When I was an apprentice (many many many many moons ago) The old timer I was working with showed me how to make one of these and a set of trammel points too! I still have both!

thank you for sharing, I saw that tool at harbor freight, I find that bending small edges is harder, so this tool is great for that

So far as a "first" tool for sheet metal, I'd grab some 2" benders. The skill learned. You can hem with em if you HAVE to. Scribe a line and gently tip it up 5 or 10 degrees at a time, aligning your hand benders to the line you need to hem.

Thank you very much. My shop is throwing tons of sheet metal shelving and I decided to build up my sheet metal skills on the cheap. I didn’t get this one yet but you gave me an idea with your other videos. This morning(Night Shift 30+ years) after work I drove straight to Harbor Freight and purchased a 30” Brake with 20% off coupon, a Bauer Shearer with a 10% Bauer coupon, aluminum rivets and minor hand tools. I have tons of ideas and uses but I just “NEEDED THESE TOOLS!!!” Thanks again, I’m down some buck that I was saving for a Brick Tile Saw but that can wait because you said so...
@mlindholm

Reg I’m curious, did you get the 30” combo brake/slip/shear machine, or the basic, “clamp down this bar and flip these two handles” one? Whichever one it was, I’m curious what you think about it after using it a bit.
@regthebackyardjackofalltrades
@regthebackyardjackofalltrades 4 года назад
mlindholm I had purchased the 30” with one long tab for bending sheet metal. All personal work has stopped at this moment due to the new pandemic. I’m in the process of bringing all my tools home from work in preparation for the layoff that the airlines are about to do. One thing for sure I have tons of ideas I would like to do at home with the sheet metal brake. The day I wrote the first reply I attached two 13” 4”X4” studs that I had left over from building a 8’ workbench. The studs are used as feet and can be clamped to a workbench to keep it secure when bending thicker pieces of sheet metal. I don’t want to cut the large tab that was included but I have an idea of purchasing some flat stock sheet metal and cutting it into several different sizes for folding items. I was in the process of building a clamp box to store my harbor freight clamps I used to build my workbenches that we use at work but with the layoff I don’t believe that I’ll ever be able to hold San Diego airport again. Tough times but I have plenty of ideas that I hope that I’m able to accomplish at home when jobless. No doom and gloom in my reply just being proactive and keeping busy during this time. If you get a chance I have shown some of my builds on google and Pinterest. Can’t wait for everything to settle so that I can create things with this tool. Reg

mlindholm basic one. No space for the Cadillac. I was looking at that but have no idea where to place it but in my living room since my wife parks her car in my study(garage).

@@mlindholm I decided not to sulk on my undated future lay-off and continued on my build of my wood clamp box out of old parts shelving. I have the basic clamp down with one continuous tab. It worked well but I didn’t want to cut the tab so I used a 20” section of spare wood as the tab and was able to bend the two remaining tabs. Next I’ll be bending spare sheet metal to protect my tankless water heater from damage. Thanks again for asking. That was just a little push to keep me motivated during this era.

@@regthebackyardjackofalltrades gladly, happy to hear it's improved your mental state! I took advantage of Grizzly's "free shipping on (non-freight) orders over $35" current deal to finally order a 5" vise brake. Picked up some of the vise grip, metal bending pliers for lighter work, and the sheetmetal bender featured in the video. Have has some projects in the past these would've benefited from, and already done a few things with them. I'm still on the fence about getting the basic 18" HF brake, for longer, thin sheet jobs, or splurging for something a little nicer.

Ya looks like a gem much less expensive then the huge metal braking equipment though on the other hand you can only do some hvac vents and reasonable small metal bending application. Doubt it can bend car body panels well enough or put the pinch borders around your car body panels for the u-clips /screws to mount to. But regardless it can do some pretty cool stuff by the looks of it even make some electrical boxes ...etc Definitely metal trays ,...

What is the thickest gauge sheet metal (not aluminum) I can bend with this? I need to bend a piece that is about 2 to 2.5 inches in length, and the 3/8 depth will work perfect for my project. Not yet sure what gauge I will need for the project, but I would like to know its capability before I buy it. Thanks.

This is super helpful when working with slip and drive ac duct. saves a lot of time. But I really only use it when a duct joint needs to be cut. Having a break made in the field with heavy angle iron and clamps or vise grips is needed more often. But when this bender is needed I am happy to have it. it doesnt take up much room. Nice to have one on hand.

I was looking for a video on technique for folding 1' 22ga. witch is very tricky with my current material and I'm green AF in our company's capflash devision and I know I can be faster than my two Foreman so here I am, trying to find secrets before they show me

Scribe a line and tease it up with some hand benders. Helps to clamp it between something so you get same depth on your benders each time. If you don't you will get a curve.
