Being alternative is a huge aesthetic people that tend to cling to online -- from opting for huge platform shoes, all black looks, and doing temu hauls for days, it seems more accessible than ever to be a part of a subculture due to the rise of Tiktok and social media. However, is a 2 dollar amazon dupe all it takes to be goth? Is being punk all about how well you're able to shop for plaid jeans on aliexpress? Is all of this all just a battle of how good someone can be at looking the part? Join me today as we discuss the missing ethical code behind a lot of individuals out there and how so many people are genuinely not trying at all ghgberhjugber obviously I am not talking about people fighting poverty everyday pls

Punk is more about the political movement, though, which a lot of things named 'punk' have nothing to do with. I don't think people can really call themselves punk if they listen to Avril Lavine or something else that is just edgy pop. And people always forget Wednesday Addams for example is a gothic literature fan, not a goth. Gothics are forgotten so much in these conversations when Victorian fashion styled after mourning attire is so commonly worn, it's weird.

@monster-enthusiast Yes, water is wet. But I'm moreso talking about the stuff that labels itself punk when it's at best emo. That's what "normies" think punk is about- I've talked to so many people who think they listen to punk when they don't. This is coming from, you guessed it, a punk. It's still not dominantly a music subculture, you can be a punk without listening to that, you'd just need to enact social change with an anarchist mindset.

Don’t blame it all on the “fake alt” ppl. A lot of the times we listen to the music WE like and dress how WE want and people call us goth/emo/punk for the way we dress. I’ve NEVER labeled myself any of those things, but other people call me them and when people hear that they say I’m fake even tho I never asked to be called that in the first place. I’ve never described myself as any alt group, and if I were to correct ppl anytime they called me a certain alt group, I would be having that convo every single day. As someone in Lolita Fashion, the importance of a subculture, necessary gatekeping (to some extents), and why they have certain rules, looks, and concepts is often lost on a lot of onlookers and (while this can be said for a lot of music and/or fashion based subcultures) a lot of them tend to see the fashion as a trend that you can pick up and put down at any moment, rather than the long time investment it is and how you're meant to take your time with the fashion and not speedrun a perfect coord in 3 business days with little knowledge of how the fashion is worn and how to have an eye for coordinating outfits. 3:46am ramble over, thank you for reading

The same thing can literally be said about the Japanese style, Gyaru. Gyaru is very popular in Japan and has always been known amongst the locals of nearly every city in Japan. But many people online (specifically TikTok) have been taking a liking to the style. I have no problem with that. But SOME PEOPLE think that wearing blonde hair extensions and a cheetah 'y2k' tank top is all that it takes to be a Gyaru. NO. it's SO much more than that. back in the 2000's girls were shamed in the streets for wearing Gyaru fashion, yet most of them still continued doing what they loved. Now it's just about the makeup and the clothes, whatever. what I'm trying to say is, if you're going to start dressing a certain way, really own it. explore archived blogs from 2010, go through magazines, watch old RU-vid videos!!! there's so much to explore, yet some people want to stay in a small box, and it literally upsets me.

It really does show how much of a disease consumerism actually is. Punk and goth in specific are a strong movement of people who value second hand, DIY, fighting against the current system. And the fact it’s been reduced to an ‘aesthetic’ you can get on a cheap nasty fast fashion website is downright tragic People find it easy to understand why someone is called a ‘metalhead’ when they listen to metal music but struggle when it comes to goth and punk?!!?!
@jaman_jy
@jaman_jy 8 месяцев назад
the 'problem', per se, is that these cultures aesthetics have been disconnected from their movements at some point, and most people think looking the part is enough, or project onto others. i've met a bunch of 'punks' who were either ApOliTiCaL or racist/homophobic/etc, which just doesn't make sense, right?? and i don't think it's gatekeepy to point out that these cultures have and always have had politics at their core values, above aesthetism. the poor people argument doesn't even necessarily hold up (when it comes to fast fashion) because of the history of those counter/subcultures. a bunch if not all (ie. grunge, punk..) stem from anti imperialism, anti consumerism and anticapitalism standpoints, and were started by -mostly -poor people. they are about finding new ways to live outside of those systems, to get by, to Demolish™ said systems.

