Omg how did that not hit me wow!! That's insane! Poor guy wouldn't have been able to talk at all to try and get out of that situation. To be fair she dosed Joe so much that he couldn't talk verbally which makes no sense either since he had the pill and it was due to seeping into the skin so it's weird it was that strong to make him not even able to speak slightly. But if she dosed her first husband correctly there's absolutely no way he could have tried to reason with her or for what Love wants to hear agree with her to get out of the situation alive.

I don’t think the intent of Joe being a “protector” is to give him a humanizing side. I actually think the point is to highlight how deranged he really is. He sees himself as a good guy who’s “forced” to commit these murders in order to protect ppl. He’s clearly insane but, unlike Love, he’s methodical and purposeful with his murders, and that’s how he justifies it all. Also, I really enjoyed this season and thought the whole Bonnie and Clyde vibe made it entertaining and different from the last two seasons.

I agree, there was a good cinematic energy to the two of them working together (like a pair of antiheroes or villains in a slice of life), and honestly his whole “I must escape her evil ways” was so annoying.
@sp0ngeb00b7
@sp0ngeb00b7 2 года назад
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but, I like Joe's "protector" mentality because, I think dehumanising morally objectionable characters is actually an issue that takes away from the fact that murder, r*pe, stalking/harassment, etc. are all our very HUMAN faults. Like, yeah these people are monsters, but they ARE humans and that's WHY they're so capable of this stuff, you can humanise a "bad" anti-hero character WITHOUT glorifying them and people don't seem to understand that. I say this without malice of course, I love Amanda and I have no qualms with all y'all others here! But dehumanising these characters ignores the complete mess and violent nature of the human condition, and it probably also discourages people with violent/intrusive thoughts from going to get help because they think they're not worthy of people's time. Which, I can imagine, encourages some reckless and dangerous behaviour, potentially, for OTHER people. At the end of the day, people who commit these kinds of atrocities, are still **people** and probably have weaknesses (as all of us do). It's extremely reasonable to believe that someone with as strong as a saviour complex as Joe, who wants nothing more than for his child to live a crime/violence-free life and not experience the same traumas he did, would also see himself reflected in other kids in his neighbourhoods who are struggling for a better life and therefore would want to shelter them. Help them, in the only ways he knows how, removing the problems from their lives.
@sp0ngeb00b7
@sp0ngeb00b7 2 года назад
I also personally did not realise how chaotic and overly-eventful this season was until Amanda pointed it out, hahaha! I actually did not have an issue with this, after watching S2 when it first came out a while back and not being able to finish it (not bc it was boring btw), I jumped into S3 as a fresh start and the chaos was addictive as hell! Though I do maybe wish, either Marienne or Natalie were removed from the season to really give Joe/Love's Bonnie and Clyde dynamic more spotlight, and give us a chance for more chemistry at least, before things inevitably went downhill (they always would've, but seeing them as a power couple was all I wanted out of the season tbh!).
@supercookie798
@supercookie798 2 года назад
Also, Most episodes take place from HIS perspective, so it makes a lot of sense that that would be the narrative. It has to be. Because Joe's actions performed by a person who fully knows how horrible he is are not what is scary about that show. And that mindset and view of himself is what keeps him killing: wherever he goes, he finds new people he has to "protect", most of the time leaving them off worse than before.

One bit I loved? Joe giving up his son at the end. Because to him, it's to "free" the kid from some sorrow and a tiny bit of self-reflection that he's not fit to be a father. But, being Joe, he can't face HE'S the problem so it's more "everyone else makes my life too crazy to handle you too, so have to have you avoid it" so he's giving the kid a shot at not being raised by a psychopath but for the wrong reasons.
@beccabraiman
@beccabraiman 2 года назад
I agree with this, and I also think he was probably just over being a parent. He’s what most people would probably call a psychopath and while I think he cares for his son, I don’t know that it’s in the same way a normal person would love their son. It’s a lot of work to be a parent and multiple times his son was an obstacle to being with/obsessing over Marienne. So tbh I think he just preferred to be unburdened in his stalking.

