You hid in your cowardice once again, you lowly traitor! I've been challenging you to sing Involuntary Doppelganger by Archspire for months and you still haven't picked it up! Shame on you Anthony! Just joking, but you should really try that song
The thing about Given Up… I see people nailing the scream, but to be able to go from that breakdown straight back into those chorus vocal lines is what separates the men from the boys. Very tough, Chester was outrageous.
Going from that very intense chorus to a very intense screaming WHILE HOLDING NOTES (it wasn't just screaming) and THEN going back to that A4 on the chorus. Chester was a god.
Yeah it's crazy. Anthony is probably the only high vocals vocalist alive that would give Bruce Dickinson a run for his money. I just wish Anthony would do more of the low vocals because he has a mad vocal range.
@@heavymetalhorseman2068 he has covered type o negative before.....that's the lowest part of anthony's vocal range that we will ever hear, in my opinion
@@edvinparmeza1298 I noticed that he won't do any Dani Filth. He can do it if he doesn't prep for it, but he just won't do it for some weird reason. I mean, why do Alex Terrible, but no Dani Filth? Alex Terrible is much deeper vocal-wise.
Linkin park is my heart and soul. I saw Chester in the thumbnail, saw impossible songs, and I knew exactly what it was 😆 I've seen a lot of your videos and your given up scream has gotten better every time
This guy clearly has amazing vocals!!Chester sounds like he has 2 or 3 different voices at the same time if you really listen! He n Chris Cornell are vocal beasts so i have total respect for anyone who attempts to cover their songs without completely either destroying their vocal chords or just failing completely lol
@@linkinlady79 chester was those strange voice out there, scream, sing, high powerful notes, but sound lighter at the same time, one of this producer even say he was so strange it was like having harmonies in his harmonies, at this time we would have 2nd album after one more light :s
maybe he should sing RICH BITCH hahahah,no offense snowflakes ,yes rip to the sellout who in the end got balls and told truth about hollywood you dont give a shit about while living virtual life
@@Black3ight go seaech "live in texas" Tokyo" and "mosco" all of em chester sang it 17 sec Just in califonia he sang in 15 sec Aaaaand one of their concert chester takes 2 part because he sang three heavy song in row and given up was the fourth one, like what do you execpt? Even corey taylor can't reach the heavy note ( i said note not just grawling)
@@fatemehghanbari7203 Chester himself have said that most of the time during concerts he couldn't do it. He knew during the song if he was able to do it or not.
The hardest part about Bruce's singing is being able to keep the correct notes while bouncing all over the stage with the energy he does, somehow not getting tired or losing his voice.
Chester had those pitch screams down to a fine art by the time "Given Up" was written. He had a posthumous guest appearance on Mark Mortons solo album and it hurt to hear him totally nail that style again. He will never be forgotten. 🖤😥
I saw Painkiller live at Louder Than Life a couple weeks ago, and Rob Halford has still got it. Oh, on a side note, during this song the guitarist ruptured his aorta and finished the song before being rushed to the hospital
The singing a note while screaming has always been so incredibly impressive to me. Like Chester does in given up, or Randy Blythe does in some of lamb of gods stuff. That shit is so amazing and blows my mind.
@@whatiwasgoingtosay Earlier on, like Hybrid and Meteora, Chester was **shredding** his cords to get those screams. The way he adapted later on to keep himself from injury is something I feel like you can only achieve if you spend years fucking yourself up first.
Bruce once said in an interview that when recording NOTB the engineer had him repeat the opening lines so many times that he got sick of them, so when he said "Ok, now do the scream" he replied "Oh, GLADLY!". So there's a lot of pent-up frustration in there.
He's screaming "Why?" in response to the engineer asking him to do it for the thousandth time or w/e, it wasn't even planned that way, he just did it and it was on tape and ended up in the song.
As far as I'm aware of, I've NEVER heard anybody do it like Chester could in Given Up. That man oozed talent and it doesn't matter what you think of him, he's a fucking legend.
That final "did it all for yooooooooouuuuuu" is one of those musical moments that is guaranteed to cause a physical reaction in me. Sort of a shiver, goosebumps, arm hair standing up.. It's just so powerful and full of emotion, of pain and pity and anger. Very interesting backstory, how he eventually grew past his own disgust and anger as seen in the 10000 Days album.
Maynard has also been one of my few idols, my first tattoo was "The Patient" tattooed on my arm. The only band I've seen multiple times is tool and a perfect circle (never got to see puscifer tho).
His hauntingly beautiful voice and lyrics are just amazing. I have had some of the greatest experiences of my life listening to his music. The passion and thought that goes into it is nearly unmatched anywhere
To me Joe is a bit like Chino Moreno in the sense that they never sing a melody you would expect over the melody of what the guitars are doing. It's always a little bit off kilter and strange rhythmically but it always ends up working somehow. Then trying to emulate their tones is a whole other challenge on its own.
