I like how this scene ties into what Kyle Reese said. "It can't be bargained with, can't be reasoned with, doesn't feel pity, remorse or fear, and it will not stop -- EVER -- until you are dead." Being shot didn't stop it, getting hit with cars didn't stop it, being consumed in flames didn't stop it, and even being cut in half by a bomb it refuses to stop until its mission is accomplished. This is the kind of single minded determination that made the Terminator so scary.

Well there is that + there is something about T-800 concept here when it was non CGI that was much more terrifying than any of the other CGI terminators since....whether its T-1000, TX, or T-800 made in CGI in Salvation, Genisys or whatever that terminator model name was in Dark Fate... Also its the same thing as with Alien/Aliens....one Xenomorph that was very hard to kill for completely unprepared crew was much more terrifying than lot of them in Aliens when they actually had some weapons to fight back with.

There is another thing. In T1 and T2 physics were realistic. He was not superhuman. He was a machine that can be built in not so distant future, and he is so hard to be stopped. That's what scared people, that this thing may really walk out from a corner on a street some day, and kill them.

@@utoresa5193 it got a lot of damage but it kept going, in movies like genesis are pure bullshit because they kill it with a sniper rifle wich makes no sence, a terminator is tougher than a armored truck and even that a sniper can not penetrate thru, so it didn't make any sense that they killed it with a sniper rifle, even blow its head off with it, the T 1000 death is kinda debatable, if we talk about the acid of movies (the one that can even melt humans and other stuff) then it would actually kill it, but the T 1000 wouldn't actually kept walking towards sarah, he could have easely hide or run away to not get totally killed, they just made that to get rid of it, the movies that made terminators unbeatable towards the end were to T1 to T3 (T3 almost), after that they were all easy kills like if it was a game
@Chastity_Belt
@Chastity_Belt 4 года назад
@SugarDaddy1963 well, I don't think so about 0.50 cal. Yes, it's have very good armor piercing capabilities (well, for man-carried weapon), but it's not enough to make some damage just penetrating the metal. You know, you can't destroy a tank just making a little hole in it's body. You need also damage something inside. That guy was right, terminators in films after T2 became not machines of death, but rather some MMA restlers and super easy to kill. It's just stupid. In T1 and T2 terminators was unstoppable killing machines, they takes a hundreds of bullets, fire, physical damage and even explosions, but still "alive" and trying to complete their missions. In T3, T4, T5 and T6 terminators became a stupid dolls, that can be totally destroyed by baseball bat. They didn't scare even childrens.

Kyle Reese, officially the greatest hero in movie history! One man sent back in time naked into an age he was not familiar with, to fight off an unstoppable, relentless, nearly indestructible machine just to save a woman he has never seen but of whom he only had a photo. He left behind everyone and everything he has ever known in order to protect the woman he never knew even at the cost of his life. Meanwhile he became the father of the leader of the human resistance and he managed to protect the mother and made her strong enough so she could be the mother the resistance will need. The shot of Sarah with the Terminator's lifeless arm still on her shoulder after the big climactic moment is so good and important. Often in film when there's a climactic scene the characters seem 'aware' that this is the climax of the plot and that once it's over the threat has ended, but not here. She sits there, still shaking with terror, watching the arm intently for signs of life. not wanting to even touch it to move it off of her. She still doesn't quite believe it's dead, and with very good reason given what she's seen it survive. T1 was a horror film, and a fucking good one

One thing I really like here is that they didn't try to put in any cheap tension by having an "oh no, it's grabbed her foot... but she's managed to kick it away and escape, phew!" which just lowers the stakes because you've now established that it grabbing hold of you isn't an automatic death sentence. Instead they kept the focus on how narrow her lead on it was, to really drive home that one mistake is all it's going to take and if it manages to grab her, she's finished, which they'd made clear from the very first scene where the unarmed Terminator is able to just PUSH its hand through the punk's chest because the machine is JUST THAT DAMN STRONG. It makes the stakes so much higher than when you've got the super-strong robot/alien/supervillain/whatever that somehow fails to finish a fight against the supposedly ordinary human with one hit, or superhero/martial-arts movies where everyone's constantly getting punched so none of the blows have any real significance. This is more like a good lightsabre fight; any strike that lands will end the fight instantly, so you'd better be quick.

