I'm 58 and just started BJJ.. I've gone to 2 classes and i really enjoy it. I got knee issues so ive been a bit concern if i should continue. This Video and others has boosted my confidence. Thank you for posting
Na, it was weird and uncomfortable for the interviewer and us. Not funny even a little bit. If you laughed you are the type of person to laugh when someone says I don’t know about parachuting. I just can’t see why you would jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Harhar slaps knee.
Im 48 and starting training 2 months ago, its hard, I struggle with my cardio and flexibility compared to the other guys in my gym, this video certainly gave me a big boost
I hear you, Jon. I am 56, and started training Judo 3 months ago, and I still struggle, particularly with cardio, flexibility, muscle soreness and arthritis. And those things can affect the amount I train each week, and - more important to me - my motivation, but I am trying to be disciplined, rather than being concerned about motivation. I am addicted.
Jesus Cristo Very true. I hadn’t wrestled in 40 years, but that mentality, experience and attitude is hardwired in my brain. As soon as I was on the mat, I felt at home. But after a while (a couple years) I realized I had to stop being a wrestler, and become a “jiujitsero” - I’m still working on that. Every adult brings a lifetime of experience with them to the mat. For me, the most interesting thing is to see how the heat and flames of jiujitsu forges those experiences into something new and beautiful.
WOW. that is amazing. the complexity of BJJ just kills me the most. YEs I am afraid of injuries but the complexity or trying to remember hundreds , if not thousands , of moves is beyond anything I have ever done. When I did Muay Thai it was just basic kick, elbow, knee and punch.
Us older guys like to clear out throats before we start talking! Speaking of which, I'm about to start my first BJJ training at 49, two months shy of my 50th birthday. This video really helped alleviate some of my concerns. Thank you.
You are so incredibly dumb. Just 'cos one guy can do it means nothing. There are lots of people that would quit this kind of sport at 50, due to injuries.
@@boliussa well, yes he should know that it's not easy just because this guy has excelled at it. I just don't like calling people dumb, BUT he may be naive or he may know that it's not going to be easy and he's just taking this guy's energy as inspiration. But I get what you're point is.
Love this video. i got my 1st Dan in Japanese Ju Jitsu when i was 61, im 63 now and training for 2nd Dan. As they say in Galaxy Quest " Never give up, never surrender " and that is so true
Great video. I'm a 57yo blue belt and loving jiu-jitsu. I've only competed once. I got smashed but it was still fun. I'm considering competing at the Master Worlds in August. Seeing guys like Jim are extremely motivating. Thanks.
I started BJJ at 66 years old, under Professor Mario Yokoyama , who was awarded his black-belt by the late Ryan Gracie. I am now 69(in a few days). At my age you have no choice but to leave your ego at the door, and you have to be determined, for one does not have the strength and stamina of a man or woman in their 20's.The effort and strain, along with getting used to being sore all the time, is worth it - "if it does not challenge you, it does not change you".
I'm 73 and just started last week. Lots of past sports injuries but have experience in judo, TKD, boxing and wrestling and Krav Maga. Need to lose 25 lbs and gain some flexibility.
41, just started a month ago after a long break.. Cardio, and mobility need work but I'm in it for the long run. Just to stay fit and play fight on the mat.. Take your time, curb your ego, know your limits, and have fun..
I am 58 and re-entered bjj after 20 years out of the sport. I am enjoying it and my mature approach of not trying to compete physically with guys 25 years younger has forced me to develop my control techniques....i think i am starting to piss them off a little...hahaha
I'm really thinking about learning BJJ. I turn 50 this year, but I've also lost 110 lbs in the last 10 months, so I'm feeling pretty fit right now. This guy gives me hope.
I've been training in the martial arts since the 80s I'm now 53 and looking to add to my continued training Bjj is something I'm definitely interested in and now that I've seen this story I want to give it a try myself
Thanks for posting this. I really admire Jim for doing this. I myself am 56 and started training Judo about 3 months ago. I do love it, but, as Jim said, at this age you have to be concerned about your heath in terms of diet, and so on. I also find that being disciplined (especially in the face of injuries and age-related bodily aches and pains, such as arthritis) is the most important thing, because the physical challenges can affect my motivation to train.
BJJ not only has challenge me, but I have found myself through it. Put aside your fears, if you have the heart, then you are never too old - if you do not, then you are too old for it at any age. Transcend yourself, move past imagined limitations, and remember Hélio Gracie trained on the day he died, and he was in his 90's. Too old, not if you have the heart for it, you are not.
Thank you for the video..... I am 55 years.... I used to train Gracie Jiujitsu for several years when I lived in Hawaii ..... I stopped training 26 years .... your video encourages me to start again .....
