Hannah, you not only inspired me to do a so-far-successful No-Buy Year (6 full months and counting!), but I also donated half my wardrobe and have been "shopping" in my closet as I'm "shopping" my existing makeup collection to put together unique, stylish lewks. I went on vacation in late July and had already agreed to myself (haha) prior to starting my no buy that I could buy whatever I wanted while overseas…and boy, did I ever. The problem is, it was so difficult to get back into the mindset I had prior to vacation, and I backslid, and hard! I went a full 7.5 months being very strict, and now I find myself back in my 2022 mindset. I’m struggling to get back in the zone, to be honest. It really is so hard, once you allow yourself (again, prior to even starting) access to old habits.
I simply wanted to reinforce your advice not to limit oneself to a particular section of the thrift store, whether they be delineated by size or by gender. I have found many of my favourite button-downs in the men's section and feel so much more myself in a "men's cut" than in the button-downs I tend to find in the ladies' section. Truly a tip not to be overlooked!
@@janicevin4207 Yes! And a lot of higher quality women's basics end up in the men's section too I think because they don't scream feminine vibes; like rigid unadorned jeans or boxy Ts in darker colors.

Thanks to HLP I no longer follow any fashion channels that only show one body type. I even had a very popular channel recently tell me that they were "tied" to showing one body type because of the subjects they covered. Uh... Sure, Jan.

I recently sewed my own pair of cargo pants because I just could not find a decent pair for the fit I wanted in a quality twill. As a person who sews mainly dresses and blouses the cargo pant was quite an achievement!
I really appreciate your take on how to 'handle' trends and participate but in a safer and more climate friendly way! I especially like the different photos you use showing all different types of bodies. That means a lot to me, as it shows with my body I can do these trends.
Kind of relevant side note: for my wedding, one of the favors I wanted to get my bridal party were dark green flannel shirts. they were super easy to get secondhand for cheap on depop, and it was so fun to see everyone matching while not really matching :)
I just want to say how much I appreciate the inspiration pics you include in your fashion videos! WhenI see the vouge pics I always think MEH, this is not for me, but when I see the pics you choose I always want to try the thing! Not only because they are always more interesting than the runway stuff, but also because the diversity of the people in them makes them seem more attainable for me as just a regular person. I live in a place where most everyone looks the same 😑 and it can be suffocating to children’s worldview. I digress. I see so many options at the thrift shops for these current trends. Sometimes, they’re better! I have actually found a longer lingerie dress that looked really good for a daytime wear… and tops too. I look out more for them now and actually did find a navy silk top in pristine condition for $3!!! I think lingerie could get some actual use, incorporating it into daily wear. And if you’re not too comfortable, wearing it alone, put it under a blazer or cardigan.

I've literally been waiting 15 years for baggy cargo pants to come back in an accessible way. I *will* be buying multiple pairs for the nostalgia and comfort, but I also do really need to replace some pants this year, too

So much inspiration! I highly recommend tucking one side of a skirt or dress (or use a hair tie on the underside), for a temporary asymmetrical hem. I picked up some Vans thrifting yesterday and can’t wait to play with the grunge and denim trends w them!
Also, I have found amazing slip skirts to wear on their own! Searching through men’s clothing, and all sizes is definitely a must went thrift shopping. Many of our beautiful vintage pieces out there run incredibly small for their size labels/just a different sizing system to now that could potentially be missed looking, and only one size. Some thing I thought of for the drape/goddess effect is to take a large silk scarf or any kind of scarf really, and to tie it Crossbody over a solid print dress. I have found this to be a nice way to play up a plain dress and wear it different ways as well as add a vibe for this trend!
I have a long disgruntled relationship with summer dressing so I’m definitely challenged with feeling like I look good during the summer months. However, I did recently cut some old jeans that I loved into shorts that are in a perfect length for me, and that’s been a good start as the weather in my city is warming up.
Watching this having just given a classic red flannel to my brother, which I thrifted for my partner years ago, then they grew out of it and I wore it oversized for years, but then I wasn’t wearing it much so I gave it to my brother who loves it and it fits him perfectly. So this thing has gone across 3 different gender presentations, body shapes, and dress styles over the years and been loved the whole time. Just goes to show that flannels are always in fashion!
*Flannel* . I'm 56, love a flannel shirt. I'm particular with my color palette and love to pair them with a graphic tee that has similar colors. This is a clothing piece I will reach for year round, a great layering piece for cool Summer evenings. *Denim Shirts* . Another "MUST HAVE" staple for me.
I truly found this channel just in time. I need to spend the summer wearing the bazillion clothes I already have to figure out what I actually like. I was on an unsatisfactory buying spree and still had nothing to wear. I went all of June on a no-buy (that doesn't sound like a lot, but it's HARD) and I can already feel myself becoming more thoughtful. I also figured out my "color season" recently, and I am a soft autumn, which is not at all the color palette I gravitate toward. I don't dislike the soft autumn color palette, I just haven't played with it. Phew.
Same here. I don't even look that impressive fashion-wise much of the time but have gone through an overbuying spree for some months. I got rid of some things and determined to not buy or get rid of stuff for a while until I learn all the combos and creative ways I can work with what I have (or just repeat a basic stand-by outfit I feel good in and move on).

