An expert on the awkward moments that make us cringe, Melissa Dahl explores what “cringe-worthy” moments really are and what they reveal about human nature. Throughout her talk, she draws on embarrassment-what it is, where it comes from, and how we can use it to improve ourselves. Her conclusions are based on the research of top experts in the field, and her suggestions are worth considering to live an intentional, confident life. An expert on the awkward moments that make us human, Melissa
Dahl will be exploring why and how we “cringe,” and what they
can reveal about our priorities and personalities. Moreover, she
will be discussing what we can learn from these inevitable moments of embarrassment, and new ways to approach them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Just wanted to say “Thank You” for taking the time to put together and deliver this talk. I found your stories entertaining and thought you did an awesome job of putting it all together and making it flow perfectly from start to finish. I got a lot of value out of this - it inspired me to take action toward my dream - and I’m grateful for it and am sending positive energy, love, peace and harmony to you and yours.

True. I think shes talking nonsense. I dont see any reason why people should use feelings of shame instead of guilt and empathie to be a good person.

I am 41 which means gen x, and I do not understand cringe. I understand WHEN people use this expression but I have not felt it. I am hugely self conscious, but I do not care how others percieve me. And the same goes for other people. Let people do and look whatever they want. How is this a problem to me?
@MammaApa

Connecting to the video - of course my past self is always not someone I would like to be again today, no growing person should and noone should stop growing as a person, but I can also see WHY I was like I was and what brought me there and forward to where I am now. It's just history. It doesn't embarrass me.

Yeah I understand social anxiety, but this seems to be people who expect they must always be positive and genuinely enthusiastic about things like office culture and "living life to the fullest"? In addition to people's "old self-concepts" hanging around longer to haunt them media wise, which probably doesn't help. I don't think it's a generational thing, although there's something to be said about a society that pits everyone against another (X v Y?) and yet everyone's still faking it to "get along" when it appears most don't enjoy it? People seem to be primed to blame themselves.
