Hey guys,
I'm still experiencing symptoms from my concussion. So, I'm unable to skate, and the videos I can make are limited. But, I wanted to start talking about the most common mistakes, I see beginners making, that are impeding their process. This video covers not crouching enough. There will be more. Im considering calling the series "Rookie Mistakes".
Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching. This playlist contains all of my previous trick tips: • How to Pressure Flip

This is what skateboarding needs. Someone who truly understands the physics, anatomy, form involved. Not another bum who can do all the tricks without understanding why, or people chalking it up to "he just has good style". Followed!

Even as someone skating for decades, I've been consciously thinking about squatting more, particularly when I'm rolling up to an uncomfortable ledge or flatbar trick. Knowing I have a better center of gravity takes a bit of the fear away and also makes the tricks easier. 🤷🏼‍♂️🙌🏻

It's so true about the squatting. I could not deep squat unassisted on the floor without a skateboard. I started practicing squatting and stretching ( since my hamstrings were so tight) and it totally helped my skateboarding.

So true. When I was just starting out I couldn’t understand why I was so unstable and couldn’t get any height. It wasn’t until I watched footage of myself that I realized how little I was actually crouching down. It felt to me like I had a good amount of bend but nooo that definitely wasn’t true 😂.

Bro. You are a fantastic explainer and teacher. Your words make sense and you deliver them so calming and understanding. I’ve been skating for 10 + years but never put consistent effort to truly progressing to a level I wanna be at. I can do all the flat ground basics skate banks, or hips. But grinds, and Ollie-ing high enough to get ontop of ledges . I’ve built bad habits overtime and I’ve tried to understand my faults in skating and I can 100% see how I’m not bending down and using my body to its optimal conditions. I’ve listened to TONS of tutorials and skating is one thing that is experience based not tutorial based and I just really appreciate the way you laid this out. Thank you. This one clicked.

Thank you for: watching, since you could’ve watched anyone else’s video and chose mind. 2nd for the kind words and explanation. I started making the videos at the request of someone whose opinion I trust, and who said I’d be good at this. Everyone who expresses the value these videos provides them gives me fuel to keep making tutorials. Happy skating!

Great talk!! Honestly a newbie… getting to stair gaps and the deeper squat has helped me commit to the Ollie as I get close to a tucked in ball with my body right before I pop…and therefor can easier accept floating through the air balled up; as opposed when I stand to straight and high up and often send the board in front of me. This has also helped all my frontside grind tricks.

Great video! At times I was a little distracted because your choice of background music is so good :D Maybe try pitching that down a little so that your voice doens't get into conflict with the music ;) I will try the crouching while doing noseslide slappys. For now I'm just kind of turning out of them the moment I hit the ledge.

Very helpful. "Leverage" is a great key word here. Tom Rohrer has an above average series of trick tips on RU-vid (Tom's Tutorials) and emphasizes the importance of squatting down in every vid I've seen. Whythetrick, from Japan, even does 3d modeling of the physics, the leverage from crouching down and how to time popping and scooping. But even though I've seen all that this is still adding more to my understanding. Cool series!
@FloatDown
@FloatDown Год назад
Especially great tip that I hadn't heard elsewhere (even after watching vids about the best/safest ways to fall): crouching makes falling less dangerous! I'm just coming back into skating after a long hiatus and it's funny how you remember how to do tricks better than you remember how to fall. Relearning how to skate is a lot different from original natural progression.

Ive used these tips after hearing them originally in your ollie higher video. Using levarage and popping while knees are still bent. Ive really focused on that for months and now i can consistently pop better, stay more centered, and land better. Its applied to Every trick ive learned and ive progressed so much since honing in the timing of when to begin pop. Since the pop is consistently better, the board sticks to my front foot better so I have way more board control than I did 6 months ago

At the end of the video when you're saying that you're having a hard time collecting your thoughts due to the concussion, I just want to say that even with that you are one of the most articulate, well-spoken people in any skateboard related video I've ever seen. I think you said your thoughts in this video beautifully and thoroughly. In regards to squatting, I think a lot of times I feel like I'm squatting far while riding but in reality I probably am not. Maybe I should film myself skating and watch back on the footage to see. I'm still fairly beginner level but I've been trying to get slappy noseslides. I think maybe I don't squat nearly as far as I think I am right before lifting the nose because it feels hard to get the nose off the ground when I go for it. Either that, or maybe it's because I'm not used to having my front foot so far on the nose whenever I lift it, because I can kickturn very well normally, it's just when I go for the noseslide I have trouble with it.

