I think it's weird that bike tires cost as much as low-end car tires, but don't last anywhere near as long as those cheap car tires do.
@jensonusabicycles
@jensonusabicycles 2 месяца назад
Yeah, a lot of tires definitely aren't cheap these days, but there are a lot of good affordable options out there. Definitely check out Specialized tires, they're surprisingly affordable and ride great. We have a link to some in the description.

To answer a bit of the question weight does have a huge traction advantage if bicycle tires had the same hardness, durable, compound (some city bikes have) you find on cars and motorcycles you wouldn't have traction because you're not applying enough pressure grip...
@LaurentiusTriarius

@@jensonusabicycles it would be interesting if you have access to that info to know where and by who specialized tires are made they struck some exclusive deal with a Japanese motorcycle and utility tire manufacturer I wonder if that's still true...

I think you got the casing thread count backwards. 120 TPI is softer and more supple than 60 TPI.

I haven't tried the new Continentals yet, but I'm loving my current set up: Maxxis Assagai EXO+ 2.5 MaxxTerra up front and a Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.6 SuperTrail in the Speedgrip out back. Front is perfectly dialed in, back is a little looser and bouncy fun.

@@playgroundchooser right on, sounds fun! I had the speedgrip hans dampf 2.6 on my hardtail but in the front. It was nice as long as it was dry. Had the 2.35 soft in the rear of my enduro but didnt like it, just very slow rolling for the amount of grip offered. Super trail casing is awesome though perfect mix of compliance and durability.

FWIW, at 4:10 You said the exact opposite of what tire casing TPI is. The higher thread count tires are the more supple tires, the low thread counts are the stiffer a bit heavier and generally more puncture resistant tires. This is why race tires tend to be high TPI and training tires are low TPI. The high thread count tires use much thinner threads that need encased in less rubber, for a lighter more supple ride. If they add puncture resistant layers or armored sidewalls that's a whole other issue but not the general TPI characteristics of a tire.

I'm using the eliminator (I've butchered the butcher though) and i am highly impressed! They came stock on my Stumpjumper and my initial thoughts were that they weren't going to be good. I'm glad i was wrong. I might continue with this combo since it doesn't cost as much as other brands, they have loads of grip, they're predictable and they get the job done.

I just switched from Assegai/DHR combo to Kryptotals front and rear. My main takes on them so far. The Kryptotals roll noticeably faster, the Kryptotal rear is the best rear tire I've ever run, the Kryptotal front is good, but I won't say it's necessarily better than the Assegai, but it isn't worse than the Assegai either. The other thing I've noticed is the Contis seem to prefer about 3psi lower tire pressures than Maxxis as their casings are quite stiff. I'm running DH/Super Soft front and DH/Soft rear on my Kryptotals.
@jensonusabicycles

Thanks for this comment! I've been considering trying the Kryptotal's, but it's a gamble. I trust and love the Assegai up front and DHR II in the rear so it's hard to commit to trying something new that I might not end up liking. Good to hear from someone who swapped and really likes the change!

I have the stock tires on a stumpy Evo, and while the grip is amazing I almost think it’s too much. Rolling resistance is so high that I have to down shift more often and more gears to maintain the same speed as a maxxis setup. I realize the Evo isn’t a xc race bike but I would be interested in any other Evo riders to see if they switched to maxxis or continental kryptotals if it was a faster rolling bike.
@jensonusabicycles
@jensonusabicycles 18 дней назад
Really soft, grippy rubber will definitely do that to you. It's a trade off... Either really great grip in slippery terrain, or less grip with stiffer rubber but faster rolling. We hear that Continentals are grippy and still roll fast, so maybe give those a try and see what happens.

@jensonusabicycles
@jensonusabicycles 2 месяца назад
They'll do the job really well at an affordable cost. Hardtails already pedal nicely so having a wider 2.6 won't be too brutal, just have to make sure your frame will allow it.

why does everyone over complicate tires?
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 3 месяца назад
Because it's your main point of contact with the ground. They can have a huge effect on your riding enjoyment. It's nice having tires that don't wash out on loose corners and hold their line through tech, and not constantly getting flats. Or if you're more XC inclined, tires that don't feel like you attached a boat anchor to your bike.
@barfo281
@barfo281 2 месяца назад
@@mrvwbug4423 That's fine, but the idea of having one fast-rolling tire on your bike increasing your speed is ludicrous, you'll only be as fast as your slowest rolling tire.
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 2 месяца назад
@@barfo281 That would be an oversimplification. On downhills a grippier tire can be faster by virtue of more grip and having to brake less and later.
