Did you know that Ray Charles could improvise in the style of Charlie parker on alto saxophone? Although his embouchure sound just a bit underdeveloped, these are some serious bebop skills considered it was a side project.

Did you know Ray Charles could play alto sax like this? It was recorded on a Brazilian tv show in 1963. You can clearly hear that he listened to Bird imo. Some implicit influences, and some fairly straight forward quotes. How many do you count? Hope you enjoyed this. And ,are there other famous artists that play sax (well) as a side thingy you know of? Let me know! (I know about Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, David Bowie and Van Morrison, although I never really enjoyed this latter one his playing tbh) /Jorre

Some not musically educated person gave me a dislike when I said "try Hermeto Pascoal", above. Let me clarify just one point: Hermeto Pascoal is one of most genial musicians who was ever born in Brazil. In the World, as well, without any doubts. Beetween his friends were Miles Davis and Paco de Lucia, and many others. His real pitch gave him the ability to learn any musical instrument. His main are acordion, piano and acoustic guitar. But he play any. Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax. For example. Try the album "Sax e aplausos", recorded at Montreux Jazz Festival. Yea, I say again, try Hermeto Pascoal. And if you dislike it, whatever. Bye!

@@ceelothatmane9421 it's like telling a guitar player: you have two guitars, one plays normal but the other... no matter how hard you hit it it always plays at the same volume unless you use a volume pedal, oh and by the way you have to play music with your feet too.

@ceelothatmane9421 Год назад
@@jampoles if you're proficient in piano then you're only adding a few more steps. Just get the muscle memory down. I mean I am a guitarist, and an expression pedal is a must for me. I had to learn how to control my wah instead of using autowah. It's not as difficult as playing organ bass pedals, but it's only a few more steps. Drummers have to use all their limbs and practice limb isolation. If a drummer learned piano he could easily pick up organ. You gotta thinkin terms of neurochemistry and brain connections. What is easiest to learn? Drums, and guitar. Learn drums, take that rhythm and learn guitar. Take that theory and rhythm and now it's easier to learn piano. Then you learn organ from learning drums, piano, and guitar. This is how you hack your brain to learn instruments

Reminds me of the excellent "Soul Meeting" by Ray Charles and Milt Jackson. There are a few tracks with no vibes, featuring Piano and Saxophone. The first time I listened to it, I thought "I had no idea that Milt played sax" and then looked at the liner notes, only to see that Ray was on the reed and Milt had taken over at the keys. Great to see him actually playing it live! Awesome.

So very, very good!! What a terrific blend of what they called hard bop and bebop, filling in the gap between Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker light no one else could. Obviously, Ray Charles was a genius -- one of a kind. Everything he touched was golden. He had a novel way of articulating notes on that horn, sometimes “tonguing them in an intentionally "sloppy way" as he launched into one curvaceous line after another hitting all the right notes in the chord extensions. And the big band arrangement was true to form -- just riffing away with those short repetitive statements in call and response exchanges. The inventors of this art form, arrangers Don Redman and Fletcher Henderson, would be proud! Wow!

In his autobiography Quincy Jones talks about hanging out with Ray Charles when they were both teenagers (although Ray was a few years older than Q). He claims that it was Ray who showed him what was bebop was all about. As teens, Quincy saw Ray as this ultra-cool cat who was hip to the most recent developments in the music (bebop), who already had his own apartment and was already getting girls.
