I’m 59, led my congregation this week with my Shuriken and Helix. Old songs (in the Secret) new songs (yes and amen) and my own songs. Age has nothing to do with it. The team ranges in age from 16 to 65.

Our team ranges from 15- 70, we play all the new songs with a high standard of professionalism. I believe its powerful for the congregation to see the age difference and the way we all get along and worship with energy and big smiles . It let's the congregation no they are relevant no matter what your age.

62 here. Still at it and still working continuously to stay relevant and current with all of the latest music and technology. I was several told years ago in my early 50's at a previous church that I was "Getting too old for it now". When I asked my current Pastor recently how long I had left, he said.."I'll leave that decision to you. I think you will know when it's time. Not yet though!!" :-) In addition to staying current, I also agree about not letting yourself go physically. I eat right and mountain bike/weight train. Still the same 32" waist size I was in high school. Most people are shocked when they learn how old I am. I also am a strong advocate of training up our successors as sooner or later the time will definitely come to step out from front and center.

I'm 63. I have 7 guitars that I use as needed (acoustic, electric). I review and play the new stuff as it comes up. I see older as maturity and experience. You can't beat those. If your purpose is to please people, especially the younger crowd, you're there for the wrong reason. I think maturity helps to realize that. I still try to get better on my instrument. I've been playing in church since 1985.

I agree, trying to please the younger audience isn't the best mindset. However, I believe it's important to make the congregation feel comfortable and have familiar songs. I'm on other side of it where I was picking songs that were "too young" and the older members just couldn't feel get into it haha

Too OLD? Younger people in our church have yet to step up, serve and participate. At 73 I love all range of Christian music and hymns. Playing guitar, I am able to serve and worship our God by using the talents He has blessed me with. I am unashamed. I do hang out with younger people - my daughter and granddaughter both constantly bless with newer Christian music. And sometimes I can even bless them. I listen constantly. Maybe I can visit your church and participate with your worship. Age has nothing to do with it. My Christian heart is very young.

I'm 59 and I love to sing. In the past I used to belong to my church's worship team. Now I'm in a new church and the worship team is young kids and I feel to old to join. I've been sitting on a pew because I feel that I'm too old but I miss it so much. I'm serving in other areas but I feel so incomplete.

Happy to read a lot of positive comments on this subject. At 59, I still feel I have a lot to offer. Unfortunately, I have been on the receiving end of some age bias. It happened at my own church (at which still serve) when a new young pastor came in and told the MD to remove me from leading any worship, even though the MD was very comfortable with my abilities. I've also noticed a bit of hesitancy at a couple of other churches I've volunteered at, although in those cases I've been able to win them over. I don't necessarily blame younger people for their feelings. It's a natural emotion to initially be more comfortable with those who seem most similar to ourselves. But age bias is a very real issue, so I appreciate the discussion. It would be encouraging to see more of the influential artists and groups in CCM represent greater age diversity.

I'm 62, been playing keys for worship for over 40 years, and always stay "up" on all the new gear and applications. Can't even begin to say how many keyboards I've owned throughout the years. Currently using a Nord Stage 3 and a Korg Kronos for my hardware synths. And an Arturia KeyLab 88 controller, tapped in to a MBP loaded with Keyscape, Omnisphere, Mainstage, Sunday Sounds and BackStage Pass. In always paying attention to the growing trends of worship styles and songs, it is really important to grow in my knowledge of how to approach each song and each set as it compliments the rest of the worship team as we lead the congregation in worship. Skinny jeans passed me up a few decades ago, but God can and does still use me, and He still wants to use you, no matter how old you get. Stay relevant by staying current and staying humble!