So I was the one that portrayed Gil's son, Alan, in Episode 4 of the season! And at the time of booking this, nobody told me anything about my character, just that I was important to my dad who I knew would be killed by the end of the episode. It was really cool though since I had a name and I knew that I'd have some sort of significance to the plot of the episode. So imagine my FUCKING SHOCK when this season drops and I learn that they made me into a sex predator, complete with the creepy police sketch and everything... It's been a wild week or so since the season dropped and I'm still extremely conflicted about the whole thing because while it's a huge show to be included in, I just wish I had some sort of heads up about the whole thing. Maybe they didn't think I'd take the job if I knew what the full role entailed? Regardless, nice experience on the day, but it was very jarring to see the direction they took with my character. I kinda wish that they'd invite me back just to kill me, tbh.

Wow I can absolutely understand why that would throw you off if you weren't given any details. I'm guessing it's because that was directly linked to one of the main spoilers of the show around Gil? If it helps, I'm sure no one is ever going to judge you for playing the role.

@@AmandaTheJedi That could have been the case, but I'm also pretty sure I signed an NDA, so it just seems like a very big detail to simply gloss over, but that could have been a part of the whole contract, I guess. I've always thought that the helping kids subplots are less about trying to redeem him and more about showing how delusional he is. @AmandaTheJedi

I can get on board with that concept being their intention - but I just know Joe wouldn't be able to make himself give a fuck if it ever got in the way of his current obsession.
@aprilandpedro9823
@aprilandpedro9823 2 года назад
Absolutely! Actually I think Joe makes a point to pretend to help kids just so he can keep telling himself that he's a good guy. Yeah he kills other bad people like Paco's mother's psychotic boyfriend in season one and the comedian who preyed on Delilah and Ellie in season two. Joe likes to see himself as an executioner who metes out divine justice only to bad people who truly deserve to die. But really I think Joe kills people simply because he likes to and he doesn't want anybody getting in the way of wants. He convinced himself that Beck and Candace were evil monsters that broke his heart and therefore deserved to die for it. But really they were just flaky immature girls who didn't know what they wanted. But Joe decided that they deserved to die because they didn't want him in the end. He sends money to Ellie every month. But that doesn't fix anything because her sister is still dead because of him and Love. Money doesn't change the fact that he ruined her life. I'm glad they didn't bring Paco back after season one because Joe would have ruined his life too. Paco has enough problems just with his drug-addicted absentee mom. Good foster parents might have actually improved his life.

@@troygarcia6674 Yeah true! That's a very good point. It goes to show that you wouldn't necessarily know that some people are bad people til you get to know them really well. And you might not necessarily know you were in danger until it was too late. Which is really scary!

There's a scene in season 1 where Paco's parents are fighting and Joe is just listening in his apartment. Beck asks "why don't you do something?" and basically he says "I don't like getting involved in people's lives". Obvious irony aside, this shows that Joe doesn't really want to help people. He just wants to feel like he did. All Paco wants is genuine support and guidance and all Joe does is give him a book telling him to "suck it up".

Yes so true. An interesting fact about the measles vaccine that i found out though is that it doesn't always protect into adulthood, a few years ago i was required to show proof of MMR for work (preschool teacher) but my mom couldn't find the records due to moving and because i was an adult she didn't think it would be needed anymore, anyway i had to get a blood test proving immunity but turns out my antibodies were to low to be considered immune. Not defending Joe in any way but him being scared of Love killing people is just emphasizing how delusional he is. He thinks he murders people because 'it was the right thing to do'. The clearest example would be when he tried to 'protect' Beck from her boyfriend. But then when Love does it, he thinks it's effed up. That is what I like the most in this season tbh on how they play that they both think they are doing the right thing while the other thinks otherwise.

While they don't confirm it, the implication that Joe had, at least subconsciously, memorized/scouted out that location just in case he had to murder Natalie or even Love at some point really speaks volumes to how delusional and dangerous Joe is and made me really sympathize with Love's character. Sure, she's just as crazy as Joe and is much more openly willing to murder people, but given what she knows about Joe its really not hard to come to the conclusion that Joe would potentially murder her if he fell in love enough with another woman.

