Definitely didn’t look as bad as A-Rod.. and nobody can tell from the camera view what really happened. Gotta go with the guy looking at it and that guy called Phill out…

Safe. Gotta tag up high to avoid the arms. If you tag shoulder high, and the runner swipes at your glove, it looks intentional. This is equivalent to sliding into a tag and knocking the ball out, only the runner was upright. It may have been intentional, but that’s going to be tough to prove seeing it once at game speed.

Based on the only angles we see I say everyone is safe, because I cannot clearly see if the runner purposely tried to pull an A-Rod or the ball was just knocked loose on the tag attempt. Maybe another angle would change my mind, but the runner does not appear (to me) to have purposely swatted at the fielder's glove. In fact it looks like he just pulled his shoulder and elbow in across his own chest as a natural reaction to the tag.

Exactly, idk how some people in the comments are claiming he swats at the ball. There's no clear view to confirm that.

@@Odd1006 It's always amazing to me how multiple people can look at the same video and see completely different things. Not saying they, or I are 100% right, but it's still kinda crazy how there can be completely opposite views on the same thing. People just see what they want to see I guess.

I think he is safe. The fielder had the choice to throw it to 2nd, but he chose to go into the runners path and risk the tag.

Interference on runner. He and the batter should be out as fielder could have tagged first base ahead of runner.

I'd say safe, it's not like the runner went out of his way to knock the ball out. 2B went to tag and the ball got knocked out.

Look at where the game is at. Tied in the bottom of the last inning with no outs. If it happens in the second inning maybe it’s not intentional but in this spot I’m not letting them get the winning run on third when there’s any chance the runner swiped at the ball. And it for sure looks like he does it intentionally.

Definitely Safe. Baserunner has right to the base path wherever his “arms” go. 1st basemen did not secure the ball. And you can’t overturn the turn given the angles.

I would say out from the looks we get here. The move at Branch's glove looks intentional. Not much the home plate umpire can do there with no angle. Field umps call would be the final in my opinion. DW what was the call on the field?

Field ump called an out on the tag. Then the umps and uic got together and said everyone was safe giving the runners 1st and 2nd.

No he swung and knocked it out of the glove with his hand. That runner is out and and the ball is declared dead. Also the proceeding runner is out as well. The rule states he must be attempting to stop a double play. I just looked the rule up. Phil Matte why try and purposely knock the ball out of the glove. If you look at the very end of the tag you can see his arm come up as to look like he swung.

He didn’t swing and knock the ball out lol. He tucked his arms in when he tagged him. The 1b tagged him and tried to hurry and get to first. That’s a bad call

There is no absolute definitive look. Anyone who is positive one way or another should stop. I do think we can reasonably assume he intentionally knocked the ball away but that’s just an assumption. The ump behind second had a good look. I’ll probably go with his call.

You are correct. I looked the rule up. He did try and knock the ball out. The way everyone responded after the fact tells me they all saw him do it and immediately let the umpire know.
