I agree. It's very rare that I paint on wet paper. I like the level of control that comes with wet on dry and then softening off edges :)

Thanks for this video! I struggled with watercolor for a long time because I thought you basically *had* to start out wet-in-wet and I could never seem to get the effects and rich, vibrant colors I was going for.... It was only after I gave myself permission to start wet-in-dry that it all clicked for me, but I still sometimes feel like I'm secretly doing it "wrong." It's nice to have this approach affirmed :)

I find if I don’t prewet, my edges dry too fast. Especially when humidity is low. So I often soak the paper for a few minutes (Arches cold press 140 lb), then roll the top dry with a towel. This means the underlying fibres of the paper stay wet longer. But you still get sharp edges if you want them because the top is relatively dry.

I like to use wet on wet on light or pale backgrounds to heighten the sense of depth. As you pointed out, because of the extra water, the paint tends to dry paler when you do wet on wet, which makes it ideal for parts of the painting you don't want to call too much attention to, but still are very important for the overall perspective, especially when painting cityscapes. At the end of the day, as you said, it all comes down to knowing your values and areas of contrast and working out a good strategy to render them effectively. Thanks for the tips.

I do the same for my botanical watercolors. It greatly helps me build up layers lightly when I start off with a wet on wet technique otherwise I start off too dark and the blend goes to shit. This way I can build those up layers for with more dimension as the layers below dry.
@antoniomarcos5321
@antoniomarcos5321 3 года назад
@@MummyBrown , exactly. I also like to build my work in stages; wet on wet allows me to gauge the wetness of the paper, so that the moment to render fine details comes only when the paper is the dryest.

Liron!! This makes sense to me, kinda feels silly to wet the paper with water and then wait til it hits just the right moment to add paint. Just put a nice paint down first, and charge in more paint if it's needed. Thank you for a clear message 😊

Yes Liron! The more experience I get working with paint the more I am in the hybrid approach! I figure out what level of wetness do I need to get the effect I want in an area. How vibrant do I want the color? Do I want a hazey effect? What type of edges am I going for? How much of a mix do I want on the paper? And so on. Bit these types of thought processes took a long time to come to the tip of my brain and maybe for many others too? I think that is because there is so much to learn and remember and try to put into practice in the beginning and however long it takes for these things to become automatic and muscle memory is different for everyone. But oh what a joy when the coin drops all the way through the machine and the desired product is delivered into the hand! 😉💜
@LironYan
@LironYan 3 года назад
YES - exactly! And the crazy thing is that you can't "read" about these skills, you have to paint, paint and PAINT! You have to experience how the water and paint react, and learn all of what you mentioned on an intuitive level. As they say, you can't read about doing push-ups 🤓 So happy you've come to a point where you figured a lot of this out, keep it up 😊🎨🎨

Thank you, Liron, for this very interesting point of view... From my side of beginner, I look at a lot of videos and it is also true that the wet in wet technique is sometimes considered as a "must", which is problematic... I think I feel more comfortable with painting different thin layers...

Here's another option as well: work the first layer wet into wet with dilute acrylics. If you let them dry, you can glaze and blend over them with watercolors. I've done this to get in the lightest and midtone value, then glaze to get the darks. Also, acrylics DON'T work well on dry paper. They tend to sink in right away and stay right there.

I totally know what you mean :) I love me some wet on dry. I have gotten very good at wet in wet though. If I may, you needed to allow your moisture level to absorb slightly. Like a sheen, instead of a puddle. But you probably know that so don’t mine me.
@LironYan

Haha - indeed, that's one of the most important aspects of wet-in-wet! Usually You'll have to let it dry 10% or so, unless you really want the paint to spread out everywhere.

Questions: Liron, do you think the type of watercolor paper influences your preference for wet-on-dry technique? Would you have the same preference if you were using hot press or rough watercolor paper? Also does the size of the paper play a role in this preference? I could see how working on 15x15 cm would be different than working on 30x40 cm for wet-on-wet technique.