In light of "The Grudge" I would LOVE to see you do the 10 "Prying Open My Third Eye" phrases at the end of Third Eye. I don't think that Maynard himself has screamed all 10 phrases live a single performance, just because the type of scream he does is just guttural and sounding like you're sandpapering your vocal cords and you don't have a lot of breathing room between the phrases, so you can't go "huughl" when you breathe in. If i recall, he didn't pay much attention to his technique when it came to screams and that's mostly why he doesn't scream anymore. Third Eye is definitely a big culprit to that.
Pretty sure he did the full 10 the first date they played it live and fucked up his voice for a while. There's a video floating around somewhere on YT.
I swear Loudwire has the cheapest, most low effort lists... BUT I am glad Anthony is covering them because they're popular and he does a wonderful job covering them. Also, I would love to see you tackle THAT scream on Devin Townsend's Things Beyond Things.
It's always the same idea of "Liberals thought it is too Conservative while Conservatives thought it is too Liberals" and this comment is a good example of this case. I'm sure Loudwire can make a list of 10 song from some unhead underground band from like Sweden or some sh1t who has like only 10 listeners, aka haven't "sold out", and the masses will ask where are the classics or the famous ones? And if Loudwire came out with a list of the classics and well known, then some elitists will go "where is *my* _____ underground death metal no one has ever heard of" The Metal community is just a perpetual cycle of hate, elitism and big d1ck competition syndrome
Strapping Young Lad - "Shitstorm" - Where Dev yells "Fuck YOU" around 2:15 or Devin Townsend Project - "Kingdom" - pretty much the whole song, but especially the line "there is no worry I'm fine", for that "screaming on a note" thing
10:52 "There's nothing like a Maynard yell." Damn right. Maynard's style is so primal and raw. It's sad that he can't do it much anymore, but I'm glad we had it to begin with.
What really surprises me about Maynard is being able to sustain that scream in a vowel like "ou"! When Anthony does it he makes a slight "e" shape with his mouth, but Maynard maintains the "o" quality much more clearly, and I just find it really admirable!
Just for the meme: Jinjer - Pisces (Live Session) time 4:25 when she gets from the high notes to the growl. I want to see you get it in one take, without cuts, perfectly till the end. Muse - Take A Bow. At the end 'round 4:10 when the drums finish and it goes all hell...that high note, dayumn.
I was expecting "Crawling" by Linkin Park should be on the list in the hardest songs to sing. 9:22 Given up was one of my favorite heavy metal songs all time because of drum groove and heavy riffs! Anthony nailed the high pitch but can't hold his breath any longer unlike Chester in the recording.. Didn't expect that for real.
I've always felt like A Perfect Circle was always underrated to an extent and overshadowed by Tool. Love me some, A Perfect Circle, Pet was always one of my favorites by them. 🤘
I love and know every single apc song. If I had to choose a favorite I don't think I could Orestes, Magedelena, Talk Talk, Let's have a War these are just some that I normally listen to first. Apc and Tool both drown out his other band Puscifer though. If for some reason you decide to go listen to Puscifer I would start with Momma Sed, Humbling River, Mission, or Vagina Mine and only because some of the others may make you feel "ify" about Puscifer.
I loved this comment I saw regarding Maynard's projects: "Tool is for your brain A Perfect Circle is your heart Puscifer is for your genitals" Pet is an excellent song!
@@scottymcribofficial I have always felt, because of Maynard's sense of humour, that all his bands are references to genitals...Tool is the Penis, Puscifer is well, the vagina, and A Perfect Circle is the asshole...now he just needs a band that's a euphemism for boobs
If you can match King Diamond and Rob Halford voice you have my total respect and admiration. You are one hell of an artist. Abrazo mexicano!!!!! 🤘🏻🇲🇽🤘🏻🇲🇽🤘🏻🇲🇽🤘🏻
that's actually Serj screaming there, and it still baffles me how he could manage it given the band went half a step up in their tuning for Mezmerize/Hypnotize, also a shame it took a toll on his vocal capabilities afterwards, mainly losing a lot of the graspy nature of his singing
@@mazzaaa3920 actually it’s funny you mention that because “Question!” Is the only song still in Drop C on the mesmerize/hypnotize era😂 but still, that’s very high for him
I'm also a singer and play on underground scene in Poland, watching your videos, inspire, learning the tips, I put my vocals on a fucking incredible level without hurting myself. I had my own list of 5 singers and inspirators of all time, and you're the 6 one, but on 1st honoured place for inspiration. Keep your great work, couse you're inspire whole new generation of rock/metal singers! \m/ Greets from Poland, I wish i could sings once with you man \m/ Have a great time!
When you did man in the box it felt almost jazzy on the cleaner bits. Your voice has lovely timbre. Also that scream is amazing, how you hold it is crazy.
