If you have KC12 in your top5 then I’ll probably have to check out the rest of your list. I’ve had ER it’s not bad but KC12 is my all time favorite. WT101 will probably always be in my top5. I almost bought a bottle of RareBreed but decided to try longbranch instead bc I was bringing it to share with the in-laws(lower proof). It was a win-win bc longbranch is legit.
1. Go to: Rare Breed 2. Mixer: Old Granddad BiB (Buffalo Trace close second) 3. Friday Night: Booker’s 4. Impress Guests: Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year 5. Special Occasion: Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill
1. Go To Pour: Woodford Reserve Double Oak 2. Mixer: Wild Turkey 101 3. Friday Pour: Old Forester Single Barrel 4. Impress Guests: Remus Gatsby Reserve 5. Special Occasion: George T. Stagg
1. Daily: Four Roses Single Barrel or Rare Breed 2. Inexpensive Mixer: Old Forester Signature (100) 3. Friday Pour: Russel's Single Barrel or rare breed 4. Impress Guests: Weller Full Proof Store Pick 5. Special Occasion: Stagg (Jr.) or Russel's 13
@@1970Cuda440 Well, it's cheaper than Rare Breed (about $40 in my market), and always solid and always available. Nice proof point, and it was one of my "gateway" bourbons that pulled me over from being a scotch drinker (along with Eagle Rare and Blanton's, back when B;anton's was $50 and on every shelf (and, IMHO, better than it is now)).
I'll start by saying that I'm cheap, sooooo... Old Forester 86, Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark 46, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Be nice to see your 5 fav's for Scotch, Irish and Rye too!
For many years Elijah Craig 12yr old was my go to. When they took away the age statement and the quality suffered, Wild Turkey 101 became one of its replacements as a budget friendly Whiskey. These days, the Costco Kirkland brands are all really good budget friendly spirits.
Love this idea. My 5: Go to pour: OF 1920 or WT101 (haven’t tried rare breed yet) Mixer: Buffalo trace (not hard to find in my area for msrp) Friday pour: 4R SBS Impress guests: Eagle Rare 10 Special Occasion: Stagg 23B
I am an every day drinker. Spot on with the Rare Breed. One of my favorites. I tend to drink regularly out of my collection. Probably have 40 bottles opened that I drink from every day. My mixer is the handle of Ancient Age 10 star or OF 100 proof. My Friday night is EC barrel proof (currently C922) and OF 1920. My friends are very impressionable so they get the BT, ER or Ancient Age poured into an empty Blanton’s bottle. They are clueless. My special occasion is Weller 107 and Calumet 10 yr. Probably hardly a special occasion for most but that’s how I roll.
My Grandfather was a master distiller back in the 30’s,40’s,50’s. Bourbon mainly. He told my dad to never drink a bourbon under 100 proof. And that knocks out a lot.
GoTo: OF 1920 or 1910 Mixer: Makers Mark Weekend: EC Barrel Proof Impress: Blantons (guest will be impressed by the name, and taste) Special Occasion: Russells Reserve Private Barrel Selection
Very similar tastes, with the exception that I keep below $100 ... 1. JD Single Barrel (store picks are ubiquitous, so usually its a store pick), 2. Evan Williams BIB, 3. ECBP (love these, I never miss one), 4. Sagamore Double Oak, 5. Knob Creek 12 (my friends don't know there's anything more expensive anyway 😁)
If I must 👊👊👊 1. 1920- for any and all occasions -special or not 2. 4 Roses single barrel- close 2nd for me 3. Rare breed 4. Woodford double oaked 5. 101 or Remus if we are making a ton of mixers…. Take care out there guys !!
1. Rare Breed 2. EC 3. Bookers (not mentioned enough. It’s one of if not the most unique bourbon on the market) 4. Stagg Jr 5. George T Stagg ( I don’t have this bottle. I wish I did). Right now I’m stuck at 1-4.
I'm pretty new to whiskey but currently: GO-2: OGD 114 Cheap Mixer: OF 100 Friday Pour: Willett Rye Impress Guests: Sagamore Double Oak Special Occasion: JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye (Or Redbreast 21 if I can go outside US)
Great list! RR 10 year, Larceny barrel proof, Heaven Hill BiB, Willett Rye and Frank August Small Batch are some of our “go to” pours currently. Thanks for sharing!
