The driver shortage will only get worse the more that company employees sit in a office and dictate to drivers how to do their job. If you can't trust drivers to do the job you hired them to do then do it yourself.

Why would a owner / executive of a big trucking company want a gym at truck stops? That's just another thing to keep you off the road and prevent you from making that impossible delivery some logistics expert scheduled. Seriously, the big companies don't give a damn about your health. By the time your health goes bad you will have too much experience and making too much money. The company would rather hire someone new out of school because they can pay him peanuts. Then 7 years later that driver is traded in for a new one again. They don't give a shit about your health.

OK I know my truck, like personally know it. I know when to pre/post trip it. As a flat bedder I walk around my truck/trailer constantly and am always looking at it. For the most part I agree with this video, I would have fired numerous drivers in the 23 years since I got my cdl, but numerous drivers have problems, i.e. family, health, breakdowns. We can only control what we can. If I am late to a receiver, ok, so what. They will hold you there for hours even if you are on time. Don't blame professional drivers for missing appointments. Blame the dispatcher for setting it without thinking of the possibility of problems. I have many times been told, well so and so said you would be here at this time, I asked that person, did you talk to me? I know when and where I will be at any given time without delays. Don't blame the drivers, we do what we can given the constraints that we have.

Frederick you are exactly right these planners do a mathematical equation on what time it is for you to get there at the best of times always they don’t allow for things to happen or if you have to chain on Donners pass or something like that or any number of things that could happen out there on the road or maybe the driver just doesn’t feel good or sick there are many things that can cause you to be late and they do not ever Take an account for that and the reason being is competition for getting the loads The one who said you can get it their fastest and the cheapest usually gets a job and there’s a sad fact of it and it’s a drivers fault if they can’t do it on the Planer time schedule And I have ran into places where they schedule you to make it but yet they do not schedule you time to get out of there and find a place to park They will put you in red on your time but just as long as the freight was there it’s OK for the. This is the problem I’m having. My company keeps giving me loads back to back where I don’t have time to even stop to eat or use the bathroom. Then when I call telling them I need to reschedule they say I’m wasting time and not trip planning properly. My last load they gave me at 1pm and wanted me to drive 15.5 hours. I’m flatbed too so I needed securement time and a 10 hour reset so more like 28.5 hours. And they expected me to be at the receiver the next day at 11am… at this point I’m getting pissed because I’m having to neglect my own health for the sake of trying to be on time in fear of being fired. And I’m only taking home $800 per week average. That amount of money is absolutely not worth the stress they’re putting me under. I didn’t sign up to be treated like a f*cking slave.

Pre-trips are the biggest crock going. It's your piece of equipment but trucking companies cut corners to save costs then blame the driver. If you take care of your equipment properly I should only have to do a quick visual to make sure nothing out of the ordinary has happened. If I got to check brake shoes etc your not maintaining your equipment. I've seen trailers come out of a safety and a month later need to have brakes. Oh it passed at the time they say.

Amen brother. Report something wrong on the trailer you just picked up and you're a complainer and a problem driver. Get caught at the scale with that trailer and you failed to do a proper pretrip. Always the drivers fault. Don't drive for big companies. Small companies treat drivers better.

@lungelinecowboy

@@mike-sk2li there's some tricks to do it yourself. One is to put an electrical tie on each brake chamber rod. With the brakes off slide them against the chambers. I'm glad to be in Europe where we have privacy laws. Data and tickets etc isn't automatically shared always. This means if an officer hands you a ticket then nobody will ever know. A ticket from a camera or tickets that involve the company, they will know, but insurance won't know. Also I think it's important to be honest. I'm a bit of a fender bender. 2 minor damages in 6 months. I always tell the manager. The good thing is that when they find damage without knowing who did it they will not suspect you because you've shown to be honest about it in the past. It all works 2 ways. Trucking is difficult, companies are always blaming the drivers. Actually DRIVERS possess an IMPORTANT ROLE for the GROWTH of the company. Without drivers you guys will be ZERO.. What are the benefits that companies providing to the DRIVERS..They are sacrificing their life to do their job. Staying away from family is the biggest sacrifice. So my questions are; - are you guys paying enough for drivers for what they are doing( staying away from family, delivering goods securely, driving on the road without any accidents etc..) - why you guys paying for the miles driving? (that will cause speeding, accidents) ***pay for HOURS**rather than paying for miles - pay for EVERYTHING such as pre-trip, post-trip, waiting time to reset the hours cuz the truckers are still at the work place while they we’re waiting for the next cycle of hours that they can drive. So you guys are supposed to pay for that time too. IF NOT TRUCKING WILL BE A SHIIT ALWAYS***

