Another option is to get a goat. My goat has trouble holding the trimmer, so I strapped it to his back. Takes about a week but eventually everything is nice and low.
I learned this when I was 13 or 14 and have had a successful mowing business for the last 25 yrs. With many of the same customers I had then and some of them very wealthy and all love our work I have one huge yard I have charged the same 40 dollars for for 25 yrs. It was the 3rd yard I ever started mowing. The lady and her husband who recently passed have been so wonderful.
Well, there must be something wrong with mine, because it doesn't spin clockwise OR counterclockwise! In fact, it doesn't even spin parallel to the ground! Mine always spins vertically, perpendicular to the ground! If only there was a way to change it's direction of spin. But I sure can't think of a solution...... 😁
How about those metal pesticide flags, sometimes people forget to pick one up... a friend of mine fired one a couple inches into his leg with a whacker.
I’m that weird neighbor out here with no idea what I’m doing…and laughing hysterically at myself the entire time because I KNOW I have no idea what I’m doing. So thank you for this!! Makes sense…
If you pitch the trimmer slightly to the right, it will throw most of the clippings away from you. It's how I'm able to string trim 60+ yards a week in shorts...

Thanks! I honestly never gave it a thought, but next time I use my trimmer I’ll try it. I hope it works because the mulch looks like crap with the clippings in it.
That's a game changer tip! I have been doing that for years and it keeps things looking great and you don't have to figure out how to get the grass off of the mulch.
@@bloodvue no, you use the trimmer so it doesn’t throw debris in the bed. It either goes left or right, not backwards or forwards. You should be using it so the debris is going back into the yard.
@@bloodvue better you getting dirty than trashing the bed and then messing it up more by blowing all the mulch out or something else.. plus using a guard is for amateurs, no guard no clogging.. plus it’s better thrown in the lawn to mow over and eliminate clippings that are too long and reduces risk of rocks/debris flying at the house… if you did any serious work or took a bit of pride in it, this advice would be gold to you and make your job far easier.. it’s about working smarter not harder, always
I was on a mowing crew at one time for a few years. I learned how to use it so I wasn't wearing grass all over me. Tilt the head at the right angle and by walking in the right direction you keep the clippings going where you want them
There’s advantages to going both directions. Hit it on the left side when edging, both when you’re clearing large swaths, right side when buzzing to the ground or poison Ivy or cutting the edge vertically
Yep, And string trim before mowing. The mower will mulch or bag it all leaving it look professional. If you side discharge mow from the middle to throw clippings to middle so it still looks tidy.
This reminds me how cars in the 40s had manuals that taught you how to change parts and gap your plugs. And so On. Now it tells you not to drink the coolent
To be fair most older american cars were cooled with straight water, hence the often seen "free water and air" signs at a lot of gas stations. I think they introduced that warning once antifreeze became more common, since it was sweet smelling. Now most warnings ive seen are to keep it away from children and pets.
Thank you that helps me. Although in the middle of the yard I don't think it matters, this really makes a difference around the edging and near the fences. So thank you again
Trimming the correct way will also prevent the string from picking up rocks and throwing them through the windows or your house or car. If you don’t like your neighbors, then by all means go the opposite way. Just make sure they aren’t home, and that you have an exit plan.
I would rather a rock hit a house then hit me. Its basic safety. Its also why people who do it the way he says to end up wearing their lawn when they are done.
I have no idea why this RU-vid short got recommended to me if this doesn’t apply to me at all but it was useful info that I never knew I would maybe need. Thank you.
Lawn care professional here. This clip is not correct. Trimmer should also be held at a downward angle respective to the direction its moving, about 30 to 45 degrees. This will keep your trimmed grass healthy with angled cuts instead of "head chopping" cuts.
Most people do not give a single fuck about the health of their grass, we don't even care about our own. Manicuring a patch of grass is the biggest scam in America since the bible.
@@Phurzt I read something in my John Deere mower manual that suggested leveling the deck left to right but leaving a bit of an angle between front to back, so I fixed that on my deck, and also have my push mower set where the front is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch higher than the back. So far I don't seem to have the brown tips issue as bad this year. I do have issues with brown patch though. My boss suggested spreading 0-20-20 in the yard rather than what I had been using which was either 13-13-13 or very light applications of spilled urea from a local ag strip. Any fertilizer suggestions other than what I was told? Also, buttonweed is taking my yard over and it seems like nothing I've tried will kill it. Dicamba? It comes back. Dicamba mixed with metsulfuron? Comes back. Any idea what I can use to kill that mess?
