Travel Vlog #85 | El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

Our first taste of trekking, or hiking, in Patagonia came while we were staying in El Calafate and did a day tour out to one of the most isolated areas of the Southern Patagonian Ice field - Estancia Cristina. This estancia is only accessible by boat, seeing as no roads lead to the estancia. After a 2-3 boat tour across Lago Argentino, through icebergs, past the Upsala glacier, and across turquoise waters, we arrived at the estancia. In addition to the hike itself, a highlight was the 4x4 ride to the Upsala Glacier overlook that is at the start of the trek - the overlook is fabulous to see and the ride up to it was invigorating and beautiful. After making it through the bumpy ride, and a short 20 minute trek, we were rewarded with our first incredible view of the day, the Upsala Glacier viewpoint. Here you can see Lake Guillermo, the Upsala Glacier’s eastern front and the South Patagonian Continental Ice Field. This was our first taste of the extremely vibrant colors we'd be enjoying ALL day!
After enjoying the views, we started our 14 km (8.5 mile) trek into Cañadón de los Fósiles (Fossil Canyon). Seeing real fossils, millions of years old, was surreal. They have been so well preserved through time, geological sights left uncovered after the passage of the oceans long ago, and I can't believe what we were able to see.
After a relatively strenuous hike, we arrived back to the grassy meadows of the estancia. Walking through the turquoise rivers, water wheels, and a ranch that seems to go back in time, we finally made it back. Time at the estancia seemed to take forever and pass by quickly at the same time, it is truly one of the most unique and isolated places that I've ever been.
Hopefully you can see why this is My FAVORITE Activity in Argentinian Patagonia!