No you’re totally right. It’s not so much simply buying fast fashion itself bc lots of people basically have to, it’s the disregard for morals and human rights while labeling yourself as apart of a subculture that often includes counterculture politics and is most defined by the music taste, a lot of which being again, about protesting and politics lmao. So essentially, the problem is just being a fake / poser and not actually understanding or standing for what you’re supposedly representing. For example, I mostly agree with Mia but I also buy from SheIn. But I also thrift as much as I can of my wardrobe and DIY “edgy” clothing (up cycling) when I can, I mostly listen to alternative music, I’m very liberal/left to the point some would consider me radical, have taken part in peaceful protests, and I’m going to be a high school teacher where one of my main goals is not only to help my students succeed educationally but also have a safe space, be able to express themselves, be weird, be mad, be upset. So OTHER than SheIn, I think I very much fit what it means to be “alternative.”

being alternative is about your view points on society and you’re actual music taste. i get it we’re cool, people want to be cool i respect that. you can wear whatever you want but dont label yourself as a subculture if you know absolutely nothing about it just to “ fit in” you already fit in! chances are if you’re not already alternative you are the societal norm. but to say you’re punk or goth and then spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on one haul on a fast fashion brand you completely go against some key parts of actually being alternative. it’s not about how much money you have it started out with being poor and hating the disgusting parts of society and the world while embarrassing the disgusting parts of yourself. being alternative isn’t supposed to be aesthetic it’s supposed to be fun and accepting, it’s a movement against shitty things, but shitty consumeristic yuppies want to be different and sad so bad that they have to buy their emo phase. the music is fueled by the beliefs and the fashion is inspired by the music.

It really feels like people are just giving new definitions to words describing these communities. It's largely pushed by big brands as they use it to describe a piece of clothing. As a goth, I totally agree with everything said, stuff like temu and amazon describing their clothes with 'goth, emo, punk' changes the meaning from 'counterculture' to 'clothing characteristic'. It's also a logical consequence that influencers on tiktok start 'inventing' styles like 'clean goth' (nastynastynasty) because a lot of people don't realize the actual meaning of being goth, punk or emo. I consider myself super "feminine" now, but there was a time where I was definitely alt/punk, and guess what? It wasn't just because of the way I dressed. The way I dressed at the time was mostly just a reflection of the music I loved and how I felt. And while my interests, music taste, and overall style has changed, a lot of the values that you mentioned that are at the core of being alt are still with me, and it's cool to still be able to connect with people in that community still without necessarily looking like them. At the end of the day, any style isn't really about how you look. I definitely die a little inside every time I see someone on TikTok just buy clothes thinking that it will change who they are.

you just described who I am now, I used to feel like I had to dress "alt" all the time because it was the only way to get others to know about my lifestyle, and regardless of the judgement I'd get back then, it was fun and I don't regret looking that way one bit. However, even if I stopped caring about how I looked and dressed the way that I want to (that switches from being stereotypically "alt" to extremely pastel and cutesy), you still can't take the lifestyle, music taste, and beliefs out of me (I haven't shopped in an actual store in years despite my shift in style), which is the point of being alt. The same could be said for those who think that dressing "alt"/""edgy"" will change them, you need to have the more important parts of the subculture within you to be considered "alt".

"Alt" can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Unlike things like goth, emo, punk, lolita, etc. there is not a particular way to be alt. In fact, all of the things I mentioned are alt. You can gate keep what is those specific things because they are because they are specific things- unlike alt. Someone might gravitate to the term alt for many reasons. Maybe that reason is dressing in a way that is out of the ordinary or inspired by alt subcultures while not being a specific one. That's ok.