With Cemetery Gates like you said, "the memory still remains" etc. is actually much harder, because the dude managed to get that note like 90% chest yet smooth as fucking silk, it's honestly stupidly hard to emulate because you need that thick baritone low end as well, super hard to do justice
Very entertaining video haha. Can see you’re having good fun with this. Your vocal skill has increased so much since the earlier days of 10 second songs. Great work!
People have always shat on Spencer but he's an amazing singer with incredible power and range and you can really feel the emotion through his delivery.
Not on the list but one I love aswell is the final part from Tool's The Pot, that "you have been out of your miiiiiiiind". Always chills the hell out of my backbone, everytime.
Anthony, I gotta tell you, as a musician and an amateur singer this series is really enjoyable! It's like talking music with a friend, absolutely lovely. And that aside, seriously, your vocal versatility and prowess sometimes scares me. 😆
One song I’ve never seen you try, that I’d love to see you sing is Soundgarden - Beyond The Wheel. I know it’s well within your range, but it’s one I’ve always wanted to hear from you. 🤘🏼
Amazing thing about The Grudge is back on the Lateralus tour Maynard would actually nail that 25 second scream live. Also I would now add Periphery's Satellites to this list, those who know it know which part I'm talking about and I would also argue Death's cover of Painkiller is even harder to sing than the original.
Not only do you have an amazing voice but you come out with some witty lines. My favourite in this one was your listening to Rob Halford and saying 'it makes me wanna just put on leather!' Love it!
You are a BEAST! Good in imitation on these vocals that not many people who aren't vocally talented like fans we all are. You study very well to do these vocals. Bravo man
the difference between the reference songs and Anthony singing in the video is that some of the references are singing in front of the crowd or with a group, while he is in his room alone. singing in front of a crowd, thousands of people, and super noisy surroundings, you can easily project and add power to your voice without trying, while doing it in the room alone is super hard, especially if you are the only one generating a loud sound. Anthony can sing the reference songs easily if he is in the same situation. for example 6:30.
I love this video. I'm a Soprano and some of these notes are easy for me to do but I *wish* I could do fry and an actual scream instead of just being able to belt. I really appreciate Anthony's insight into some of these lines 🙌
Great job 2cd time around on Chester's Given Up...my absolute favorite song by Linkin Park always was impressed with that killer scream. You had it almost to the second.
I don't know, if Anthony has already attempted it, but if not: The opening scream of Dio in "Heaven & Hell - The Mob Rules (Official Live Video)" is pretty high and awesome.
Man you're so near to the pitch each time! You sure have many year's of practice behind your throat. It's so amazing to hear and inspiring, keep up the good work!!
Would be dope to hear Anthony's take on the song "Music" by Nightwish. I bet our dude here could deal with its vocal gymnastics in style. 😁 Or any Nightwish song...
O yea, a bit of Floor appreciation. GLS comes to mind immediately, but All things..., Shudder, Weak Fantasy, etc, etc are dang great (live too....like DANG!!)
Chester Bennington was a vocal enigma. He could go so hard into a scream and like Anthony V said it's not just a scream he's still hitting notes but then very quickly after go right back to a his regular tone and sing so damn well. When he died it hit me hard because LP was such a personal favorite growing up, I must've listened to Hybrid Theory and Minutes to Midnight 100 times each and I still love those albums.
Holy shieeett that Given Up scream is so much better compared to your other videos on it. It's amazing to see you're still improving after all this time. Good stuff
@Anthony DUDE!!!You literally sounded like Chris n Chester singing together when you did that Given Up scream!!You have an awesomely unique tone to your voice n I LOVE IITT!!!
Ohhh.. Love it when you tried "given up" and nearly got there! Maybe try singing crawling or War(hunting party) ! Your work is always awesome and fun to watch, keep it going 👌
the cemetary gates part when u mentioned the mix of chest and head voice, now after i learned screaming and am getting better in cleans. never have i ever related with something more xd
Tim “Ripper” Owens doing vocals for “Abigail” by King Diamond for Roadrunner United is one of my all time favorite vocal performances! For sure needs more recognition.
im sure someone else has said it before but its so humbling seeing you attempt whatever line it is, and accept it whether you nail it or not. like you can have an awesome voice, but that doesnt mean you have to be able to do everything. just have fun with singing n stuff. makes be feel good about my own ability and the lack thereof too. rock on
Sick bruh! I like your impression of Chester's scream. And all the others actually. I'm just a huge Linkin Park lover. You're killing it man. I like your voice. Keep on rocking. 🤘
I would love to see the final scream in the song “Backbreaker” in Fit for a King which last for 25 seconds. It’s the last vocal note of the song and I get chills every time I hear it
I definitely love Tool and Perfect Circle...would love to hear more of you doing some of there songs. Anthony sweet job!🍬🍫🍬Still waiting for "Fly to the Angels" by Slaughter from you.🥺🥺🥺