The evil acts that commits for the vulnerable children that he encounters reinforces his internal logic that he's actually a good guy. It's also a reenactment of his own childhood trauma being bullied. Not justifying his actions on a moral level here. Just speaking on the ways that his actions align with his internal logic.

Agreed! I adore her character; and I liked this season a LOT, it was absolutely bonkers, but it was INTERESTING af, I loved seeing Love, not being able to tell what would happen next; ESPECIALLY WITH LOVE! The intensely emotional nature of character, while (in her mind) being the perfect devoted mother for her FIRST INFANT as well as the best partner for Joe; to see her try SO MUCH and so desperately to just be okay, not happy but alright and still entirely fail while watching her life constantly continuing to fall apart (like since she was born from what we know of her backstory) it was very interesting. I also relate to her (to a point obviously!!! ^^”) as someone who has a few mental illness related to extreme emotions, BPD for example, and is feminine and AFAB have outbursts and how ppl in the show and irl speak about it. Also, as someone who was also in an extremely abusive delusional relationship at her age, it was heartbreaking to go through but watching this season was like therapeutic? As in I could spot so many of the red flags (as in the small ones not like MURDERER or cheating) that I wouldn’t have a few years ago. TLDR I’m legitimately disappointed she’s gone BUT maybe they’ll do something like make her a ghost/hallucinations Joe has? I’d be so down for that.

I like the dynamic between Love and Joe, and the way they demonstrate a loveless and abusive marriage to such a dramatic extent, but still with the feelings of anger, jealousy, and hypocrisy that a real couple could feel and use against each other. My main issue is that by the end, none of it matters. Love is dead, and Joe is able to move on to next girl. And it makes me question how much of season 3 is really important. Like it made sense in the previous two, to have hard resets, but now it just makes the past 2 seasons feel useless. Like do we know more about Joe than we did before? Not really. Is Marianne that interesting to have another season for? Nope. So why not just end the show at season 3 with something that actually gives closure?

I think that's a fair point. Joe doesn't really learn anything. He doesn't grow in any tangible way, unlike a character like Dexter Morgan. Even in Dexter, when Rita died, Dexter had Harrison all the way until the final episode 4 seasons later.

I thought it was perfect that Love was just like Joe, making him look at a mirror image of himself, and yet he came out hating it. Season 3 should have been Joe realizing how horrifying he is through the lense watching Love do the same things he’s done in the past, and then finally dying at her hands alongside her. Love could have been his greatest punishment. Technically him having to lose his son bc of her is a punishment of sorts, but he moves on so quickly just to go do what he’s always done before with another woman. That is what I feel like cheapens the entire story- he “wins” over Love, and gets to start all over again. Continuing the Joe as an anit-hero thread rather than someone that needs to really face all the horrible things he’s done.

I'd love a movie where it all seems super romantic cliché like they always bumb into each other at unexpected places, they can just talk for hours, guy remembers all the little things, etc. Just to in the last 15 or 20 minutes to reveal that in fact it has all been staged (kinda like we see it when love reveals all the stalking she has done, just not as murdery or over the top). Like this you get super inveszed into the male character as well and the female and you get super flipped out when it gets revelead that in fact the random romantic fate encounters have come from him stalking her and setting it up. Talking for hours? He researched the shit out of her interests to be able to give her the most awesome convo of her life - as if they were meant to be. Etc. It would also be interesting to have this revelation without the woman knowing. She still thinks her partner is this amazing guy, but we the viewer leave the theater knowing he tricked and manipulated her. What is going to happen to her?

I feel like the first season so far has been the strongest one, the story was simpler and more streamlined, the message more clear. The second season had many convoluted subplots but at least I got what they were trying to do... but this season, just, so many unnecessary things happen that it left me feeling more confused than anything. Aside from that, it didn't feel like the show was trying to elevate the themes or add anything new to say to what we've seen past seasons, I feel that they added all these unnecessary subplots because they probably realized that it would've been boring if the story was just Joe stalking some woman again, but instead of trying to think of a new storyline that added or elevated the themes they had been previously exploring, they just added a bunch of melodrama that lead to nothing. I also feel like we don't get to see much of Marienne outside of Joe's perspective. One of the things that I really liked from the first season is that you get to see Joe's version of Beck which is super romanticized but then it also shows you Beck just going around her life, and you can see that she was different than what Joe perceived her as. In the second season they didn't really did this with Love but in the ending you not only see that this was fake by Love turning out to be a murderer, but also that this "perfect girl" was an image that she herself fabricated. But with Marienne we don't get to see her outside from Joe's perspective, and maybe see how he might be romanticizing her.