All I hear, are the same arguments people made about hot topic when they were the number 1 “alt” seller back in the late 90s early 2000s. This argument has gone on for years, and despite you claiming that you’re not putting a period on the conversation, I didn’t hear a single new perspective or thought or solution that hasn’t been going around since “alt” went corporate. I do think that there are ethical ways of shopping (at least from 2 of the brands you mentioned) and it doesn’t have to be so black and white/all or nothing. When I buy something new from let’s say dolls kill for instance (since I’m aware of their manufacturers I do support them and I feel like they do listen to criticism and try to do better)- I keep that garment for years, I repair it, alter it when it no longer looks right, or use the material for something else. I see it as a complex issue- with the ways people are buying, the thought process of “I can’t be seen in the same thing multiple times” people buying things just for photo shoots ect. Then you’ve got your absolute should be abolished companies like shien who DO NOT pay their manufacturers fair wages, who flood the market with clothes that fall apart after a day, and are combined with that same toxic wasteful mindset mentioned earlier. You’re right though- everyone should be trying to do better and do their part.
@evairywon
@evairywon 8 месяцев назад
hey, you've made some good points but I just want to supplement by saying that I wouldn't call dolls kill a good store to buy from. They're pretty similar to shein in that rhey also flood the market with cheap clothes, their manufacturers have like a zero rating in terms of sustainability practices and they have a history of stealing designs from smaller creators (such as Nicole Orchard. What sucks more is they stole an awesome design from a local Melbourne fashion student who had literally JUST started their online business and who makes their clothes with insane quality.) It sucks because seeing their clothes on pictures online bc it makes them seem high fashion at semi-affordable prices, but as someone who's bought from them in the past I know that the clothes I've gotten are cheap. It's nice that you spend the time to fix them up and repair them, that's actually a really commendable thing in this day and age, but I would still suggest putting that effort into secondhand clothes rather than into the stuff from dolls kill. If you want to look into the claims then I would recommend you look them up on good on you, and also read the article Aria Silva-Espinosa wrote about them on adolescent.net
@rhaybiesdolls
@rhaybiesdolls 8 месяцев назад
@@evairywon thankyou friend, and I appreciate your desire to inform me about dolls kill and there was a time when I agreed with you but I have recently begun supporting the brand again. I disagree with that about shien - I would not lump them in with SHEIN, as their clothes are much higher quality, and most of the pieces that I do have, have lasted me for years and can be fixed or altered into different things. First of all again- the quality of clothing is higher than that of Shein and number two the price point is nowhere near the same as Shiens because they do actually price their clothes at a point to where they pay their manufacturers a fair wage. I know this because I know who their manufacturers are because I’ve looked into them, and I’ve gotten first fit samples with manufacturers tags on them so that is how I was able to look into them. As for the stuff that I agree with you on, including the design theft and some of the ignorant and dumb shock content designs - as far as I’m aware all of those issues are old and have been addressed and dealt with and I don’t see the company doing those things anymore, I started getting back into them from watching the Whatnot live auctions, and I have sort of seen over the course of 7 months of almost daily viewing that They do listen to and value like valid and current criticisms and feedback - like they do listen. I’ve seen it and they try to do better based on criticisms that they can actually address, but if they’re not doing something anymore how can they keep addressing it especially if they’ve already addressed it and apologized? All of the graphics that they do now all of their designs are all done by like an in-house graphics team they’re actually really proud of that now, they did a bunch of stuff for charity on Whatnot in the last six months too. Plus I ended up getting to tour their headquarters and meet the designers and shipping department, and all the people behind the brand, and they do care very much about what people think of their image and their brand, and it was also seeing headquarters and meeting the people who designed the clothes, seeing how many people that worked there that said that their life had genuinely been changed for the positive by the company, and there were so many different kinds of people working there, and they all just seemed like genuinely really happy to be there and like invested in what they were doing and like in finding out what we want as customers. It was that and the whatnot auctions and the daily interactions there and being able to look into the manufactures that made me decide to give them a second chance - because they’re not doing the same things anymore. All the issues that I see circulating about them are bringing up the same old issues about things that they’re not doing anymore. Now the second that I see them start stealing designs again, or putting out offensive designs, then I’ll voice my opinion and put monetary pressure on them to do better. A lot of the other complaints about them about size inclusivity, and all of that- those are all things that EVERY alt brand struggles with and gets complaints about, in fact it’s a fashion wide problem. I do really feel like I’ve seen them trying though. I don’t feel bad for shopping with them because I do try to shop sustainably and do my best and do my part. I don’t wear clothes once or just for a picture. I keep my clothes until they literally disintegrate and I either donate them or make them into something new. I buy a lot of secondhand, but there is certain pieces that I really love and when it comes to Dolls kill and I feel like they’re a lot more ethical than fucking SHEIN or romwe, and I would say they are about as bad as forever 21 or h&M or whatever was, however my clothes from dolls kill have lasted longer than my stuff from those places. So yeah I’m giving them another chance and I do happen to buy a lot of secondhand and consignment, and make my own clothes. I grew up a political activists daughter and generally try to be a non negative presence on the planet

A lot of people dont understand that diy ing and cutting and stitching etc is A PART of any kind of alt culture, styling and sewing, putting 10 hours into goth makeup i mean have you seen the tapered hair? remember then emo kids used to spend days putting safety pins of their clothes? Im never gonna take seriously anyone with bought shein clothes trying to be "alt" it s not gatekeeping is just not accepting disrespect to cultures that people have fought for amd worked for to build for decades. And dont even get me started on the "i want a goth gf" shit and it s literally just the most basic girl i ve ever seen, literally 30 of them in target at the same time, but with a black tshurt and rubber choker

First of all they are white and second of all they have enough money to shop sustainably. They also has values that clearly do not align with whatever subculture they claim to be in, only recently followed bands like korn, mcr and slipknot even though their most recent playlist is an 'emo dazai' playlist yet contains toxic by britney spears and teeth by 5sos lmaooo. also btw they've changed a lot since this😭they no longer support fast fashion and are a lot more respectful so we are still friends:)

As someone who dresses in lolita fashion, i cannot stand how lolita dresses and fashions have turned fast fashion when its literally grown from a circular fashion structure of second hand buying and selling, turning into just buying bad replicas of legit brand pieces that can be bought second hand or first hand but lasts forever. Its also a fashion movement that has some political history to it, of reclaiming markers of society to subjegate women in a way thats liberating too along w its design elements from its history, that was started by people who wore vintage clothing and made things their own.

Why do they have to fit your definition of it? People really need to learn to mind their own business and get the hek over things that really don’t matter, maybe focus on something that is actually effecting the world? Idk I just find it weird to hate on a bunch of people for liking a style, and I also find it funny that if you don’t listen to EVERY alternative artist ever, then you’re a “faker” it’s ridiculous, you guys are ridiculous
