You Need To Practice Developing Phrases in Your Solos

If you listen to great jazz musicians, and it doesn't matter if it is Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Pat Metheny or Kurt Rosenwinkel. They play jazz phrases and connect them, making their solo one long piece of music not a bunch of licks.
So you should probably ask yourself if your solos are just you playing something on this chord and then something else on the next chord.
That is what makes it a solo and what makes it really great, and you really don't want to sound like your solo is you throwing licks on a chord progression.
Let's fix that!

aha, this is what I've been blathering on in the RU-vid comments for the past year about! It's more than playing "the correct grammar" and outlining the changes. It's more than vocabulary. Its being aware of musical sentences, paragraphs, essays--building on phrases, melodic development and knowing how melody functions in your own musical ear. This, this is the stuff!

It’s always nice to hear jazz lines that don’t sound like obvious scales.

I Love that rhythm displacement Jens! It always throws me off timing at first. It has to be one of the most important ingredients to learn and it is quite tricky. Thanks again Jens

I think for me it got to the point where I was playing too many chords and my fingers got tired. Seriously but I tend to learn things in a different way than most. And it only happened recently so I don't recall actually trying to do single note lines or arpeggios and now I'm playing solos without even thinking too much about where to go next because there are so many paths. And I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

I do it by doing what got me in trouble, ear training and obsessing over it. That and I've gotten into the habit of writing pre-composed solos, not to play note for note on the bandstand--but to slow down my process and really focus on developing themes and melodic development. One thing I learned was to practice holding onto the last phrase in my inner ear as I play my next phrase. That way, I'd practice making strategic connections with my lines. Last line ended in with that high A? Maybe weave back into the high A on the next line. What you said about displacement and direction is HUGE. For me, writing solos is helping me fine tune my voice on the instrument. That, and getting back to basics--all the time :)

Hi Jens, I'm not really into jazz so my question is: why on the second raw first bar on Am and D7 did you play straight Em7 and CM7 arpeggios? thank you so much again, it's alway a plesure to watch your videos!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
The arpeggios from the 5th of Am7 and 7th of D7 🙂
@Pipun7534
@Pipun7534 4 года назад
Dear master! Thank you for your work, I was wondering, in the first example, you use an Em7 arpeggio over the Am, which I understand is very common but then you use a Cmaj7 arpeggio over a D7, so ¿It should work as a good option playing a maj7 arpeggio constructed over the b7 of a Dominant? I mean in any tune or progression
