'Getting going' is the bane of my existence. The other day I set all my art supplies up to paint a piece I was extremely excited about and no lie I sat there for about four hours, just faffing around before finally getting started. I don't even HAVE social media. Once i started I was fine, it's just that initial start is so hard!?? I am the same as you though, that little voice goes silent only when I am deep into the creative process, it's so peaceful.

Sometimes people get analysis paralysis staring at a blank canvas or sketchbook page. As soon as you get set up, take a any paint or pen and just make a mark at random. There. Now the canvas/page is no longer pristine and you've nothing to fear about making a 'wrong' mark. CREATE!

Here's a potential solution I just thought of. We don't do stuff because we anticipate unhappiness. To solve that, plan to be unhappy. Change your perspective on unhappiness to be like that of hunger, is a human drive and everyone goes through it daily regardless of the content of their lives. This way, you won't avoid tasks because they'll make you unhappy. You'll do things just because you want to try to do them, not because they'll make you happy, which they might. They'll make you happy and unhappy at the same time. Which is fine.

I'm 47 and feel like I've wasted my whole life and creative potential. Perfection and self criticism have been my worst enemy. I've kind of lost myself and must get back to what I enjoy, with the goal of putting work out there instead of hiding it. Without a creative outlet I'm feeling that I'm suffocating. So I'm going to start drawing again, and dancing, and cooking. Thanks for the kick 👍🏼

Hey man, I'm not far behind you and have been feeling much the same (I turn 46 in a couple weeks, though I feel about half that if not younger mentally [half the time anyhow] lol). I know myself it's never too late. I've done my research; there are so many people out there who never accomplished much of anything in the world 'out there' until they were in their 50s, 60s, or even later (here's looking at you Kernel Sanders!) before finally getting their footing - and I think that's OK (though I understand why it can seem to be maybe not-so-much from a 'nostalgic' perspective); The real important part is that you can find your fulfillment *inside* yourself, regardless of what is happening outside - because that's the only place it ever truly comes from anyhow. Strange and good (strangely good, goodly strange?) things start to happen when you give yourself the gift of gratitude now, without waiting for the outside world to catch-up - but again, trust me when I say 'I know the feeling'!!!! (also, thanks to @patrickteebo for the video. It helped!). :)

Thanks for this video! I will be 53 in a few days and am just now getting the courage to start creating/writing/shooting films. Something that has been a “want” of mine for ever. And the thing is, I DID participate in creative outlets in my youth and was quite good at it but I felt compelled to do the thing your parents teach you about obtaining a steady job, house, pay bills, retire, etc. I spent way too much time in my 20s, 30s and 40s being stuck; playing video games and grinding a 9 to 5 that made someone else rich and not me. I have been creating since I was 8 years old. It began with a small camera. Today I'm an artist, photographer, author, music producer for movies, television. I use time management to create. Last year I created 500 art works. All on my phone. Sometimes when I'm downloading photos from my phone it's usually by 200's, or more. Things add up when you're creating. I consider my photos art work, because they come out beautiful. I can't sit around doing nothing. It feels like my brain is rotting inside my skull. I have to do things. I am a creative. I don't like laziness.

I've been a 3D-Artist for 10 years now and lately my job didn't feel as fun as it used to. I grabbed every opportunity for a freelance gig that was remotely related to my field and did it just to earn money. But this year I realized that I didn't create anything for the sake of creating in years. So I started to take on less commissions and started to create my own art again and I feel the fun slowly coming back to me. Thank you for this video, I really needed to hear this. :)

Nice story, Pat. I didn't know the back story to your farming series. I have a creative son and he's always trying out these wacky art projects and I don't dare stop him because who knows where it will lead. He's a natural artist and he cannot stop himself. Imagine if Jack Conte's parents convinced him that he was wasting time spending years playing in empty pubs for almost no money? Even if he never did become a (m/b)illionaire, it wouldn't even matter because he was having fun. I have this theory that no time is wasted as long as you're free. We all have the same 24h. If you choose to watch tv for 3h per night then maybe you need to, maybe you enjoy it. Who cares if nothing is produced? Relaxation is produced. And some people go to the gym every night after work. Are they better? No, they do it because they enjoy it. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to keep it up. So basically, just do what you want. If it makes you happy, you'll find the time, and if your responsibilities don't allow you to have fun, that's ok too because that's life.

One thing I'd add; As you get older, your own body and health can affect you in ways you don't realize. I'm 43 now, but two years ago I was really struggling to sort of 'reset' when I'd sit down to try and start a new task. It turned out it was as much gastrointestinal as it was mental. One surgery later, I'm down a lot of discomfort and pain that I had just become so used to, I didn't even know it was there. It's made a huge difference.

This reminds me of someone asking a well-known author what they had to do to be a writer. This person had read many how-to-books, asked questions galore, etc. The writer simply said: 'If you want to be a writer, you have to write.' Seriously, just do the work and stop thinking about doing it. Having created something, no matter whether it's good or not, is better than nothing.

Great video 🎉 I made this epiphany on New Year's Eve when I was going through my goals. I was like, "What do I actually want to achieve this year?" Then January 1st I started to draw seriously everyday, everything, so I could make an online comic. It's a lot of work and I'm not the best but it's so much fun. No one in my family plays and instrument. I didn't grow up in a house filled with music. I failed music in school. For some reason I had the intense desire to make music. Like you, sometimes I wish I didn't have it. Maybe life would be easier. On the other hand I don't question what my purpose in life is. The hardest thing is to finish and release your first song (article, video, poem, joke whatever). Follow the process from start to finish. Then keep doing it over and over.