Many times when drivers display these negative attributes there's a problem with the company as well. For example I work for a company that probably pays top level wages but that's where the positive stops. They lie to their workers, they make them ride and unsafe equipment to save costs, the dispatch and operations are incompetent many times, they don't pay detention and such as agreed upon étc... the list could go on to 20 to 50 more things.. It's easy to say sure just go out and get another company. But, this will hurt the driver's wages which is why he is in the show to begin with.. so the driver bears with it and with a poor attitude and doesn't give 100%. Yes these type of bad behaviors will fall back on the driver and he is only hurting himself but, it's hard to argue with his psychology

Timing couldn't be worse since I already slept and been waiting to drive all day. When it was time for me to get some rest now had to drive most of the night tired. I was new and didn't realize I should have turned down the trip. This led me to bump the yellow guard poles and a couple times got knocked down. Dispatch was so poorly done I only drove 700 - 900 miles per week. Their scheduling kept me driving exhausted literally every time I went out. Intentionally doing this? Don't know. What I do know is that driving for other companies I had a completely clean record with no incidents let alone accidents. I actually went on to receive several safe driving awards and out of a 2,000 truck fleet always was in the top 25 for fuel conservation. Dispatch can make or break some inexperienced drivers. I should have known better then to drive tired so let this be known for all the newbies out there. Don't drive tired or distracted. You will hit something eventually.

This might be rare today, but some trucks still have CB's... don't get caught in Ontario using it while driving. It's considered a hand held device and you could get pinched. I remember there was a grace period for a while and I'm not sure if it's over yet, but don't chance it. Yes, this can be verified through the Ministry of Transportation.

Wow, didn't know that, that's dumb... CB's are awesome, especially for new drivers, it helped me a lot when I first started... Is there a permit for that? Just seems odd.

I can't speak for Ontario, but the FCC in America has ruled that using a CB is protected by FCC regulations. It falls within the "one button push" requirement to use. The DOT cannot stop you from using a CB in a vehicle. This would go for any two-way radio such as a business radio, HAM radio, etc.

@@brandonhebert5485 You're lucky. Ontario that I was referring to is, in case I didn't mention it, I the province in Canada. Here it's the MTO and the provincial government. You cannot have a cellphone in your hand unless it's for 911, and a CB is also classified as illegal to have in your hand for any reason. Channel 9 monitoring ceased years ago here. Unless you can tie it into your handsfree system of the vehicle and I know of none that do, if caught here, you will get ticketed and it's a painful one too that includes points and a insurance premium increase that will blow your socks off.

My second question, what happened when you get to the location and drop your load do you always come back with another load or sometimes you come without load. It seems that companies are still promising the moon to get drivers to sling freight and putting up with whatever they get as long as there is a heartbeat in the cab. I do think though that better drivers would stay in the business if the pay was fair. When I left I figured I was making about 8 bucks an hour for all the time in the cab on the road. I went logging in a camp and was making 800 dollars a day without the included meals and lodging. Big difference.

Sit there and shut up and don't get paid and if you complain, you'll be fired. Obviously a case of beer the night before heading out is going too far. You're pretty much guaranteed to be very drunk, you won't sleep restfully, and probably be hitting the road with a hangover. But I don't share Ronen's apparent complete disdain for alcohol during your off time. Legal limit for CDL holders is .04, which is barely buzzing. Your body clears .01 per hour. So if you enjoy two or three beers in the evening and sleep 7-10 hours, I don't see why there should be any issue with that. Now if you do that everyday, you probably have a problem.

Alcohol isn't allowed in a commercial vehicle in any form. Not even at a truck stop. If you are seen drinking a beer in a truck at a truck stop, you could get a dui. You have to be outside the vehicle, the few I know that drink once in awhile will only do it on their 34 hour reset and they end up at a hotel after a night of drinking.

I am laughing hysterically at this video. No company can afford to treat drivers like this! Not when there are 100,000 jobs needed to be filled nation wide. In my case, the company that I drive for( Spotter truck) all communications for trailer moves is done through text, and phone calls. So not only am I breaking the law every minute of my day, I am forced to deal with it. They refuse to upgrade comm's, and the outfit that we communicate with, and move trailers for, don't know how to leave voice mails. And since I don't have a personal assistant, I am the answering service! We are NOT ALLOWED To PRETRIP our trucks! We have no paperwork, and or ways to confront the company for these violations. I have "No Boss" other than a phone number to call. There is no supervisor, or any other contact, other than HR. My truck breaks, I take it to a local shop, they fix it, and there is my inspection! This video, is a "Best case scenario" of the trucking world. Most companies will fight you tooth and nail when you pretrip a truck and shut it down for a violation! Most of the trailers I move every day have not been inspected in the last decade, let alone pretriped! The DOT never bothers us, and we rarely ever get stopped. Hell My truck doesnt even have a seat belt shoulder strap, from the factory! What a joke!
