Saddle Soap: Why? What’s in it?

Saddle Soap has been used for years to clean, moisturize, and help preserve leather.
5:10 Click here to skip the explanation of what's in it and get right to how to use it.
In this video I discuss in depth what’s in Kiwi brand Saddle Soap, what it’s for, and demonstrate how to use it on 2 pairs of old shoes.
For a list of the ingredients I went to the SC Johnson website: www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com/...
Generally after cleaning and conditioning with Saddle Soap, you’ll want to continue with polishing your shoes.

I've used saddle soap for over 60 years, I'd tried creams and bees wax a couple times but the kiwi saddle soap is hard to beat. I can remember my grandpa using saddle soap on his saddle as well, that's who taught me about saddle soap.

There are still a cobblers in Europe in all cities. I'm confident that you could get an apprenticeship in the UK. It may not be a formal one, but you would be informed to an equivalent degree. If it is truly your passion I could think of nothing better than pursuing it. Initially you could contact Timpson, a large chain here in the UK. Best of luck Ginger.

I have one within 30 min. I am about to drop of Boots for Resole and new Heels. $65.00. Which these Boots from the late 70s are quality and couldn't be replaced by a comparable quality anywhere close to sixty dollars. In fact I would be looking 200 plus to Replace the boots. So cobbler is a Valid and I believe growing industry. Tons of room for growth. With the right Marketing - customer Education. I would run a Save the planet Campaign. Or something to that effect. My cobbler basically straight up told me that you should never need saddle soap if you're taking proper care of your boots, and that it will diminish the character of your leather if you ever do happen to be unfortunate enough to need to use it. I just took him at his word and never used it on my boots/shoes. In hindsight I had a pair of Dan Post cowboy boots that I should have used it on rather than just tossing them as a loss after they were thoroughly caked in rancid meat, horse dung, and wolf scat from working at a neglected animal reserve. Anyway, really appreciate all of your videos. You're quite thorough and informative on the subjects you choose to broach. It's been really insightful and I've learned a good deal.

I only use Saddle Soap on two occaisons: 1. I just thrifted a pair of shoes and they are really dirty 2. I got mud caked on my shoes (like when I wear my dress boots in wet grass/mud). Since doing this video, I did an interview with Andy Vaughn, owner of Pure Polish Products and he introduced me to a Cleaner Conditioner he makes which I use often now. He talks about Saddle Soap having a negative effect on leather because of the Ph. I don't think using it once in a blue moon will hurt anything, but as with anything we learn about, my beliefs have changed over time. I also like that the Cleaner Conditioner is 3 simple ingredients. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h0DH-AHwKcY.html

@Az-yp8fs
@Az-yp8fs 3 года назад
@@chantakzee Simple answer, yes, assuming you're using it on quality leather. Saddle soap should be used to clean and it does do some conditioning; but if you want to properly nourish the leather every so often then using a cream like the Saphir will do a lot more to condition it. Saddle soap doesn't contain the same kinds of oils and there's a reason why proper creams are used by all the best leather shops all over the world - with Saphir almost universally being regarded as the best. Kiwi saddle soap is a decent product, but their conditioners and waxes are very much a "you get what you pay for" thing - better than not using anything, certainly. Just like with your face or body, soap and moisturising agents should be used together for best effect, rather than just picking one or the other. There are certainly lower priced conditioning agents than Saphir that will still do a good job. Renapur, Woly, Williams, Chamberlain etc. A good leather conditioner will smell and feel like a good face cream or moisturiser.
@mardenhill

saphir isn't necessary. all you need is leather grease from natural ingredients. everything else is price hiking.

Sodium tallowate contains stearic and other fatty acids. Stearic acid is listed as a separate ingredient. It is used in greases as a thixotropic (thickening) agent. So, yes it keeps ingredients from separating. Glycerin is a byproduct of the saponification of tallow to produce soaps. It sounds like this is basically a hydrated form of bar soap with carnuba wax. So, if you run out, use Ivory instead.
@alanmcdonald4423
@alanmcdonald4423 5 лет назад
Sodium tallowate (or any other Sodium Xxxxate) is the INCI name given to an oil or fat that is the product of saponification of that oil or fat with Sodium Hydroxide (aka Caustic Soda). Saponification is the action of mixing an oil and an alkali to make soap. Tallow is frequently used because it is so cheap - particularly in places like Australia and USA where animals are fattened beyond what is required by the market and the surplus fat is used to make cheap soaps. Glycerin is not a byproduct of saponification of tallow. What are generally known as Saddle Soaps are indeed a form of soap. Depending on their purpose - cleaning, conditioning or a combination, they may include unsaponified oils, fats or waxes.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt 5 лет назад
Alan McDonald No. Glycerin is a byproduct of the saponification of all fats and oils, which are fatty acid triglycerides. Glycerides are triesters. The glycerin is the triol portion of the triesters. The fatty acids are the carboxylate portions. Additional glycerine may be added.