At 62, I have thankfully been accepted by a much younger team...mostly 20s/30s, a few 40s/50s...but I am no doubt the oldest on the team. All of your points are spot on and certainly things that I try to apply. Assuming a voluntary role as a mentor (not forcing, but sharing experience) has also proven effective for my acceptance. Love your tips, and your commitment to helping even an old dude like me remain relevant. (I also really dig your Helix patches) Blessings, Jimmy

I so appreciate this (being 53 and a non-traditional college student) finally going for my music degree at a school that I am THE oldest voice student and frankly wondering if this is really where God wants me... Watching this I realize that whether or not this is, right now, I can not only impart wisdom from being out there in the world as a musician and worship leader (without a degree) but I have a lot to learn from my much younger fellow students. My husband always tells me I’m not too old to continue on this road - and I’m not yet convinced - but I keep traveling it anyway :-) Thanks for another great talk y’all!

I am 59 and I have been leading worship in some form of Bible study or church service for 40 years. I think that it’s actually kind of an advantage, but at this time I’m trying to bring as many younger folks into worship ministry as possible, as to eventually replace myself. In my opinion it is an awesome testimony that believers of varying age groups don’t really have age separating them, (that feels more like a worldly demographic, political party, etc.) but A love for Christ uniting them. Having said that, I was in a conversation with a friend of mine who looks years younger than I do, but is actually 68. He is a gifted musician and worship leader, and he told me (very matter-of-factly) that in his church there was really no place for him, because it was more of a “young man’s game” These days. That was a little disconcerting to hear. Thanks for tackling the subject!

A playlist? Can’t I have someone dub me a mixtape? Or at least burn a compilation CD? And why do we have to get the “dad rock” label? LOL Also, the bit about tone... I’ve been playing electric guitar in a worship context for over 20 years (I’m 41) and I feel like I’m just now getting to the tone I’ve been after for that whole time. What has helped me the most is younger musicians (and a few older ones) on RU-vid. Great tone hasn’t changed that much but gear has changed a ton. I’m still a bit of an analog signal/tube amp snob but I can appreciate modelers, IRs, etc. now that they are more accurate to what they are emulating. Anyway, all that to say that tones have evolved a bit but the fundamentals of tone have been the same from Stu G to Jeffrey Kunde. I agree that staying relevant is critical, but within some margin of taste, I feel like great tone for specific styles of music (such as worship) has been pretty constant. The bigger question to me is what defines “worship style?” We tend to think of it all as fitting within the narrow spectrum of 90s Vineyard to Passion to Hillsong to Bethel - all pretty much in the same vein. Newer music has put the guitar in the background though, like Hillsong Young & Free. What happens when your instrument becomes irrelevant? Love what you guys do, thank you.
@user-gz7vv6uu7b
@user-gz7vv6uu7b 4 года назад
No instrument ever becomes irrelevant. Our roles change inside the songs, but we are still there. Today for example for electric guitar it's less power chords, even the U2-style delay orgies are getting less common. But in comes some cool low-effect funky single-note guitar parts that give live to a song. So never worry about your instrument becoming irrelevant. Just adapt to what new songs demand.

I'm 54, grew up in 80's rock bands. Moved to Nashville in '94, did a 10 yr Odyssey with the best players in the world. Came home in 2004 & did a 1-man-band gig for 10 yrs. I visited a contemporary worship service in 2014 & decided to join the worship team. Two churches later it's 2019 and I'm leading a contemporary worship service, the church has doubled in size, & my team is killing it every Sunday, & my pastor is very happy. Listen very carefully..... I'm exactly where I'm supposed be, doing what I've been called to do. My age is not a factor here because my experience is what is needed right here right now.

I enjoy the idea that synth is some newfangled thing. I've been throwing synth stuff in for years thinking it was an 80s throwback. Accidentally ahead of the curve. Ecc 1:9-10: What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

I slightly disagree with the comment on tone. I’m hearing a lot of “80’s” tones in modern music. Everyone has hated the chorus peddle for the last 20 years and now you hear it everywhere . In fact, I believe that you included one in one of your latest helix patches.
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 4 года назад
It's true - the 80's stuff is kinda coming back, but the guitar tones are different than they were back then. I'd say definitely more 'inspired by' rather than just a copy. But more and more guitar is taking a back seat to synths and other types of instrumentation.