I have to say, I kind of really enjoyed season 3... I mean it's batshit crazy, but once I accepted it, I just enjoyed the ride and had a good laugh, it almost reminded me of black humour comedies like "Death becomes her". It was just bursting with energy starting from episode 1! That 1st kill was definitely unexpected at that point, and then they just went for it. And yes, I would watch it regardless of anything just for Victoria Pedretti :-)

This season took the "WTF" quota from 1 & 2 and kept overfilling it with each episode. I almost physically came apart with each new dilemma. Although I did not expect Love to die with them being 1 step ahead of each other and her somehow more psychotic. My biggest problem with season 3 (and moving forward) is that we are entering the fourth season of a show in which the main character has not had any meaningful or interesting development. He is the same exact stalker/psycho he was in season one and I have no interest watching him obsess over another girl. We have seen him stalk like 4-5 different girls at this point? The dynamic between him and Love gave the show something interesting to build on. He is cold and calculated whereas Love was hot-headed and impulsive. Most of all, if the birth of his child and a partner who reflects his true character (and accepts him for it) is not enough for Joe to settle down then why should I get invested in his next journey? Joe has always been a HORRIBLE person but he is well beyond being redeemable at this point and I just can't see where the show goes from here

@@Argos-xb8ek Eh, I disagree. I think Joe was fairly self-aware in S1 and definitely in S2. I think this season more than anything proves how awful Joe is. Because his monologues were infrequent in this season, you can tell he’s just a super dull guy who women seem to fawn over for no reason. Like he literally never talks. I love that we see the whole series through joes perspective and his methodical planning and voice of reason to every fucked up thing he does convincing himself and therefore convincing the viewer of his perspective and how his actions have any sort of validity or reason, is always completely derailed whenever we see a little box of the things that joe has collected from his stalkee off screen. It’s such a funny and jarring juxtaposition because we’re led to believe this man has some boundaries as to what is too far or too creepy, and then you realize he has a used tampon in a box and you’re like oh no he’s just comeoletely off the rails

Also, can we talk about how iffy the Theo/Love plot was? Like, I *know* he's in college, and is technically legal...but he's still a vulnerable boy, and there were so many comparisons between him and Forty with the substance issues and how Love was initially very protective of him (almost like how Joe looked out for Paco and Ellie IMO) that it made me question the writers. Love's first kill was the babysitter that groomed her brother as a teen, literally a predator. And yet there's nothing indicating that what she's doing to Theo is very *very* similar? Feel free to reply, I'm still trying to sort my thoughts out over this subplot.

This was a huge problem for me as well. I didn’t know they added his “protector of children” thing to the show but I actually think it makes sense. For one it’s how he sees himself. I enjoyed it! I found season 1 to be good, season 2 was amazing and this one was a piping hot mess that I really liked. I did expect some Bonnie and Clyde action kinda but I can totally understand why it didn't go that way because while we as watchers see Joe and Love as obviously perfect for each other, Joe doesn't because he can't accept that his "crazy" wife is just like him, as you mentioned he doesn't see himself as crazy and he doesn't want to see himself as crazy but seeing a reminder of being just that every day through his wife is unbearable for him. Plus, because of his mommy issues and saviour complex, he wants a woman he needs to protect, and Love of course isn't that. I do hope season 4 is the last one, so it doesn't get too repetitive and I do hope he gets arrested at the end of the show because after all this was supposed to be a show about the dangerous romanticization of toxic tropes in romance media. But I still enjoyed this season a lot because it was just so funny and chaotic and I'm not gonna lie, I love that kinda stuff.