Awesome video though Vogue clearly has a different kind of summer than we have down here in the south 😢 Another cheap trick for asymmetry in a skirt is to pin it up in a spot of two with safety pins. I usually do this with the pin on the inside.
Your comment about making cargo pants makes me want to make a pair with all different fabric patch pockets. I may need to do that... combo trends! -- pretty girly bra with hard wearing cargo pants and a thin flannel? oooh that'd be cool.

Although I truthfully have very little interest in summer trends, I’ve rocked cut offs, band tees/t-shirts and Vans or Converse for probably the last 15 years or so, I needed an HLP video! I hear the little intro chimes and Hannah’s sweet “Hi y’all” and I exhale without realizing I was holding my breath. 🖤 The vibes here are just so good!
I needed this. Even though I’m trying to get pregnant, I’m compulsively buying clothes! All the time! And I WORK FROM HOME! I’ve just been super depressed and grieving the loss of a loved one. Rayon jersey would be a lovely fabric for creating those fluid parts of the garment. If you ever feel inclined to make a video in which you demonstrate a DIY fashion idea, I’d be very interested. 😃
This video has been yet another reminder that I am hitting the age where I am seeing trends come back around from my own life time. First it was the uggs and yoga pants (“flared leggings”) of the late 2000s when I was 11-13ish and trends first started mattering in my life, to the grunge flannel of the early 2010s and my high school years. It has been a really interesting time to reflect on!

I love this fashion content - fashion is something I'm so interested in but I'm often intimidated by the perceived "entry fee" to so many trends (i.e. a new purchase) that I often ignore them entirely. Very helpful to cut through to more widely applicable trends that can often already be put together. I think I'll be giving extra consideration to the denim on denim trend myself!
Flannel shirts are in? So many Canadians are suddenly trendy 😝 some friends of mine were “horrified” me and my husband didn’t own a flannel so they gifted us one each. I am planning to embroider mine but until then I will try to wear it tied like you showed here as it might make it feel more like me. 😅
Hannah, would you ever do a video on the interminable search for the “perfect thing”? For example, I need a pair of leather sandals for summer and I’ve needed them for two summers at this point. I know what I want - black, low block heel, sling back, slightly strappy, able to be reheeled - but I can’t find it after searching high and low and I don’t want to buy something imperfect just to fill that hole in my wardrobe. How do you find the thing when you can’t find the thing?
@@janicevin4207 yes, this is what I've been doing, but the point of my comment is that when you're a discerning shopper it's often hard to find something that * actually * checks all the boxes. There are lots of sandals that LOOK like the thing I want but don't fit my foot / have bad reviews / aren't able to be re-heeled easily / etc., etc. I think Hannah is the perfect person to think about this because she's SO skilled at seeing through marketing to what something actually is (for example, in her New Makeup Hot Takes when she talks about talking herself out of buying something because it doesn't check all her boxes). However when you're very good at seeing why something won't work, and the market is flooded with cheap stuff (especially clothes / shoes), it's easy to talk yourself out of every purchase. Or it is for me.
Yes, the way something moves can be a selling point for me.. I fondly remember an old dance teacher who used to go on about the impact of fabric movement and has stayed with me ❤🙂

