The Tascam Portacapture X8 was a game changer for me with its 32-bit float capabilities. I recently upgraded from the H6 and it has already saved my bacon after just a few times using it.
Great comment newfound, after reading many of the comments for the video, I have to admit it sounds like the Tascam is the way to go if its between the H6 and X8. As I mentioned to chuck if im in the market for an upgrade I will definitely be keeping and eye on the X8. Cheers sir
I had a rode shotgun mic die on me during a talking head interview so I used the xy mic that comes with the H6 and was blown away at how good it sounded, even a good couple of feet away from my subject!
Great job! I think A LOT of people go external for versatility. I think shotgun is best for talking head. Lavs are always distracting visually and subject to touching/clothes rubbing etc, and the internal mics (at least in this demo) grabbed plosives way too easily!
Great video thanks. I have the H8 which I find excellent. Great Pre-amps (As per Curtis Judd) I make short film and documentary / Foley purely as a hobby. My other gear is the Sony PXW-X70 4K, Sennheiser MKE600 in a Rode blimp etc plus some Small condenser for indoor dialogue. Edit on FCPX in MacBook Pro
I'm a musician. Zoom X/Y mic sounds best to my ear. It's the most balanced. Shotgun sounds bass-heavy, lavalier sounds.... like a lavalier - Thin and raspy, lacking bass. Ultimately sound is a subjective thing. The Zoom is presenting your voice best here, but it's also a big piece of kit sitting square in the middle of the frame. Shotgun is invisible, and the Lavalier unobtrusive, so it's a trade-off. Most people will not notice the difference - but I do.
I have the old version and the new version of H6 with all the microphone even the shotgun, it's a fantastic investment for the price and the Audio quality 👍
Hello Trey, I'm with Chris on the X8 but because it records 32bit! The Zoom H6 is 24 max so for $50 more bucks for the Tascam X8, it's worth it to me! I have had the H4N FOREVER but now with 32 bit making things kind of bullet proof for audio, i's a headache I can do without! I do alot with aircraft and always getting crappy audio with the H4N! Even turned off it clips like a MoFo when trying to record Helos! Loving your channel bro! Keep up the great work! Very inspiring!
Chuck I love the honest feedback, both you and chris make a great case for the x8. While I haven't gotten my hands on an x8 I will have to admit having 32bit would be awesome. I purchased the h6 a while back and after hearing from both of you in the future if im in the market for an upgrade i will definitely take and look as the x8 and the tascam lineup. Cheers as always sir.
I'm really torn on this!! I thought I was set on the H6 but with knowing that I can't clip out with the F6 is a real draw! I am looking at something to live stream "sing bowls" which have quite the high highs and I would hate to give clients poor quality with clipping. I do wish that the F6 would have a x/y mic and I wish it had the combo inputs like the H6. The F6 doesn't have overdubbing which is disappointing but I have heard overdubbing on the H6 is tricky anyhow, besides isn't that what I can do in post anyhow? I could live without but I was excited about that with the H6. The biggest disappointment I had that stopped me in my tracks with the H6 was reviews on the poor noise floor, but I wonder if I would of ever noticed that if I never read it. I do really like the idea of two clean pre amps on the F6 and the low noise floor. If only the F6 had an x/y mic, overdubbing, combo inputs. A lower price point. I could over look those short falls. If only the H6 had 32 bit (no clipping), a better noise floor. I could over look these short fails but at more of a price to pay with clipping. But it's not like people didn't work around clipping before 32 bit came around. So could over look these points as well. This is quite the toss up for me!
Can you use a microphone for vocals? Then import those in a DAW of your choice and make music? Just thinkin of idk, lemme know, I’m always up for some trials and new things to explore 😜
Thanks for a great review -- really helping me with my decision. I do wish this video did not have a music bed, however! Would have been nice to hear the Zoom H6 on its own... How's the s/n ratio on this thing? Any irritating noise floor? I see that you record at pretty low levels, so I'd assume it's pretty good!
I’m going to pick an x8 soon. The functionality is sick but I’m not 💯 excited because of its form factor. I would want a zoom f6 but it’s close to $750 so the tascam x8 it is
Let me know what you think of the x8 if you get your hands on one. Also the zoom f6 is a beast, currently its just to pricey for my budgets unfortunately
@@LowellProductions dude I got an f3 and it’s awesome but it doesn’t have a wired timecode option, only works with the ultra sync blue. I wish the f6 could be found used or a little cheaper. I didn’t get the x8 because of it’s huge form factor. I wanted something that could mount to my rig
Hello Trey, I just bought the Zoom H6 (2020 model) and I need to take advantage of a friend's trip to the USA to buy a system of two wireless lavalier microphones that are compatible with the recorder. I will use it for independent short films. The "Sennheiser Pro Audio EW 112P G4" are too expensive for me. I appreciate your advice. thanks gus
sorry for the delay, you are correct. I used some mic screens from the movo vxr-10 pro that go on the end of the shotgun mic. they are a little bigger than you typical lav mic cover or at least the opening so they were nice to but on the end of the H6. Great question hopefully what I wrote makes sense. Cheers Guys
Hello, thank you for your excellent video. My question is that I am going to record the sound of a river, for example, but sometimes the sound of the wind enters the recording and ruins it. I wanted to ask, can you guide me? If not, please introduce the microphone for both mobile and camera. I will be grateful
really all you need is an xlr cable and you should be able to take a feed from the mixer straight into the H6, my best recommendation would to be record your audio rather low so you dont peak the audio at any point. Make sure to either have plenty of battery or a steady power supply and you should be good to go. I tend to check the audio during an event or performance several times while filming just to make sure the levels are okay. Cheers
does the zoom h6 only take TRS for input or can it take TTRS? Cos for the rode shotgun mic, it comes with a TTRS to TTRS cable, if I wanna use it with the zoom h6, I know I need an XLR adaptor but do I need to change it to a TTRS to TRS cable as well?
This Zoom H6 has been around for ten years (all black since 2020, but no differences that matter). I'm a big zoom fan, since I own a H4 first generation (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_H4_Handy_Recorder) and I still record with it on my camcorder as external mic + recorder. The output goes to my camera as a backup recording. I'm now looking for a field recorder for my video shooting with a minimum of three XLR-inputs, since mostly we shoot with two camera's plus a perch. The H6 looks exactly as what I need, since the H8 will be overkill for my purposes. Still I was wondering if there were newer devices on the market that would be a better purchase in 2023... Thank you for your program.