My go-to is Old Grand-Dad 100 proof. Cheap mixer is Old Grand-Dad 80 proof. Friday pour same as go-to. Impress guests is Smokewagon. Special Occasion either Hardins Creek Frankfort or Makers Mark Cellar Aged unicorns.
Been into Whiskey/Bourbon for less than a year my 5 Bottles would be 1. Go to pour - Knob Creek 12 year 2. Mixer - Bulleit Rye 3. Friday Night Pour - Penelope Toasted 4. Impress Guests - Blantons 5. Special Occasion - Weller Full Proof
1. Wild Turkey Rare Breed 2. Early Times Bottled in Bond 3. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof 4. Found North 006/007 5. Michter's 10 Rye / JM Cigar Blend That being said the bottles at #4 and #5 are equally enjoyable. I simply put Found North at #4 because I have more FN on the shelf than M10R or JMCB.
It's fitting since I ordered my first bottle of it during the live stream you had with Nick. The enthusiasm all three of you shared was infectious ! @@stuffandwhiskey
-Go to Pour: Green River or Jim Beam Devils Cut -Cheap Mixer:Lairds Apple Whiskey -Friday Pour: Penelope Rose Cask Finish Bourbon -Impress Guests: EH Taylor Small Batch -Special Occasion: Hennessey X.O.
Newer bourbon drinker here (only been drinking it for about a year) and higher proof for my pallet blocks the flavors and has a tendency to have the dry erase marker taste that I can’t get past. My list for flavors and smoothness are Go-To Pour: Hirsch (this was introduced to me and very much reminds me of a poor mans Blantons - smooth, caramel and warm), Cheap Mixer: Makers Mark or Buffalo Trace (I can find either of these ANYWHERE and usually at sub $30/bottle), Friday Pour: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (This was the first Bourbon I ever tried and hits my pallet perfectly!) Impress Guests: Michters Small Batch (Most of my guests have never tried bourbon neat or on the rocks and Michters is straight up apple pie in a bottle!), Special Occasion: Blantons (So Smooth, So Rich, it’s like a warm hug for your throat. Issue is I can’t find it ANYWHERE and it’s crazy expensive, plus you get the fun horse in stride for your collection!)
Here in MN Buffalo Trace is hard to find. One of the local stores had some today but it's hidden in the office. Cost me $55.43 out the door. They jokingly said they would put it in a bag for me so I don't get mugged on the way to my vehicle.
1. Go to: Johnny Drum 2. Mixer: Elijah Craig 3.Friday Night: Stagg Jr. or Tom's Foolery 4.Impress Guests: Lock Stock and Barrel 13 Rye 5. Special Occasion: Parker's Heritage
For me: 1) Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch Bourbon for daily driver, 2) Four Roses for Mixers as well as for Baking and BBQ, 3) Woodford Reserve Double Oaked for introducing to friends (I have no Bourbon friends to impress), 4) Wild Turkey Rare Breed for Friday nights 5) Old Wild Turkey 101 8yr for special occasions (I still have 3 bottles of this one.)
Go to: regular Elijah Craig or Jack Daniel’s triple mash Mixer: benchmark full proof or WT 101 Friday night: Still Austin cask strength or rare breed Impress guest: Elijah Craig 18 Special occasion: sorry but I go for scotch on special occasions so I would probably choose a 30 year old glenfarclas that I’ve had for years and still haven’t opened lol
Great list! I currently have four of those five in my house. Strangely enough, the one I don’t have (and have never tried) is JTS Brown. I like the dose of common sense you guys bring to whiskey. I’ve got more than my share of spendy bottles. Too often, they don’t live up to the hype. You have brought me back down to earth.
Five is tough but I'm going to make it based on what I can regularly get in Vegas. 1. Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered 2. Pikesville (yes, not a bourbon) 3. Knob Creek 9 (affordable and great to drink or mix) 4. Elijah Craig BP - this is usually not hard to find 5. Ezra Brooks 7 - not always so eazy to find but more common than not, I love this one. **Honorable mention that I just found is the Traverse City Straight Wheat Barrel Proof. This satisfies my Weller OWA cravings. I just found this the other day and if it's a regularly stocked item, it will bump out something on my list.