Honestly I don't believe this tangling of fibres. The reason is that paper is produced wet. In fact there is a lot of water involved in making paper. It comes out of the paper press wet. So at that point it would already tangle. If you put down a layer and leave it completely to dry then there should be no difference in the surface to it coming out of the paper press. I have been watching Charles Evans a lot, and he uses wet in wet only for the sky and distant trees etc. After this initial stage everything else goes on wet in dry. And you are right, there is a lot more control.
@LironYan
@LironYan 3 года назад
Hmmm, I think it depends on a few other factors. If the paper comes out of the press wet, however it's been heavily pressed and completely flattened, I can see a scenario where the fibers are held closely together, despite being tangled / messy. Then, once you wet them again while painting, they absorb and gain more mess, and dry messier (because you didn't flatten them like in the production process). I'm unfamiliar with how exactly it works, so I'm only guessing at this point (: Perhaps talking to a production expert may provide more useful info.

As a beginner, I struggled with wet on wet as I find the blending of colour is not vibrant and I can't control the water. At the end, I use both approaches depending on the object I am painting. I thought my approach is wrong. Thank you for reaffirming my approach Liron.

Does this method have a name? Is it the same as a "direct approach" where to paint all the value ranges in one pass? I get your point about the luminosity of the paint. @tradingpostfarms
@tradingpostfarms 3 года назад
I thought I would reply to your comment because I tried this on Arches 140 cold press, and on Boahong 140 cold press and on both brands of paper I found that I lost some of the the sizing after wetting the back, and I did not find that it added any benefit. So that was my experiment and I did it in order to see if it could help in a plein air situation. I was dissapointed.

@@tradingpostfarms Thanks for your info. Very interesting. I asked because not only do I see some people wetting the back of their paper, I also even see some people actually choosing to paint on the back side of Saunders rough paper after pre-wetting the front or "right" side of that paper. I am not at all sure what the purpose of that might be.
@tradingpostfarms
@tradingpostfarms 3 года назад
@@lauriemarch5173 so there is a video about extending the drying time of the paper that suggests wetting the opposite side of the paper. That's where I got the idea. In an attempt to find the best cotton paper, both in quality and value. I've tried several brands. Right now I'm using stonehenge aqua 140 and it stays wet longer than anything I've tried so far, but it does lift easier than arches, so you do have to just be aware when glazing as to not lift off your first layer. So far I'm actually loving it. But I have yet to attempt a cityscape, Liron style.

Hey Liron. First I must say I LOVE your channel and some of my best results are from following your vids. However wet on wet can be useful for especially dramatic skies and for photos where the background is blurred. Say, something botanical where the main subject is realistic, in focus and the background is soft, blurred. Also in landscapes the distance may benefit from wet in wet in my limited experience. Again, you've helped so much! One more thing: when you coming to NYC for workshops? I missed you in the fall of 2019.

Hi, I started watercolor in 2019 and arrived to a good results when pre-wetting small area to put in a "dry" colors or working dry to wet using a complement of water to smooth edges where I need. Now my new chalange are clouds. I saw and try many techniques and noone worked for me, except spritz water then guding color into and obtain hard and smooth edges. So my questions: should I use additifs like gome arabic or ox gal to be able to "take out" color when all is still wet? Also to arrive to take off color when all is dry. Because artists are showing their work and results without explane if they use additifs... And all I tryed was catastrophic (without other products). So ox gal helped me bether mix on the paper and gave me more time to take out colors... Now I am asking myself if I shouldn't use also the gum arabic... in my water for washes and colors. Finaly I think I'll do my way, to see what's hapen... Wet on dry + Dry on wet when I have to treat big zones... I wanted learn from people making butiful paintings, but most of those on youtube, do not expalin, maybe to send us all on patreon... It's a litle desperate... Thank's in advance Ekaterina

Great video Liron!! As a beginner myself, you made a great point mentioning that 'more water = more paint' - which... is pretty common sense to most... Personally, I struggle to even remember that. Its a very simple mistake but I didn't realize that adding too much water when blending or adding in other colours would impact the saturation so fast & at such a high intensity. How do you feel about the quality of watercolour paints that are commonly available today? Do you think that industrialization has affected the quality of the paints at all?
