If you've never heard it... check out Andy Cizek's cover of Given Up. Only cover I've heard with a LEGIT scream in that part. It's one of my favorite Chester parts, and I think Andy absolutely nailed the whole cover, but that part especially. Cheers!

here's a funny thing, I was so obsessed with this 17 second scream in 'Given Up' when i first heard it, I wanted to match that right away. I tried it weeks and weeks in a row. I'm not reallty a great singer and I'm asthmatic too, but weirdly, at one point I was able to match it without blowing my vocal chords or hurting myself. I even blew some of my friends' minds at a karaoke party with it, and even fluently switching the 2 tones without catching a breath. I felt like a king. It has been a while now though and I don't know if I still got it.

Anthony. You really should consider doing some breaking downs of some singer performances, kinda what you're doing hear but do one song/performer at a time, it's really interesting. I've been looking for someone that can both explain and reconstruct what the artist is doing, and so far you're the only one doing it convincingly. Love your videos man, keep it up!

Singing is part of my job, specifically rock, and for me the hardest part of ‘given up’ isn’t the scream, I can on occasion find a place in my voice for it, it’s being able to go back into the chorus straight away post scream which separates Chester from literally anyone else. That whole trend… I don’t think I saw anyone continue into the chorus. That’s the kicker. Chester was insane.

I picked that song not only because it's really fucking difficult but also because the screams at the end of the song are very special. that was also the first time in 8 years they used his screams on an album

Can’t believe - challenge video! Love such videos, cause you always win, Anthony! Even French rap. Btw, French is easy to pronounce. When I’ve been in Germany and tried to speak Deutsch, they were talking, that I’m speaking French. Miracles. AC/DC - with all respect, never understood the fun of their vocal. Leprous - me too impressed by official audio, but didn’t like the live. Then I checked other live shows, true - beautiful clean voice! I thought they are from Eastern Europe by sound, but they are Norwegian. Don’t know what to compare.. Your vocal is the best, Anthony! And if you are also so modest - that’s your extra win!

The singer of Landmvrks is actually really interesting. He has the same abilities of chester, but can also rap and does insane low growls. You should check out their album lost in the waves, or some of his live stuff. very impressive. it's way less overproduced as well.

On the Breaking Bad note, I kept insisting my husband would love that show, and he would just never watch it. Then he watched Better Call Saul, and I put two and two together halfway through an episode that he was watching on his own that they were part of the same story, THEN he decided to watch Breaking Bad and he loved it. =D ALSO, I love with Anthony sings Chris Cornell songs, because he does it SO WELL.

Very interesting, great job on vocals. :) Through this series you started liking Dir En Grey, right? Dir En Grey is Visual Kei band, it's japanese movement as music, fashion and subculture, there are some theatrical elements, you can hear it for example in clean vocals. So, I have some interesting Visual Kei recommendations for you to try. ;) Dimlim - Vanitas, scream at 2:31 in music video. Kaya - Salome, difference between low notes from verses and high notes at 3:42 in PV (promotional video) or at 3:32 in audio. Dexcore - Skindeep, rapping/screaming part at 1:25 in music video. I hope you will try it!

If you do another one of these in the near future a really nice, underrated song is "Puzzle" by Koethe. The long note in the middle section and the high note at the end would be cool to see :) Edit: Also for the Given Up scream make sure youre breathing in theough your back as well. In some live performances (of any of his songs) you can see his lungs expanding in his back. You're a good singer so chances are you know that but worth saying. Also you seem to go for more of a full on fry scream with yours while he almost has more of a mix, at least in comparison. Probably just a stylistic choice with you two but something I noticed

once again, still gonna request the scream about about 3:27 in For All by Ember Falls. The way their harsh vocalist (who's also their lead guitarist) manages to hold that clean of a note while still sounding harsh as hell is super impressive, AND it's a super high note too. Damn Anthony that was AMAZING!!! I can't say you were "pitch perfect" on any one of them but you managed to come so close! However your Chester Bennington scream was so on target, not quite a bullseye but who else but Chester could really do it? I try to scream I choke on it, I'd do better with a scared high pitch scream as you'd hear in a horror movie. I can do somewhat of a growl but I have a hard time projecting it and that much is all thanks to Stevie in the "Somebody's Watching Me" video. Again actually trying to project the growl I just choke on it.....UGH!!! They say practice makes perfect but I'm not willing to ruin my voice just trying to figure it out.

Im not good at screaming but how chester got his air for given up he sings it like fuc (breath in) kin (breath in) mis (breath in) a (breath in) reyyyyyyy so you build up air in between each syllable. Maybe that will help you hold the note better you got this man. Love your work 👍

The thing about how Chester did it in Given Up is that he manages to get a clear sound but he actually keeps the volume pretty low. I imagine that's one of the reasons why he could do that insanely long scream.

Far be it from me to even coach someone so good, being basically an ametuer... but I'm ok at harsh vocals. For long screams, I have managed to go 11-12 seconds without too much issue, can't do 18 that's a bit too insane. The thing that's tricky I think is that the energy itself we use to get into the screaming tone is so intense, it's so easy even for me to get adrenaline rushes doing vocals because it's fun af. But with long screams you almost need to calm down and preserve your energy, you can't go full on the whole time or it will only last 6-8 tops and at the end you'll end up with some ungodly weak tone. So I guess I've found I can extend it by practicing quieter screams, and going into screaming with an attitude of "this part is boring" or "this part is fine." And thinking of it like "I'm gonna keep my breath as steady as possible while I'm doing this." IDK might help, maybe I am full of it who knows haha. I hear it's much easier with the fry technique, I don't use fry I use false chord I'm pretty sure. P.S. I suppose it helps that I was a "long distance runner" treadmill champion for a while. If you're sprinting you can't long distance run. If you go gungho on a scream you won't be able to stretch it out.