Ready or not. Here it is. Go-to pour - Tin Cup Whiskey Cheap Mixer - Wild Turkey 101 Friday Pour - Knob Creek 9 Single Barrel Reserve Impress Guests - Eagle Rare Special Occasion - Larceny Barrel Proof B522
Love the video. 25 years of sampling different tastes….a s I would go with: Stagg Jr, Calumet 15, and Kentucky Owl….fabulous. Everyday, I think McKenna and Russels 10 are great. Rare Breed is delightful too. Black Label Weller is pretty fabulous too, but the green label is a nice everyday as well.
I don't *need* any bourbon. 🙂 But my favorites are: 1. Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon 2. Knob Creek 9 3. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked 4. Elijah Craig 5. Four Roses Small Batch
I can see Rare Breed as a go-to, also any regular Redwood Empire (but for bourbon it would be the Pipe Dream). For mixer maybe EW BiB. I'm all over ECBP for a Friday pour, but would never dilute with more than just a couple drops of water. If I want a 90 proof for mixing, I'd just grab EC small batch or Larceny. I'd use Blanton's to impress non-bourbon nerds; for real bourbon enthusiasts I'd go KC18. And agree that Stagg would be a great special occasion pour, or Jos. Magnus Cigar Blend.
I’ve only seen the plastic bottle of JTS Brown and I just have a thing about whiskey in plastic bottles. Even the WT101 I can’t bring myself to buy a plastic bottle of it. These other picks are very solid and I’m a huge fan of the rare breed bourbon and their rye it’s just fantastic. Enjoy!!
1. Daily: Wild Turkey 101 & Early Times 2. Mixer: Benchmark Single Barrel 3. Friday Pour: Penelope Barrel Strength We are still collecting bottles - we are newbies!
My "go to pour" -Tin Cup 10 Cheap Mixer/Backyard sipper -Early Time BiB Friday Pour -Rare Breed Impressive pour -Russell's Reserve SB Special Occasion pour - Stagg.
Rare Breed was our “Go To Pour” when we started drinking bourbon about 15 years ago. We were out of town & tried to buy a bottle of Rare Breed? They suggested Noah’s Mill. We fell in love with it & Noah’s is our go to bourbon now. We rarely have a Rare Breed now. Our special occasion bourbon is Michter’s 10 year. That is about as expensive we are willing to go. At $140 a bottle it’s well worth. Very hard to source. We drink that over a few cubes. I bought 3 bottles at once 8 years ago & still enjoy one bottle at a time. Great review! I’ll try to find those other bottles you suggested?
My five will be eagle rare, Weller special reserve, Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat, red empire pipe dream, and smoke wagon. I did not place them in the order yall described but they will fit the description of them.
6:57 If you’re a fan of ‘Natural Wine’ or have never heard of it before. There’s a growing movement of higher skin contact wine and wine blends from local independent vineyards/wineries. If you have some places or shops in your area outside your grocery store, I can’t recommend enough bottles from Las Jaras, Scotty Boy, Stolpman Vinyards, Duckman, and Big Table Farm. I’ve been able to find some at Whole Foods wine department that range from 25-45 a bottle
I like your list and agree that Elijah Craig is the one for me. An observation: I notice that Erin doesn't blink an eye when Josh says he'll pay $250 for a special one. I'm not sure there are many wives that would be that understanding. Of course, you are running a bourbon channel so maybe that is the reason. Thanks a lot for the channel.
Josh here. We’ve each got our own “fun money” budget monthly and as long as we stay within that-or save it up for bigger splurges-whatever we spend it on is fair game without critique from the other partner. Helps a lot when whiskey splurges come up for me or yarn splurges come up for Erin.
Rare Breed, 101, ECBP, then what ever nice pours that I can find beyond that. Russell's Reserve Single Barrel is never a bottle to be ruled out for sure! Great show! Cheers!
If I could have only 5 (that I’ve actually tasted/ tried) 1. Wild Turkey rare breed 2. Jack Daniels single barrel, barrel proof I think it’s called.. the gold labeled one +/- 63% alcohol 3. Russell’s reserve 10 4. Found north cask strength rye 5. Im really liking EH Taylor small batch (just got first bottle)
I like the Heaven Hill profile and used to actively search for the EC and Larceny thrice yearly releases (B523, etc). But over the years I found them to be uneven in quality, so I stopped automatically longing for them in advance. At the same time I have also kind of gotten over the specialness of different bourbons and just like what tastes good. There's a group for me that includes most of the offerings of: Wild Turkey, Old Forester, Heaven Hill, Widow Jane and other pours I stumble onto in tastings. Since I rarely spend more than $80 on a bottle, like never actually, I just share with my friends whatever I have around. It's all great stuff and flavorful. It's about the friendship with me, as I know is with Josh and Erin. Hey, separate side topic: Matt at ADHD Whiskey is a super great guy with unique intonation and a bodacious humor. If I had a small dinner party on my yacht (if I had a yacht), I would invite you two and Matt and it would be a heck of an evening.
