I don't know if you know this David, but Mr. Niven played Bond in Casino Royal before Connery. The film was in monochrome. I guess today it would be considered boring, but it had class.
@@FilthyCarProductions You are referring to the comedy version of Casino Royale, where he was one of several people who played Bond, a version that no one takes seriously. Fleming strongly preferred him to Connery, seeing Connery as a brute. I think Niven was too old by the time the 007 films took off.
ironically for someone who so profoundly misunderstands everything about japan, I think Fleming does "serious comedy" pretty well. I guess thats kinda something that British media tends to share with Japanese.
I am from Japan. I read the book when I was younger, and It left me wondering whether Ian Fleming had ever gone to Japan. The film was not a whole lot better, but I do love watching Wakabayashi Akiko and Hama Mie when they were at the height of their beauty.
Hello. Yes, to answer your question, Ian Fleming did indeed go to Japan in 1959 and then in 1962( to recuperate from a heart attack) which inspired the setting for You Only Live Twice.
There's a few anomalies in this sequel to OHMSS. Having shot dead Bond's new wife at the conclusion of the last book, Blofeld exacts revenge for Bond's interference in his latest master plan. It's odd that The Union Corse chief [father of Tracy Bond] does not re-appear as he was happy to offer 007 £ 1M for his daughter's marriage. Yet there is no mention of Draco at all in this book. Logically, he would join forces with Bond to track down Blofeld. Aside from this, it's a fine tale, set in Japan for the most part and I would recommend it.. I did read somewhere that Fleming based a lot of his characters on actual people he met in his working life. The hilarious Dikko Henderson persona was inspired by some Australian prick that Fleming had met in his diplomatic service days. Unlike most Australians, the Henderson character can actually hold his booze and provides excellent dialogue, some of it genuinely funny. Check this one out. You won't be disappointed!
This is the third bond novel I’ve listened to this month. He doesn’t do much spying/dispatching bad guys does he? Most of the time he sits and talks to other blokes in dim rooms then moodily walks along a beach, before another long long chat.
