We got a huge bull moose and this is how we got it out of the woods and how I cared for the trophy moose cape. Watch this moose hunting video to learn how to properly care for it after the shot. You can quarter the moose and bag it for packing it out. Or you can copy what we did to get the moose out whole. We are thrilled Jason and Josh shot this giant bull moose on the first day.

How long does it take to dry out

Flesh it, salt it and hang it. The very next day rub off or shake off the excess salt and put fresh salt on and then hang some more. After about two days of the salt absorbing the blood and moisture from the skin and drip drying the cape should start drying. It will eventually be stiff like a board if done correctly. I like to put it right in the pickling solution or the KROWTANN 2000.

Also it’s vitally important to turn the lips, eyes, ears and nose to rub the salt in those areas.
