That's a great video, It has a lot of features compared to its size. Having type c solves the power issue. support for 2 USB w would be great since it supports multiple protocols. The addition of load balancing and WAN failover would make this perfect if it has 2 usb ports.

Love this router. I take it on all trips out of town. I also take a Firewalla Blue Plus which is even much smaller than the travel router and connect it to my GL Inet Router. I was able to disable the dhcp server on the router and the Firewalla handles all of the ip addresses therefore all traffic has to run through it for deep packet inspections. I can see all the traffic real time on my travel router. Extra security while away from home. GL Inet makes great products.

Thank you for emphasizing how to use this with public wifi. A lot of channels glaze over that part. You're the only person who mentioned this can be used both as a client and a VPN server. I didn't understand why you choose the Slate Plus over the Slate AX or BERYL Ax, but I assume it has to do with the release date of those newer products or the price.
@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir Год назад
For me it was mainly because of the price. The Plus was on sale for $70 and it was a great bang for the buck when it came to performance for the buck. The Beryl AX wasn’t out at the time but I do like having the extra Ethernet port compared to the Beryl AX.

Hey Samir, in terms of performance, does the max speed for both wireguard server and client matter to get optimal results? Or should I invest more in the server for higher max wireguard speeds and use something like this as the client (instead of getting 2 of these for both server and client)?

Great video Samir! I have one of the older even smaller discontinued GL.iNet models (GL-AR300M-Lite) and it has been fully solid for me, although now is very slow. Wow what a great video Samir, thank you! I have a question regarding the VPN: I would like to set up a HTTP Proxy and connect it to a VPN. I read that it’s possible with the gl.inet but I would like to have different IP addresses for different phones connected to the router. My questions are: 1) will it be possible to switch the IPs without a big hustle in-between connecting the phones? 2) do you think social media platforms like TikTok should be able to detect that it’s a VPN or will it be safe since the VPN isn’t on the actual mobile device but on a router? I hope you can share your thoughts on these-would appreciate it a lot 🙏🙏

Hello from Canada! Great review. I have the Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) travel router and I made use of using that router - during my road trip to Ottawa (which is Canada's national capital) and Montreal. I used that router as a repeater to connect through the hotel's WiFi. Another thing I wanted to ask is that I have a portable solar-powered battery bank (and yes, it has a USB-C connector) along with some surplus USB-C charging blocks. Will powering the router work if I were to go that particular means?

You don’t need a secondary radio. It can already do that. You can use wifi to connect to hotel wifi and also use wifi to connect your devices to this router. I believe it splits up the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands to do that.

@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir 10 месяцев назад
It is only safe and secure if you pair it with a VPN connection. You don’t need to necessarily pay for a VPN service. You can also host the VPN service at your home. That way all your Internet traffic will route through your home. There’s many videos online on how to set up your own VPN service at home.

@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir 11 месяцев назад
The Opal can do everything this router can do (just slower). And yes you can use the opal to connect to VPN to hide locations abroad assuming that you either subscribe to a VPN service (like NordVPN) or you have your own VPN server at home. However, if your work devices use GPS data (I.e. on a mobile phone) then this device won’t help you mask your location.
@macnet83
@macnet83 Год назад
it only makes sense to use this if you don't have a VPN client app on your devices. it is convenient to use this if you don't want to connect each device individually although several VPN apps auto-connect to wifi networks. they will be in different networks and won't be possible to share files between them though

@TechTalkwithSamir

It has WAN failover and load balancing. The only caveat is that your source has to be different. Like you can’t use two Ethernet ports. You can use one Ethernet internet source and one mobile hotspot source and have one be the backup if the primary source goes down.

@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir Год назад
Flashing light typically means it hasn’t yet established an internet connection (which can be normal when you’re first setting it up without an Ethernet cable plugged in to the WAN port). I recommend connecting a laptop to one of the lan ports and going to 192.168.8.1 from there when trying to configure it. The issue with trying to do it using wifi is that your device might default to another wifi connection while the router is rebooting. As a result, even after the reboot, your device might not be connecting back to the wifi of this router (especially if there’s other wifi connections in the range that you’ve previously connected to). As for tethering with android, I personally only have iOS devices so I haven’t tried android. Maybe someone else in the comments can provide more details about android tethering with this router.

If you read the entire thread, there is ONE guy, with unknown motives, claiming that the firmware 'phones home' to a web address owned (he says) by the People's Liberation Army. No one has been able to reproduce his results, and the thread has been heavily moderated due to being accusatory and borderline off-topic. After basically saying, "put up or shut up", the mods let the thread time out and expire. One seemingly paranoid netizen does not a conspiracy make... FWIW, I would call attention to the many buggy products that gl-iNet has released. It's almost a given that a user will need to perform a firmware upgrade right out of the box, especially on the lower-end products. My original Slate died an unceremonious death after following their instructions to backup settings when moving from 3.x to 4.x firmware, and then trying to restore them. I needed something quick to replace it, and bought the SFT-1200 Opal. It was buggy from the start, and there was no 3.x firmware upgrade. In the end, I had to download a beta 4.x and manually flash it. It now works, sort of... None of this is a big deal to me, as an engineer, but to an end-user without much technical interest, it might be a show-stopper. The Slate is a good router, especially at that price point, but I would stay away from the lower-end models. Just my 2¢.