I also recommend keeping a practice collection, if your craft allows. Sketchbooks, a journal, a small photo album, etc. something you can put absolutely anything into. Having something that is just for you whenever you feel you need to practice or want to play around is a godsend. Love the video! Your energy is infectious. Would love to see more :D

Your story is so similar to mine. I did study art and such as a teen but everyone kept talking about how there was no work to be done in the field so I wasted my whole 20s not doing creative work at all. And then I, much like yourself, figured it out at 30. I need to be creating! So I quit my administration job, went back to school, studied game art and even though the economy is out of wack right now and it's hard to get a job. I still try to create as much as I can every day. I'm currently also creating RU-vid videos of me animating my first short film and I'm having a blast with it! I totally agree with all of this! LET'S CREATE!

I'm a creative type and one thing that always helped me was being involved in creative projects all the time, a year doing crafts, 6 months designing a game, years playing and recording music etc... Doesn't matter if the world will see what I did, creation for creation sake is great and without this pressure of pleasing the world

Hey Patrick, your video is very touching! I think one thing you've said and we have in common is that I also only started to be truly active on the creative field (as an illustrator) in my late 20's. I always loved to draw, since school days I would spent my whole time drawing stuff on the back of my math book, I was one of the best students in art classes and even my friends at the time were impressed by how good I already was. But any adult came to me and said "hey, you can become a professional artistis and live, pay your bills and so you know?" specially my family that for some reason always saw my creative side day by day. Well, after school I went to college, became a lawyer, kept drawing as a hobby, and I was miserable, I felt that this was not my destiny, that I was letting something great in my past. So then, it clicked, I left my job as a lawyer and started to study more about illustration and how to work on this market, and started my career.

This hit me like those spring breezes we feel with heart. 💐 So, it's also the very first time I took to coment on someone's video, glad it's your. I'm acrossing a severe burnouted moment on life, working 9 hours, 6 days a week on a hospital (it's definitelly NOT my path of "woah, we're having some solar happiness here"). My free time are being used only for sleep, and another small ones jsut for scrolling social media, seeing other's creations and idealizing "oooooah, how's happy sould be doing my own stuffs". But I don't even move from the couch. Untill your video pop-up on my timeline. And broooooo, you lightedup a handpainted candle on my mind. A lot of ideas blooming, very clearly steps-by-steps. I fall into the same thing where I get ideas, and don't follow through on them. For me it's the ADHD, and recently, have taken the time to learn how it effects me, and how to plan, and execute. There's always going to be the self doubt, and part of that was, I was comparing what I MIGHT be for content quality to current big RU-vidrs. When I was a child I was incredibly creative. I loved creating games, thinking about the universe and imagining awesome possibilities, writing fiction stories, choreographing pretend sword-fights with my friends, etc... Then, I went to a highly competitive prep school where I became overworked and incredibly stressed. All of that creative energy has been repressed for so long and it wasn't until recently that I even began to remember that it exists. Now I'm 25 and I'm trying to get that energy flowing again with this music RU-vid channel and a new gaming channel as well. Hoping it will lead to a life where I don't feel so stuck. Thank you for making this video. I’ve always been a creative soul, but have been massively stunted by this bully in my brain telling me that all my writings and doodles and other creative projects suck. I’m way too hard on myself, which makes my creativity and ideas dry up so fast. Recently, it almost feels like I have lost the creative part of myself, and I feel indifferent about life, which is hardly conducive to poetry writing (my main creative outlet). I struggle so hard with getting started and staying consistent with creative projects as well. It feels impossible. I suspect the critical voice in my head is one of the main reasons for this, as well as the resulting burnout. How do I be nicer to myself, and give myself grace?

Do it for the sake of doing it. Don't reread your poetry. Are you hard on yourself for the quality of the meals you make? Probably not. So if you treat art as something utilitarian, as something that just has to be done every day, then the end product doesn't matter nearly as much as the act of doing it. And the more you do this, the better you'll get, especially if you're reading lots and studying the craft as you go. Hope this helps 😊

Most recently, my mom passed in February and very dear friend and confident passed last month. I’ve been stuck in a state analysis paralysis, and as a creative…it’s been difficult to create anything. A creative's work is never done. Even when I'm creating, I always get more ideas. That voice is never silent for me. When I'm at work, I'm almost always thinking about them. And I learned to love it

I wonder whether you're preaching to the choir here. I used to tell my depressed musical, artistic ex he needed a hobby. He was great at collecting equipment, which then gathered dust. As a lifelong professional artist and multi-hobby crafter, I always get the back-handed compliment that this admirer 'doesn't have the patience'. Now that I'm 72 and in my seventh year as a piano beginner, I've learned that patience is the secret ingredient in talent.

What I've come to learn in my journey , is the most effective strategies are usually the the simple and basic ones Like this video. Stop overthinking and just do it! Just create, doesn't matter if it's good or not, just practice practice practice practice. Don't compare yourself to others, nothing is holding you back, who cares about the outcome, just enjoy the process❤❤❤

I'm 41 and just in the last few months have started painting and writing. I have always wanted to but didn't feel I was good enough. If something wasn't perfect I've failed. The last few weeks I have created things that were so less than perfect but in the days after the paining starts to look better to me. The critical voice is often too loud when you are in the middle of it. Mine dies down over time. And now I can see improvement from practise

I resonate with a lot of this! I thought I didn't have the time until I started making it a priority, now I do at least one creative thing a day and that's usually working on a project for my channel. It's amazing what you can actually accomplish when you allocate time toward it!

bravo, good job. Enjoyed the passion :) I was particularly stoked that the content is coming from a father of two, working full time on something else.Ive been cramming in a song a week the last six months (finished up two weeks ago) i also thought i didnt have time, I did....... thought it would have to be sometimes taken from other things or "down time" I will say , i feel the nuance here missing that i expereinced is that, there are some prices to pay and i think its striking a balance, but maybe thats kinda given.