I started BJJ just recently once I turned 30 and was feeling a little upset that I did not start earlier. After watching this I can say that I have enough time ahead. Oss!
Very nice. 39 yo here, started almost 2 months ago and I'm struggling with my cardio and diet (turns out radical changes to diet, even for better, have some impact on your gut bacteria, and you really don't want to practice Jiu Jitsu without being sure you don't need to go to the toilet for the next several hours. Still managing to do 3 or 4 trains per week and feeling the improvement.
Great video. as a 62 year old doing Judo and some BJJ was great. I commenced training in Judo aged 10 still trying competed in Australian Kodokan Championships in October 2018 over 40 under 90 kg division getting Silver. The young fella demonstrated the North south very well. I have trouble getting it. That description was wonderful. Respect young fella from Old Aussie. Hpding to get my Shodan this year after being a Judo brown belt since 1976 think that is enough time on 1st Kyu?
50 here only able to train on Saturdays drive 1.5 hrs 1 way been at it for 15 months just did my 1st competition no one in my age so I was offered to drop down to the 30 year olds in gi won gold....same issue in nogi offered to move up too heavy weight and 30 year olds and i did took silver never too old people love it..
Awesome stuff! Thank you Jiujitsujudy! I came looking for inspiration and that's good enough for this 53 YO former wrestler I'm going to give it a shot. What's the worst thing that can happen? Don't answer that;)
Wow! I’ve been a fence sitter for a few decades. Primarily because there were no places to train in my area. Then once we had training locations, I had no money. I’ve recently signed up my 7yr old and thought I was possibly too old and out of shape to train as well. This video gives me hope.
His first sentence is exactly why I am here.. Watching my 6, 8 year old do BJJ has got me inspired.. Plus, they're gonna be able to whoop me soon if I don't learn some moves.. lol.
I'm a Certified Fitness Trainer, turning 40 this July and on track to get back to 240 lbs but gained 10 lbs now during this quarantine but I'm more than sure I can lose the 10 lbs this summer as I was 265 lbs in 2018 and only through taking my ISSA certification I unlocked the methods to burn the most fat, eat the right foods, and what food hacks I need to implement to be the healthiest I can. I am very much interested in JJS and Kickboxing/Muay Thai. I'll probably pick JJS this next year. There's a Gracie JJS in my city, so I'll drop in sometime.
This is very inspirational. It’s great to see guys of this age doing Jiu Jitsu let alone competing. It does take a special mindset to become a champion but I believe anyone can do it. Some just have to work harder than others. Great video 👍🏻
I am the Moroccan Taekwondo champion in the years 1986 1987 1989 and I stopped training for 27 years. I have two sons, the big one is 13 years old and the little one is 6 years old. When I take them to the Taekwondo hall, I feel nostalgic to play the game again. I teach them how to play like champions and they are distinguished. The little one looks a lot like me, he doesn’t He is afraid to play with someone who is older than him and plays with manliness, unlike the old man. He is an artist in his game, but he is very afraid. This is what prompts me to return to practice Taekwondo in order to stand by my children
Wrestling is the best foundation onc can have. Once a wrestler, always a wrestler. I'm older than Jim and recently got interested in grappling. It feels very natural to me. "Oops, sorry! is what we never want to hear." :-)
@@jiujitsujudy Back in the day, some of the guys used to wear some plastic then wrap themselves in a mat to lose weight. Crazy! I always envied the heavyweights, lol
I notice around 4:35 her right arm is up and over her body, she just kind of pulled it out to give him room to flatten out and choke, if she left it there would it of protected her and prevented the choke, or would it then become something like an arm in choke? ty
Super motivating video and comments section. I'm 40 and just got started a month ago. I injured my rib cage in my first live rolling session and now I'm trying to keep the motivation and hope alive that I am not too old and too out of shape to carry on. Its cool to see and hear about all of you older guys that are thriving in BJJ. This is just a minor setback, even if it takes months to heal.
Awesome Glad I found this video. I am 41 and have not trained since receiving my brown belt(only a few times after :). This inspired me and love the humor!
I started Jiu Jitsu when I was 19 going on 20 years old. Been doing it for 7.5 years. Hopefully one day I get to become a champion, even if it's my own right. 😅
@@jiujitsujudy Awww thank you!!! 😄 You made me feel so much younger and made my day! I will do my best and keep it up. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to compete with the hardcore black belts by the time I'm 30! But for now as a poor college student, I'm stuck with poor man's Jiu Jitsu tournaments Grapplefests and Naga.
Amazing profile!! I’m 42 and just competed for the first time a few months ago- took silver in GI & NOGI. Looking forward to many more years of training and competing... This man is a stud!!