Films such as Short Circuit 2, Terminator 2, etc. made up a good bit of my childhood, as I was always fascinated with robots. But back to this. I remember as a kid, getting the Techno Punch Terminator action figure by Kenner, and thinking that it was so cool, always calling it the "Skeleton Robot". I was obsessed with how cool it looked, even having one of those cheap school folders that had the image of the Endoskeleton on it. As a teen, I had first seen Terminator 2, and I figured that it was like the Star Wars movies, in the sense that it continued with a story that had yet to be told (to me anyways), and of course with Arnold playing the role of the good guy, combined with the fact that he had a child co-star, I never thought anything of it, not knowing his original role in the first film. Then, about a couple of months after getting the VHS for T2, I remember going to a video store with mom and seeing the cassette for The Terminator out on display. So I asked the person running the store if it was the one that preceded T2 and they said "Yeah.". So of course, I begged mom to rent it for me, since I was still young at the time. And I can remember coming home with the tape, all excited to see just how that it would play out. Then, as soon as I popped the tape into the VCR, it became a totally different story. Seeing Arnold on-screen as the villain, and the overall dark nature of the movie when compared against Terminator 2 had me literally in fear and on the edge of my seat. I can remember seeing the scene where the Terminator removes his damaged eye and thinking to myself "Wow.", not knowing that this scene would eventually come up. I felt sheer terror watching this movie, from start to finish, as if I myself was in the role of Sarah Connor. And I recall being in complete shock and awe at the fact that the Endoskeleton rose from the fire of the truck, wondering if Sarah and Kyle would find a way to kill this frightening robot, and feeling relieved to know that once it was destroyed under the hydraulic press, that that was the end of it all. Good movie, loved the way that it played out, as it keeps it going from start to finish. Just when you think it can't get even more scary than it already had, the movie pulls out another surprise, left and right. Well done!

What made the original Terminator so different (and so successful) from its sequels was the horror aspect. Hollywood nowadays treats Terminator like it's an action movie franchise, which it isn't. I'd argue Terminator is a horror/terror film series with sci-fi elements. The whole factory chase scene in this movie is pure nightmare fuel, and it had me gripping on to the edge of my seat! T2 did have some terror in it, but not on the level of the original (but the change of pace was good for the sequel, it can't be a clone of the original). It's quite sad that none of the subsequent sequels ever returned to the horror aspect of the original. Terminator Salvation sort of tried to do that, and I applaud it for trying to do something different (it's the only film without time travel). But McG's vision of the future was such a departure from the first two movies fans didn't accept it very well.

same thing happened to Robocop. the original Robocop movie was... well.. Robocop, it's unique story. But subsequent sequels, and the cartoons (yuck), .. made Robocop like some sort of 'superhero'. As if being Robocop is cool or what... (it's actually a fate worse than death).
@RedSamurai84
@RedSamurai84 2 года назад
@@gendoruwo6322 Agreed. The original Robocop was about a man trapped inside a machine. The original had a lot of heart. It was also sort of a futuristic American Western "out for justice" story too. Robocop going after the thugs who put him in that suit. The sequel moved away from the man trapped inside a machine in favor of a more action approach. I will say, Robocop 2 does have one of the best opening sequences of any movie sequel. But the movie falls flat after that.

What all movies past T2 miss, is the realistic physics. In T1 terminator is a bit stronger than very strong humans, and obviously he is more durable for having a skeleton made of metall alloy and not calcium. He is destroyed by a press. In T2 it's the same. He is realistically strong, just as strong as a humanoid machine of this size could be. When he fights with T-1000 he moves to generate and accumulate pendulum to throw T-1000 around, same does the T-1000, (obviously otherwise they wouldn't have nough strenght), and when T-800's hand is jammed in an industrial cog, he doesn't have the streght to free it (although he tries at first), so he chooses to rip his hand off. T-800 is also vulnerable to excessive heat, as in T1 it is showed that fire clearly overheats his CPU and he emergency shuts down for a couple of minutes, untill the fire dies down. Now compare that to T3 when cyborg has a strengh of superman, TS where T-800 works even when he's so overheated his skeleton is glowing, or TG when he gets hit so hard a giant rail splint gets bended, yet not only it doesn't rip his head off, it doesn't even stun him.

At least some of that can be explained with same model being updated with better hardware and software. Like more powerful motors, sturdier materials, more memory capacity and all that. Cinematically easier explanation is available: must be bigger, louder, flashier and all that jazz. Comparing first two you can extrapolate that terminator after being blown to pieces had to reboot its systems just like in Terminator 2 as well. That is why it appeared dead and gave a good scare just being that relentless.

Yes. Was watching a T3 Clio of the bathroom fight scene. Arnie throws the TX around, and then out of nowhere, she does a single shove move. Arnie goes flying instantly like he got hit by a high speed train. Meanwhile, she doesn't even move. The much sudden force to throw a 900 lb terminator and her footing didn't even require bracing. It's total cartoon physics in the later movies.

It's not actually that easy to make a nuclear power source go off in an explosive manner. The initial explosion has to *precisely* shape the charge of the fissile material so that all of the radioactive material is concentrated into a small enough space so that a nuclear detonation can occur. You can't do that by simply smashing a bunch of radioactive material flat in a heavy press. This particular concept was also very cleverly done in a movie whose name I can't remember anymore, but which starred George clooney. To stop the nuclear bomb from detonating a nuclear explosion, all they did was pry off a few of the shape explosive charge plates surrounding the uranium or plutonium or whatever it was. The initial explosion still happened because the bomb couldn't be diffused, but the material wasn't blown up precisely the way it needed to be.