@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob Год назад
SORRY for missing your comment. I will give you my honest answer, and let me preface it with the fact that I don't worry much about germs. Odors come from bacteria. Bacteria generally needs a moist environment. The VAST majority of shoes I've ever thrifted are dry. Like BONE dry. I honestly can say that in all the hundreds of shoes I've thrifted, I've never found one that smelled bad. Not one. There were a few that had mold on them and that's a hard pass for me. But to answer your question, I sometimes will jus wipe the interior of with a damp (not wet) cloth, then I'll spray the interior with 70/30 or 80/50 alcohol/water mix in a spray bottle. 2-3 squirts is enough. Then let it air dry. I don't wipe it to let it penetrate, and just to ensure that I don't wipe off any inking/lettering/logos on the lining.

Hi, use a damp cloth when you wipe off the soap. You don't wipe off the soap from your body directly with a dry towel when you are in the shower do you? Also, you are supposed to go back and buff the leather with a dry cloth. It will result in a beautiful shine. I have used Kiwi saddle soap for years on My Joan and David shoes and My Vintage Coach leather handbags. Best product ever and it is not greasy either. Remember, the shoe is leather skin but it is processed to keep it from deteriorating. Kiwi can be found at CVS, Target, Safeway, Giant, Rite Aid..but you have to look on the very bottom of the shoe product shelf to find it. :)
@Princeton_James

That's what I thought. Would You recommend hosing down your boot after you use saddle soap or would that be too much water? I obviously would let them air dry for some time after.
@leathercritic3151
@leathercritic3151 4 года назад
@@Princeton_James According to Marie's reasoning, you should wash your hair. Suffice to say, Saddle Soap is not body soap and you don't treat your shoes like you treat your body. Shoe leathers have been treated with chemicals unlike your body -and- they're shoes. This is despite the fact that most people actually rinse soap off with water and don't wipe off at all. But back to Saddle Soap, it revitalizes and conditions and has some protectants that won't hurt from being left on.
@bluegrasskid4835
@bluegrasskid4835 4 года назад
@@leathercritic3151 Correct, saddle soap DOES NOT need to be rinsed off or wiped off with a damp towel. If you are not planning to condition and/or polish the shoes after cleaning, you would be better to only wipe off with a dry towel so the leather can absorb the oils, waxes etc. in the saddle soap.

Hi Robert, Just found your channel & love it. I use a rather leather conditioner on 1000 mile Wolverine boots..its about the consistancy of toothpaste & it keeps them beautiful & soft. I keep them very clean. Is it advisable to occasionally give them a saddle soap scrub back like your video or just continue with conditioner ? Theres no issue but wondered if decent leather boots need a buildup scrub like your video occasionally. Tks
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 5 лет назад
video3ish - that’s a good question... according to Phil Kalas, owner of Ashland Leather Co, Saddle Soap (or any Soap) does remove some conditioning oils from the leather, but saddle soap as I stated also puts some back in, so in my opinion I would just use it when it needs it (when they get dirty, etc).
@reneehughes7860
@reneehughes7860 4 года назад
Great tutorial. But, prior to cleaning leather shoes/boots you should give them a good brushing to knock dirt/dust off them. I keep a clean horsehair brush that I use just for that only. After brushing down items run your brush lightly over damp washrag & lay bristles up to dry. Then clean the shoes/boots with the saddle soap. Wipe off excess with a damp cloth. Let dry and buff with a soft cloth for luster.

My small two cents. Rinse the soap off with cold water under the sink faucet. You are looking to carry all of the crap away, not scrub it in with a cloth. Saddle soap is made to counteract horse pee and acids, but you need to get it off the leather. Let it air dry for a few mins then hit it with some Lexol while wet. Dry overnight with no heat, then get on with the shine/ Saphir dubbin grease/ Obenauf's oil/ whatever direction you are headed with the shoes.

Saddle soap is a surfacant that brings dirt to the top of the lather. At that point it can be wiped up like coffee grounds on a countertop. Rinsing it off is likely to wash off the oils and conditioners.
@RockandrollNegro
@RockandrollNegro 7 месяцев назад
@@OldGriz708 Which is why you recondition it after you rinse the soap scum off. Just think about it; would you build the lather in a shower on your body, and then step out and start towel drying without rinsing it off? That's disgusting, and it has not cleaned your skin in any meaningful way. Same principle applies to saddle soap.

Inflation has really taken over. $8.00 for a tin of Saddle Soap! In the 1950s Saddle Soap and other shoe polishes were $.99. The tins lasted for at least a year. My sisters wore Saddle Shoes -- black leather on the front and white leather on the back and sides (for those who have never seen Saddle Shoes). The hard thing about the shoes was keeping the black polish from migrating to the white polish. Saddle Soap was applied to the white polish, then the black polish, rubbed in, and buffed off and they were good for the week. My dad's black military dress shoes were also treated with Saddle Soap and it almost made them waterproof -- no salt marks in the winter. How do I know all this? I was the shoeshiner and was paid .25 per shoe! $3.00 went a long way then.

This is an instance where following the directions on the package/box/tin/etc don't apply. Used a damp terry cloth and get a nice sheen on my boots but nowhere close to building a lather as shown in the video. I also let mine air dry before applying polish.