Great thoughts here. I do question use of the word "relevant.". Relevant to young people? (Suggesting being relevant to older folks is not important). I'm all for bringing in the young but I think we don't want to forget that today's 60 year olds may be active (tithing) members for another 25 or 30 years.

Yeah, that kind of bothered me, too. I think the best way to look at it is not "trying to keep up with those cool kids" (That turns you into one of those cringey dads-or moms-who act like overgrown teenagers.), but in realizing that by playing music, you are not just performing, but you are taking part in an artistic conversation-sometimes agreeing and sometimes disagreeing with other voices. You need to learn to hear that conversation and to "speak" in a musical language that brings your experience, your wisdom, and your Christian viewpoint into that conversation.

You guys are funny fresh and transparent. I’ve led worship for over 35 years on church staffs or just leading conferences... I really enjoy your insight into worship but I wanted to say one thing that seems to be a given that you don’t bring up a lot. I’m 55 and still hang with college students but I’ve never worried about being relevant the way you described here. I love the new music that’s out and I love the old but my main concern has not been about being relevant. It was more about the songs all pointing to Jesus and not being so vague just because they sound cool. I hope you get what I’m saying. To me it’s kinda like Paul warning to not be so persuaded just because he was a good speaker but be persuaded by Jesus. As you know there can be a fine line between worship of the creator vs. worship of us or ego. 16 years ago I left the ministry because the “stage” overwhelmed me. You know...the pride before destruction thing. I lost everything ...,my family, job, but most importantly I lost my relationship with God. The band thing soared so I thought I would take off with the lead singer and do our own thing. TMI but I say that because I was trying to be relevant, cool, I loved that people loved what we were doing. More and more people came and I forgot why I was doing what I was there to do. All this to say. Be prepared but trust that Christ will make you relevant to all who hear...the 15 year old and the 70 year old. Thanks for all you guys put out....

Speaking of tone, how can I tell a newer guitarist that his 3 overdrive pedals don't sound too great for a church setting when turned on at the same time? :p He takes constructive criticism somewhat bitterly so it can be hard to try and help him. He's getting a lot better with his technical ability, but he doesn't feel the need to experiment with his gear.

With all due respect, we have a big problem with relevance. We’re trying to be relevant to a very narrow Christian subculture instead of being relevant to the culture we live in. The only kids I know who listen to bands are Christian kids. Most of the activity I see kids that are into rap, pop, and R&B. I have pretty much not seen any guitars in pop music in the last five years that weren’t sampled. The world has completely changed around us, and we have created a tiny subcultural niche that feels relevant because were in church all the time. I’m thankful for the last three years of being out of ministry. It’s giving me a lot of perspective. For my musical pursuit now, I produce hip hop. I think hip-hop-based pop is the future of worship, and in a few years, all of the guitars and live instruments are going to go away, because in most churches they don’t have people to play them anyway, you’re going to have a really good keyboard player triggering stems, and a few singers. I think if you want to be relevant in a way that reaches people, you have to be willing to leave dead Christian subculture behind. I think the church needs rappers, singers, and producers and beatmakers to lead the way.

The funny thing is how little the church worship culture cares about older songs and worship fathers/ mothers. So, the irony of “being too old”, is that an underlying issue is actually that we don’t develop culture or appreciate our past. It’s funny how in a secular world, Tom Petty and Dylan will always be relevant but past Keith Green, not many know any pioneers of worship and how crucial their work is and was. If we are to move forward and be led by the Spirit, we ought to know where we came from.

being "relevant" is not important, whatever relevant means in a ministry context....doing what the word says and having correct doctrine is the most important

What we mean by 'relevant' is the awareness of and the ability to relate to modern culture when interacting with people. We don't mean being conformed by it or necessarily looking like it. Actually I think 'relevancy' is pretty well summed up in 1 Corinthians 9:20-22. It's extremely important in a ministry context, which is why the Apostle Paul spent so much time writing about it and modeling it in his ministry.