Heh. I like standard easy to find stuff, for the most part, and I can daily, Friday, or mix all of them. Woodford Reserve. Woodford Reserve Double Oak (wonderful base for a manhattan or old fashion, or also neat). Elijah Craig small batch (yeah the regular stuff). 1792. Makers Mark 101. Wild Turkey 101. Ok, that was 6. Any five of those.
Go to: Blade and Bow. That nose... Cheap mixer: Changes, but Rebel 100 usually, or whatever. I'm not drinking it. Friday pour: Four Roses small batch select. Easily my favorite bourbon. Price, availability, and flavor, all there. Impress guests: Right now, I was fortunate enough to get a Blue Note 17. Fantastic. Special occasion: I have a Makers wood finished that my wife and I hand-dipped together at the distillery. Might be a lone voice here by Wild Turkey is meh to my pallet and I could not tell you a worse bourbon for the price than Elijah Craig. Any of it. I keep trying it but me and EJ aren't friends. Just my taste.
It's always interesting to think about this. If I chose specifically for bourbon and limited myself to bottles in my collection or that I have had recently at bars, I think this is how it would go. Go-to bourbon: Probably Four Roses small batch select, but Four Roses single barrel, Knob Creek 12, and Old Forester 1897 would come close. All are good classic style bourbons that don't cost a bloody fortune. Mixer: Wild Turkey 101. It's a good choice since it is good enough for a neat pour and overlaps with the go-to category. Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 is also a great mixer, but it is unimpressive as a neat pour, so I think Wild Turkey 101 edges it out since it is more versatile. The remaining three categories are essentially interchangeable. For "impress your guests" and "special occasion" I have single malt, brandy, and baijiu that is more suited to those occasions, but the bourbons here might come close depending on the guest and the situation. 1. Jack Daniel's single barrel barrel proof. It's some fine tasting, potent firewater. An alternative could be various store picks. I currently have Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, and Eagle Rare store picks, most of which come from small local businesses. Whisky geeks tend to appreciate such things. 2. Garrison Brothers Balmorhea. This could be an "impress your guest" choice for those who aren't afraid of Texas funk. It's also my most expensive bourbon. I like Stagg better than most Buffalo Trace products, but I like Garrison Brothers Balmorhea better and find it more interesting, so when I buy an expensive bottle, this is the sort of thing I'll seek out. 3. Pacific Coast Spirits cask strength bourbon (various releases). These very crafty bourbons from a tiny distillery in southern California aren't for everybody, but they are a wild ride for those who like aggressive and challenging whisky. Every release is different, so this may or may not apply depending on the quality of whatever happens to be available at the time.
Great call on Garrison Brothers! Their Cowboy Bourbon has certainly gotten our attention but we've not yet tried the Balmorhea. Our local Total Wine has several bottles in the case though, and it's tempting to go for it just to have on hand.
Great list. Mine - Every day - Bardstown Origin series or RC Toasted Barrel or Penelope Architect depending on what I have. I’m only having one so it should be good. Mixer - I don’t drink cocktails, so less expensive - WT 101 or OGD BIB Friday night - Redwood Empire cask strength or Grizzly Beast Impress a friend - EH Taylor because most people can’t find it and it’s very good. Special occasions- Calumet 16 or Wellers 12 Another category that would be fun - what would you overpay for at a bar because you’ll never find a bottle. I paid $85 for one ounce of William Larue Weller - totally worth it.
@@Robert.Sheard I've been pretty active in a local Facebook whiskey group for a few years. Sometimes people there talk about participating in the secondary. I've DM'd people there a few times to try to find out more info but no one ever replies. Pretty frustrating for me.
@@stuffandwhiskey It's nice to see a channel admit to turning to secondary. (And I know you've mentioned it in the past.) Not too long ago I was surprised to see a channel admit to getting 80% of their bottles from secondary! And even mentioned competing with other channels there.