Importantly, after drying and before polishing, you should restore all the moisture lost in the saddle soaping process with some type of nourishing oil or cream. The lanolin and glycerine in saddle soap is not nearly enough to recondition what is lost in soaping.

Ted Hart That takes you down to bare, stained leather. Not needed or desirable for routine light cleaning and maintenance. I have problems with mildew on leather jackets stored during the off season. I use saddle soap, brush it to dislodge anything embedded in the seams, then rinse that section. Then I apply it a second time with a sponge and dry it with a towel. I’ll use Lexol after everything is clean and dry.

Robert hi frank again. Still looking for a pair of size 11 shoes to wear for the first time ever wearing dress shoes. I have looked a couple of times at goodwill, etc. Came close but most shoes there seem to be gargantuan or small sizes so no joy on that. I would still buy a size 11 from you. My feet are kind of narrow if that matters on dress shoes. Like I said I have never worn dress shoes except now that I recall once for my mom when I was 20 years old to take a picture. God bless

Over conditioned? I assume that means they’ve had too much conditioner applied and the leather feels kind of greasy? I can’t say that I have specifically used it in that scenario, but I imagine it would definitely help. If it were me, I would try Saddlesoap first, if that didn’t work I think I would try Saphir Renomat. If that didn’t work then I think I’d go to alcohol (not acetone) on a rag.

Richard I apooogize for missing your comment... but without seeing the shoes it’s so hard to tell. There was obviously some difference in the leathers. I can say if you need to darken one use black polish on the lighter toe cap. It won’t make it black, it will tint it.

Is it bad for your leather shoes? Can you use it straight or do you have to use a conditioner afterwards?
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 2 года назад
You don't have to use conditioner afterwards, as it actually has conditioners in it. According to Andy Vaughn, owner of Pure Polish Products, he says Saddlesoap negatively affects the Ph of leather. My current belief is that it's perfectly fine to use saddle soap, but only use it as needed, and try to avoid using it repeatedly on expensive footwear you'd like to keep for decades. For example, I'll use it when I first purchase a dirty thrifted shoe. I'll use it on my quarter brogue dress boots after they get muddy because I wore them out in a field, but these boots get saddle soaped probably once a year or so only. I avoid using it on my nice dress shoes, as they never get dirty enough to warrant it's use. For the nice dress shoes, I'll clean them off with a damp cloth, and maybe a toothbrush if dirt gets in the welt, then I'll condition them with Pure Polish Cleaner Conditioner. I have an entire video I recently released on how and when to condition leather BTW: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dh00wY0qjU8.html

I use Bickmore saddle soap and nothing else, I also use their leather conditioner, same formula for 100 years I get it at Amazon, it is the same price as Kiwi but it works as well as the higher priced Safir products. I would not waste my money on Kiwi anything especially their shoe creams and waxes because they are a petroleum based product and will actually build up and damage the leather. Also I would not use that much water you only have to get the brush damp once and then use what moisture that is left on the surface of the saddle soap, if the leather becomes saturated with water then the oils and conditioners will not penetrate the leather (water and oil do not mix) you will wind up with a splotchy color, wipe the excess off with a terry towel and buff to a nice shine.

Fiebing's Saddle Soap in the yellow and brown can says: "Dampen with cloth or sponge. Rub lightly over soap to produce lather. Then apply to leather surface. When dry, polish with soft cloth for light lustre." I noticed you didn't let the soap dry before you wiped it off. Did my can miss a step? Is it ok to let dry on the leather? Is it better to wipe off with a towel and then buff out with the brush like you did or is letting it dry and then buffing it out without the cloth gain the exact same results?
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 5 лет назад
BucsFanInMargaritaville that’s interesting, maybe it’s just the way I’m interpreting the directions, but I don’t think that means to let the soap dry on the leather, I would still wipe it off very soon after applying it, but I think it’s saying to wait until the leather is try to buff it. The Kiwi directions say “... Rub well into leather. Wipe off excess lather with a damp cloth. Repeat procedure as necessary. When the leather is dry buff with soft cloth to develop luster.”
@crazypiratesquirrel3038

Robert Powers Interesting. It's amazing how two products basically the same can have two different instructions. I've now searched the Internet a bit more and found the instructions printed on the products seem split, 50% seem to say let it dry before wiping off & 50% to wipe off with slightly damp cloth before it dries like you did. Honestly your way of wiping off before drying seems the most logical considering the debate of whether the soap is acidic/ph level. My reason for cleaning is slightly different than your video. I live in a humid state. When I pulled my 1yo smooth dark brown/black leather trimmed UGG wool lined slippers out from the back of my closet about a week ago I found a few tiny spots of white mildew on the top toe area. The internet said to wash with saddle soap after wiping the spores off in an outdoor area. I purchased the Fiebing's Saddle Soap, Golden Mink Oil, a small round brush & long buff brush off the internet because my search didn't come up with a local store that sold the stuff/could give me advice. I haven't applied the Mink Oil yet because I think I need to redo the cleaning step again lol. Thank you for your video and your quick answer. If you have any more hints or tips for my situation it would be very much appreciated!
