko's "Thriller" video after a night out in "Rotter's" nighclub in Liverpool (it was after all "The hot-shot nightspot that's got the lot") as I'm slightly ashamed to say I was 15/16 years old when I first went in there (being over 6ft as a young lad, and after putting on a deep voice to get in of course) ... I'd got mum to stay up to record it on the Ferguson Videostar when it was first played late night on the telly (obviously I'd not "copped off" that night !!!). I actually now live just around the corner from where "Big Daddy" (Shirley Crabtree) lived in Southport... though obviously in the 80s I never knew that would come to pass. And I was one of the poorer kids... I actually started on the "ZX81" (don't even get me started about the instablility of the 16k "rampak" !!!) before moving onto the Speccy with games cassettes from "down the local market", later after getting my first wages moving onto buying legit games from WH Smiths big store on Church st Liverpool.... but my two best mates both had commodore 64s. Grrrrrr. Christmas began when mum brought the 2 week Christmas editions of the "TV times" and "Radio Times" home, racing through the listings to plan out what we were all going to watch. I was too much of a "bigman" for the "Beano" and "Dandy" and instead read "Warlord" & "Battle" comics (and those fantastic mini "commando" books)... though the REALLY "bigmen" used to read 2000AD. Smiles and happy memories all the way through another of your vids Stu... Thanks once again.

Okay, some of that was the 70s. I grew up in NZ and only moved to the UK in '86 but I remember watching Big Daddy and Haystack although I thought it was in the 70s on a late Saturday afternoon on my grandparent's telly in NZ. I do know that my cousin had an Apricot computer (still does in fact and it still works) and he had a flight simulator on it at the end of the 80s. I discovered Arctic Roll in 1986 and it was love at first taste, still is. Harder to find but still my favourite dessert by miles. We had Dukes of Hazard in NZ and I think Sons and Daughters as well but it was on well before school was out from memory. My brother had a Spectrum which he hooked up to the telly to play games on and I even remember we had the shake'n'vac add as well (ye Gods, bringing back the memories) and while we didn't have the Woollies adverts I did recognise the Goodies in there. I remember bully as well, watching that at my grandparents in the evening (I lived with them when I first moved back to the UK) and the other one, my favourite, was 3 2 1 with Dusty Bin. I was never a Michael Jackson fan, I preferred Andy Steward and Val Doonican (weird I know) who were on the telly in the afternoons (must watch if I was home ill from school or work) and I definitely remember both the pencil and cassette tapes as well as people not rewinding the videos from the rental shop. I also worked in a nightclub at the end of the 80s and I remember all the dance music, yes you could dance to it in those days which you can't with the modern stuff. Thank you for the memories both from the start of the 80s in NZ and the end of the 80s in the UK, it was a great decade (as was the 70s for that matter, remember that one as well) and I don't think the films or the shows on the telly have improved over the years since then. I still enjoy watching many of the shows and films from that era, great stuff.

I grew up in the 80’s. I couldn’t wait to get home from school and sit glued to the telly for three hours watching my favourite kids telly. Friday’s was a bag of pick n mix and a comic which kept me happy over the weekend. I’d visit my grandparents in Birmingham and then visit the localWoolworths for the pic n mix and maybe buy some Lego our a board game to play with my relatives. I didn’t have a game console, so I loved visiting my mates homes and playing on the Commodore or Atari. And I loved watching 80’s sci-fi movies, my all time favourite being Back to the Future, must have watched that about 50 times since. Good times.

I was an 80's teenager, so a lot of what was mentioned rings true, to a point. There's obviously going to be some discrepancies involved, though. I don't remember ever watching any pirated videos, apart from one, but I won't mention that, as this is a family orientated channel! I remember rushing home from school to watch the opening of Channel 4, due to the sheer novelty of having an extra channel to watch. It lasted until the news came on at 7pm. I never regretted watching the first few hours, though. I don't think I ever had an artic roll, never mind put it at the top of the list as favourite. I started off with a ZX81, (but having got to use a Spectrum of a friend's at the time), soon changed ship and got into the ViC-20 and 64, due to the proper keyboard and sound that came out of the TV speaker, rather than some tiny noise out of the bottom of the computer case. As a teenager, my brew of choice was Carling Black Label, but soon grew out of it. Although, prior to being old enough to drink, I would think Barbican, (which was one of those non-alcoholic lagers), gained a bit of popularity, in that it made you feel a bit more grown-up, drinking it. I would add Andy's Records to the list of record shops that were often frequented during the 80's. Boots had a surprisingly good selection of LPs for what was a shop that primarily a pharmacist, (not all of them, I know), and sold mostly household items. WH Smiths was the one for computer magazines. Woolworth's Christmas ads were different in that they were considerable longer than the usual 15 of 30 seconds allotted. I think they filled in the entire 3 minutes of an advertising break, from what I remember. Only in the early 80's, though. I think they stopped doing them after about '83. I do remember watching, 'Sons & Daughters', but not when broadcast. I would never get home from school in time to see it, as it was scheduled at 3.30pm, (I think), and school didn't kick out till 3.45. Instead, I had the luxury of watching it later on in the evening, thanks to it having been recorded on what was then a new fangled, top-loading, rented video recorder, using the tape that came with it, which must have had at least a 1000 recordings over the first hour or so of the tape, bar the odd occasion when you forget to rewind it at the end of the night. That particular show ran on ITV from about '83 to '87, and was one of the Aussie soaps that started off the craze for them that lasted into the 90's. 'Neighbours', being the one everyone remembers. Not to mention Prisoner: Cell Block H! The, 'Shake And Vac', advert was another very early 80's, even late 70's, thing. It gained popularity for a short while. I was far too interested in the groovy, often quirky music that accompanied the test card to really care too much about it. Although, by the 80's, they opted to show, 'pages from Ceefax', rather than the static picture of Carole playing noughts and crosses with Bubbles, her clown doll. It's true enough to say that the 80's was a decade I remember with a certain degree of fondness. Although, nostalgia does play a role in it, as it wasn't all sunshine and roses.

My choice of computers were the Sinclair ZX81 followed by the Amstrad CpC 464 and spent the best part of an hour waiting for a game to load then 5 minutes to go you get loading error please try again

Ah yes, the dreaded loading error. Always made even more frustrating when you were playing a multi-event game where each event loaded separately. You'd play through all events, get to the last one and then...loading error!

Remember most of these but hated the 80s especially the music. Definitley a 70s child when things werent taken so serious. Plus the music was much better