A low price mixer I like Bulleit. Makers Mark 46 also, but Bulleit has a harder oak nose which I like. Canada has limited Bourbons, and these vary by provinces so hard to compare to a lot of American bourbons/
1. Stellum (Lyra Leo, or whatever name next) in the $59 for everyday first sip. 2. Sam Grant (Safeway store brand) or Evan Williams for mixer. 3. My impress bottle is William Heavenhill at 137 proof, but, it’s impossible to get. 4. The Friday night pour would be something, almost anything from Barrell. 5. Special Occasion Eagle Rare 17yr. Saving that for the day a certain former reality TV star enters prison. ;). I’m really looking forward to trying some of your suggestions since they are available at my local Total Wine, including Rare Breed and Calumet. I’ve had the Elijah Craig and it’s OK, but not a favorite at the price point.
I didn't hear a price restriction or an availability restriction for this episode. I'm playing with no price restriction but the bottle must be readily available. Go-to Pour: Russell's Reserve 10 year. C'mon man...a solid 10 year bourbon at $40? How do you say no thank you. Cheap Mixer: Old Granddad 114. It's a cheap mixer. Low price point, higher proof that delivers bourbon in most mixed drinks. A mixer staple. Friday Night Pour: I'm going with Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel. I'm a sucker for SB's and the 120 proof is perfect for Friday. Impress Guests: Ancient Ancient Age 10 in a Blanton's bottle, unless you professional whiskey tasters are the guests because you'll see right through this! Special Occasion: This one is hard due to the "readily available" stipulation. If this weren't bourbon only I'd have easily put Redbreast 27 year (have you guys started your $35/month for two years plan?). But since this is bourbon only I'm going with Chicken Cock - It's available. it's about $70, and let's face it, when the family is over for Thanksgiving or Christmas and you loudly ask someone if they want some Chicken Cock...well, that's special! Immature, sure, but still special. Plus it's good and most people don't have it. Just out of curiosity, where do you store 300 bottles? My bar holds 18 bottles, the bar overflow closet has around 40 - 50 bottles and the stash in the garage is probably another 20. And I think I have a lot! Does that 300 include the sample pool?
The answer is anywhere and everywhere because storing 300 bottles necessitates some creativity and some low-grade hoarding as well. 😂 That does not include the samples but we’ve likely got that many samples on hand as well (if not more). It’s a lot. Too much really. 😅
Of the bottles I own, I'd always have as a regular sipper an Eagle Rare store picks (easy to get in London now and even tastier than the normal one), mixer would be Makers Mark (don't have your array of cheap pours in the UK and it's one of the cheapest over here at around £25), Friday night pour is OF 1920, Impress the Guests bottle is a Kings County pick by a friend that is high in proof but doesn't feel like the proof other than it's so full of flavour and my Special Occasion bottle is GTS 2020 bottle (which will have to be replaced in the not so distant future, sadness).
The other day, a friend who isn’t super into bourbon but who has some very generous friends and family, pulled out a Calumet 15, a Fiddler, and the Four Gates Kelvin Bourrye. I have a Calumet 15 that I don’t remember hitting as well as this one did. That pour was dynamite. I’ve only had a couple bar pours of Stagg Jr. but this really reminded me of Stagg. The Four Gate landed easily in second, as it should, but the Calumet was noticeably better.
Great list! I might make OF 100 the mixer and wT101 is my daily drinker. But have Four Gate KC5 and Stagg (some ) batches and agree with you completely. Also hear ECBP c923 is great, just have not found it yet….
it is cool to have crazy expensive bourbon that cost over $90 for 750ML, but I have found, that many that cost less than $50 taste better. I really like Eagle Rare bought at the distillery for $40ish, wife and I, so, we get two bottles, (Buffalo Trace almost as good). My normal 5 bottles: Knob Creek 9, Makers Mark, Larceny normal proof, E Craig normal proof, Buffalo Trace, and next would be 1792, Heaven Hill Bottled in bond, Russell Rev Single Barrel, Weller Special Res. at normal price (>$30).
Jim Beam on the rocks, everyday, 7 days a week…. 😅. I would love to enjoy all these bourbons, but I feel like my palette (?) is too bleh to notice much, like it’s too black and white. Things are either good or bad… so Jim Beam it is, everything else is a treat.