I remember the lingerie as streetwear trend from the 90's and loved it! It was a bit anti-fashion and urban bohemian. One of my favourite pieces to wear at the time was a nylon cami with lace that had been tie-died magenta and off white. I found it for a very small price at a local market. I probably still have it somewhere. It doesn't have to look slutty especially when worn under an oversized jacket. The lace makes it fancy so if you wear a lace cami with plain pants or maxi skirt and then a slightly fancy coat or jacket, then it looks like it belongs. It's a fun feminine look and makes for a lovely décolletage.
Although not thrifting you raise a great point in looking at the menswear section. I bought a cotton quarter zip yesterday for $30 less than in the women's department & it really was cut universally.

Thank you for this wonderful video, Hannah! Sometimes you don't need new clothes, just new inspiration. I was on a no-buy this year and the change in brain chemistry made me feel a bit blah about my extensive existing wardrobe. But then I fell in love with the work of designer Haider Ackermann (check him out if the "dramatic goddess draping" portion of this video was your favorite) and the way he puts things together is making me look at my wardrobe in a whole new way. I feel like I've gained 100+ amazing clothes overnight and it is HEADY. Even though I'm tempted to shop for novel things because of the revived fashion lust, I'm going to be strict and shop my existing wardrobe. I think for many of us, we already have so, so many clothes, so videos like this which focus on creative DYI and repurposing, with thrifting considered over buying new, are a godsend. I LOVE the "Canadian Tuxedo" look (blue denim jacket with blue denim jeans). I have four denim jackets I keep in rotation because they're both loaded with pins and brooches. Everything from Minnie Mouse in leather grungewear to the Rolling Stones' mouth and tongue logo. And ladylike pearls; beautifully made costume jewelry bees and butterflies, some designed by Joan Rivers and Jay Strongwater. And authentic vintage rhinestone brooches in mixed colors. And Christmas trees. And fuzzy poodles. And enameled pins from all the places I've been on roadtrips. And...
I have some slinky fabric kicking around that I was planning to make into a bias-cut skirt… this video (especially the goddess vibes part) might give me the kick to give it a go!

Sort of like, how to get in that headspace of "this is cutting edge" but choose something completely unsanctioned that you love and imagine it in magazine spreads that then inspire you? ;)

Princess Diana was a trendsetter in fashion, and one of her signature looks was wearing nightgowns or slip dresses for a night out. She always looked so elegant and effortless, and I can see why that style has remained popular even today. It's incredible how much she influenced the fashion world and beyond.
I have always bought from thrift stores but now most of my buys are from thrift stores. The quality of fabric and construction is often much better than what is currently being produced and sold. There is a wider variety of cuts and styles and colours.
Cargo pants were a thing in the 2000s. In my early 20s I had a light beige or off-white pair that I wore right out, and then in my later 20s and early 30s I had a pair of mid-brown cargo capris in a lighter fabric that I also wore right out. I don't know if it's a trend I'll participate in now, in my early 40s, but I don't a strong reaction to them coming back around like I did when acid wash jeans briefly came back a few years ago.
I love thift stores for clothes. The thing i like the most is that the sections are have such range. Meaning... that i can find business pants and casual pants on one row. I just love seeing all the pants all at once. I don't why, but this layout is so much more digestible for me than a large department store.

Military surplus stores are a great source for thrifting cargo pants. I have a pair issued in the Vietnam war that are still going strong....Lots of people remember flannel's moment in the 90s but it was huge in the early 80s as well, which is where it imprinted on me. In my mind, flannel has been continuously in style since then. And truthfully it has been frequently since World War Two, when boxy "masculine" flannel shirts were a huge style for women. They were called 49ers jackets and were usually made of wool rather than cotton flannel.
Now that I am in my 50s I want to dress like either Meg Ryan or Judi Dench. 😂 Stylish, but loose and flowy. I've already been finding some nice linen pieces going towards that goal.