I'm trying to skate again after 20 years of not doing it. I'm much older, and the first thing I noticed was just how bad my flexibility was hindering me. The squat part was killing me badly, and the aftermath of a session of Ollie's had me sore for nearly a hole damn month. Part of me has this sense of regret. Like damn...what did I get myself into. Can I even do this? I wasn't ever good back then, but I honestly had my best years of life....and just everything back in the day...mid to late 90s, early 2000s...whew man...life was awesome and here I am chasing a high idk is even achievable when I'm almost 40 now... On the bright side...living by LA...skateparks in abundance...I definitely had no access to that as a kid. I live next to 2 skateparks. Huge benefit of today's world. Pretty fortunate times. Your vids are awesome. You explain things in great detail.

cross training is so important. i'm not even that old (25) but almost my whole life i've never really been physically fit or active after the age of about 10. so my lack of flexibility has really held me back in skating until i started cross training and doing a rigorous stretching routine and core workouts.

I can't do that mang tricks, but can Ollie, shuvs, half cab and at least 5050 a ledge at a nearby park. It's my job that ruins my legs tho bro. Standing, bending, stooping, steel toes 10 hours a day. I've since done stretches, foam roller, helped a ton. Leg work outs..it's like I gotta choose do I wanna be too sore to skate at all or skate and be too sore to work them out man! Haha. Thanks for the reply. I've always been fit but neglected my lower body. Skipped legs days and here it is haunting the heck outa me

Thanks Norman! Awesome advice and perspectives here. I've skated for 15 years on and off but only recently have taken steps to fix bad habits and muscle imbalances That cause me to hunch my back forward and my knees to cave in when I squat. Doing yoga has helped my range of mobility and next on my plan is to learn weight training/squatting heavy to help give me more power/ Strength and consolidate my squat form with strait back. Can't wait to try this tomorrow on my skate session. Really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos!

@AlexProspect
@AlexProspect Год назад
@@GasGotti exactly bro! how have you been getting on with the training/skating? i have found that with tricks like nollie flips or variel Heels that fixing a range of motion issue got me the trick, and it was not so much an issue with how i was approaching the trick but more with mechanical limitations, it is definitely a new way of approaching skating and probably one that we could only figure out in our 30s. i have also found that heavy squat + leg day gym sessions have helped with my general board stability and pushing more than i was expecting so that was a good bonus.
@Lollopirate
@Lollopirate Год назад
These tips are golden, thank you very much man, you earned a sub. The hard part for me, since I've been skating a lot as a kid (with terrible form) and getting back into it now that i'm a bit older, is that i find it very weird to try and adjust my form since the muscle memory from years of skating (with bad form as I said) is still there and it feels like when trying to use good form I can't land a single trick. That being said i really see the value in this and i just have to keep at it probably.

Same, same! 46 and just getting really into skating again for the first time since I was about 30. Almost immediately could do tricks I could never do before, still have my ollies and pop shove-its, really gratifying. Dangerous for me has been that remembering how to do tricks is a lot clearer than remembering how to fall. I got over excited, over committed, and I sprained my thumb. Not a bad injury, thankful for a warning shot, but still super annoying. Relearning to stay low, when not to commit to a trick, and generally how to stay safe(-ish) is coming slower than the tricks
@temi6034
@temi6034 Год назад
You're right, if my board flys off from a whack landing, or slips out. it's a result from the actions of my body not being controlled properly. and i guess what really scares me when it comes to commiting to tricks, isnt the board. it's me. i'm scared that i won't be able to control my body correctly, to come out unscathed. it's about me not having the confidence to land this trick properly. skating really is a mental game. you can learn how to do tricks phyiscally. but to consistent perform these tricks at a consistent level. your mindset when doing these tricks consistently confident.