I had to learn this at 15 years old working for a pissed off guatemalan guy who didmt understand english good enough to tell me how to do it right... He just said "make it look beautiful"
Belting tip I’ve used these for a while and assumed everyone just uses it however they want to but with your reasoning behind the clock wise and anti clockwise makes things much easier when it comes to clearing grass from unwanted spots
Trained countless people how to do this for the last 15 years. Don't forget USE YOUR LEGS. I always get a good laugh when I see people running a fence line while wiggling the trimmer back and forth. Work smarter not harder.
I always had this problem in the front yard but couldn't figure it out. The other day I went the other direction on accident and it actually worked. Didn't know exactly what I did different but now I know. Thanks
When i landscaped for a few years doing lawn maintenance for a chunk of that, knowing the spin direction of the curved shaft versus the straight shaft made the difference. Especially for determining how the clippings throw. Means the world in efficiency
Haha, I was thinking how this was bull and clickbait and then right there this was a real and very nice tip. I haven't had the inconvenience of .. mulch?, but this certainly will change how I trim from now on. The small things makes the difference. Thanks for the tip. 😊
Great video man, I used to use them wrong before I started my own company or just work in lawn care in general but yeah it’s a great thing to know especially when you do in 20 lawns a day it saves you on time saves you on customer complaints all types of stuff good video!!
I work as a groundskeeper and a weedeater is one of my most commonly used tools. In your examples of wrong/right you tilted the weedeater differently, if you were to keep the tilt the same as the right way of your examples but went the other way it would still shoot towards you vs your mulch. Also it’s not necessarily wrong or right because when I’m working in large areas where I don’t have to worry about mulch or windows I’ll tilt the opposite way so the pebbles and other debris shoot away from me. I’ve had many rocks hit my shins and it’s not a fun feeling. Great video though!
That's just for around flower beds And around the house. I guess you don't weedeat farm fence lines and that kinda stuff like I do. Soild point though.
Being a Makita user and advocate for years I recently started buying and using specific Hart power tools from Walmart and I’m impressed. For the price it’s a no brainer. Like the inflator, air compressor, backpack sprayer, and 2 gallon hand held shop vac, these all perform phenomenally and each item was like 60-$80 some came with 2 amp or 4 amp batteries some came bare tool. But I supplemented the tools with a two 4 amp plus extra 2 amp plus quick charger for $99. I bought all of these on sale from Spring to Summer 2023. Watch for the deals and these tool purchases become a no brainer. I still use my Makita drills, drivers, torque wrench, power ratchet, angle grinder, LED lanterns, recip saw, multi tool, string trimmer, leaf blower these are all the best but they come with a premium. For lawn mower I use the 40v Ryobi platform and the 40v hedge trimmer.
@@goinhot9133 This video treats this as an absolute. It should be situational. There are times when it is best to do the opposite of what's shown here.
I figured this out about two years ago. It blew my mind. I felt like a genius, but apparently it also said it in the owners manual. If only I knew how to read
This sounds and see it silly and lame but its IMPRESIVE!! how many ppl dont know or understand how Trrimers cut the grass... keep going whit the hard Work buddy, God bless you!
My head is about to rotate over here to a video that doesn’t low key complain about my yard work. But I will try this next time I use my trimmer. So thank you and fair well.
You are so correct! I bought wrong direction unit. It spins counter clockwise. Im a right trigger guy, and have to basically walk backwards to keep grass on lawn. Be aware before you buy, like this gentleman explains. Mine's a damn Honda! So it's probably going to out live me, LoL
Someone finally explained it, the amount of times I’ve watched people strim the grass onto the road, it’s not a big deal but it saves blowing afterwards
Straight shafts spin counter clockwise and curved shafts spin clockwise. You can cut in any direction or angle you want to depending on where you want to direct the clippings, the direction you are facing or walking in respect to where you're trimming and so on. However in this case with the straight shaft he's using, sweeping from right to left is most effective.
An additional advantage, of your correct method, when you are cutting up to a vertical surface, wall/fence/etc, the cut material is not thrown onto the surface of where you have just cut. Right to left (for a counterclockwise head) leaves a much tidier edge that doesn't need as much, if any, later raking or blowing. But, left to right along that fence, you are throwing most of the cut material on top of your already cut areas.
Works best if you remove the guard and hold it upside down for edge work. I'm sure there are many who dont want to remove the guard, which is totally cool.
