Disclaimer: Never heat your leather with high temperatures for prolonged periods of time. Only use warm temps and continuously move your heat source's position in order to warm your oils into the leather. This is what I do with my shoes, but what you do with yours is at your own risk.

I’m confused on how he says Saddle soap has high Ph levels yet so does shoe MGK ??? So essentially you can you saddle soap or she MGK being they have similar Ph levels?? why say saddle soap destroys the leather if shoe MGK also has high PH levels I guess shoe MGK will also eventually destroy the leather being that they have the same PH levels as saddle soap ??

John, that's an excellent question! Here's the answer: Saddle soap is manufactured specifically for leather. It’s made for saddles, bags, boots, and shoes and is recommended by brands to use as a regular cleaner. However, since it has a high pH balance, it can actually do more harm to your leather if used alone (without a separate leather conditioner) on a regular basis, especially if not used properly (leaving the lather on the leather). It is true that ShoeMGK has a similar pH, however, their products are used for all kinds of materials like rubber, vinyl, canvas, and more. (Not just leather). So it’s a far more versatile product in comparison. Whereas saddle soap uses soaps and waxes that can dry out the leather if not conditioned, ShoeMGK uses all natural jojoba and coconut oils within the cleaner to rehydrate the leather after it’s cleaned. Because of that, ShoeMGK should theoretically have less of a negative impact on leather than saddle soap. At the end of the day, alkaline products are important to get off all the dirt and grime from your shoes or boots because they change the solubility of the things that you’re trying to clean. However, I would not suggest using such products on a regular basis for cleaning your leather, but when you your leather does need a major overhaul, I’d use them when needed. There are many cleaners out there that are pH-balanced, and ultimately, those would be best for regular usage. At the end of the day, I stand behind ShoeMGK because their cleaner is effective and safe to use on a wide range of materials. On top of that, their hydrating leather cream is an excellent follow-up that protects and prolongs the life of your leather. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any further questions!

I do more than wipe saddle soap off with a dry cloth. That seems like it leaves a film of saddle soap or cleaner behind. I use two brushes and at least two cloths. After an initial wipe down to remove the majority of the soap, I will use a clean brush dipped into clean water to scrub the remaining soap away and then I dry it again with a different clean cloth. Furthermore, I will scrub only one panel of leather at a time. The soap is on the leather for less than 10-15 seconds before I am wiping it away. If the first scrub and rinse does not fully clean the leather, then I may repeat the process. I allow the boots dry for an hour before applying a light coat of a leather conditioner like Bick4. Which conditioner depends on the leather. After a light coat of conditioner, I allow the boots to fully dry at room temperature for 24-48 hours. After thoroughly drying, I will then apply a deep leather conditioner like boot oil or boot grease, again depending on the leather.

There are a lot of ways to make mashed potatoes. I cook my potatoes in the microwave for 4 min then put in oven. I mash them and add butter sour cream and milk. Thats only one way. U may not have a microwave, u may not like sour cream, you may not eat dairy. Sometimes you need different ways presented to you in order to find what you like best. So another video on cleaning leather boots is necessary . Also, I feel compelled to say this to a few of you, why so rude? This man is sharing his knowledge and making some extra money-legally. If you didnt feel this video was necessary, why the hell did you watch it?! I found it quite helpful, not to mention this mans voice is soothing. So, be kind, and go clean something made of leather!!!

Dr Z, this was a great vid. i liked the dipping the brush in water prior to putting on the cleaner. Much more suds this way. The trick with the microfiber over the wood is excellent on the white porus outsole. Lastly the hairblower to help the conditioner infiltrate and "seat" was noticableby effective. I have a question about the black grime that seems impossible to remove entirely -like on the tongue, under the laces esp. Ive read about hacks with things like: Q tips and alcohol; nail polish remover; white vinegar + water; etc. im sure these are harmful and dont work anyway. I thought about maybe a borax and water solution or something mixed w borax. Any thoughts? Along other lines i love the look of the lighter leather on the redwing 1907's, 875's, Rough and Tough, etc. I resist deep cleaning and conditioning these bc i see how it darkens them. Im not trying to mess up a grand worth of boots, but its painting me into an eventual corner. For Eg the ones you cleaned went from a golden-ish color to a darker color, what id describe as Seal brown. So, after your treatment, will they return to the orig color, or lighten back up, to some degree?

Hey friend! Thanks so much for watching. I'm enthused that you got so much from this video! I truly hope this helps you steward your boots better. When it comes to removing the verdigris or other debris ("black grime"), using harsh substances like nail polish remover (acetone), alcohol, or vinegar, can damage the leather. However, they may in fact be the only way to remove certain substances. I personally had to use the rubbing alcohol to remove all that poorly applied pigmented leather cream. My opinion? Go from the least harsh cleaners to the most harsh cleaners (if it gets to that). You'll just have to do it at your own risk. My trick? Just gently try a little at first, and then move to the next cleaner until it works. As I mentioned in my videos before, modern leather is acidic and you can potentially damage your leather by using borax because its very alkaline. However, if you're at the end of your rope with your boots, it may be worth a try. For the boots that I treated, they will slightly turn lighter but probably not to the original color until a very long time. Originally dark leather that becomes lighter in color is almost always due to dryness. What you can do, and what I'd suggest, is using a non-darkening leather conditioner such as Bick 4. I'd highly recommend that one if you don't want to darken your leather. All the best, my friend. Let me know if you have anything else you need!

If I ship you my boots, do you want to make a video on cleaning them? If you saw pictures, you'd see you're in for quite a task! I've had my Red Wing 606's since 2009. They been through a lot, have been resoled, but never conditioned or cleaned. I feel bad for my poor fellas.

Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your opinion! Saddle soap was first created in the late 1800s, and it's an older product. Just because something is "designed" for leather, doesn't mean it's the best for it in the modern setting. Horse carriages were "designed" for travel, so should we not use jet planes? You're more than welcome to use saddle soap like I noted in my video, it's just that most people use saddle soap wrong. Modern cleaners fix a lot of those issues. All the best to you, friend!

Hey friend! Thank so much for watching. I'd highly suggest NOT using dish soap because it strips the natural oils and waxes from your leather leaving it to dry and crack. I know people online say that it's an "easy hack" to clean your leather, but in the long run it may damage it permanently. Dish soap was made to get grime and oil off dishes, it's not formulated for leather. I'd rather suggest getting a specially formulated leather cleaner. Nonetheless, you're free to do whatever you decide. All the best!

Hey Bryan! Thanks for your opinion! If you watched my video, I cleaned more than just the mud. This boot is years old with hundreds of hours of wear and grime that I cleaned as well. In my video, I promoted doing your own research and using brands and cleaners that you trust. Although I used ShoeMGK and the product did an awesome job, you're more than welcome to try other brands and follow the same instructions to receive similar results.
