Loved seeing this video! We switched to floor beds a year ago and there is no looking back. I feel better in the morning, and I love the boho minimalist aesthetic it gives my room. It's also much safer when babies are in bed, as there is no risk of falling off the bed. I love love love the floor bed. We also do a Japanese table because this mama decided wiping down and sweeping under chairs is for the birds 😅

Kia Ora Sarah, so awesome! We are Maori and it is part of mine and my husbands culture to sleep on the floor, especially when staying at a marae here in NZ. When our bed busted we decided to sleep on the floor, what we call marae style, we did this for a year. Then we got a bed but missed sleeping on the floor so went back to sleeping on the floor for three years. We even considered talking to our dear friends (a couple) about investing in a futon as she is Japanese, he is Irish, when my husband who has had severe arthritis since 1992 started to have trouble get up during flare ups, so back to a bed we went. That's not saying there isn't a knack to getting up when sleeping this way, it was only difficult during flareups. I to have issues with sciatica and find it is always more painful when sleeping in a bed then on the floor. We miss the earthiness of it and that feeling of being connected to papatuanuku aka earth mother. We have a single mattress in the lounge to have naps on or for our children and grandchildren to park up or nap on, so that compensates a bit. Good on you and your husband. Enjoy! It's a great way to have a snuggle with the whole whanau/family. Thanks to our culture and marae being in every town and city, it is fairly accepted by non Maori. love your video's and try to watch them all. From Noel(ine)

Thank you so much Noel, for such a beautiful comment and sharing with me about your culture. I was blessed to be a part of a Tangihanga for a dear friend and fell in love with the Māori traditions, I hadn't thought about the floor sleeping until I saw your comment but it makes it even more special. ❤️

I'm super excited to see you transition to floor sleeping too! Most of my family (except for 1 person), sleep on the floor. We love it! I find it gives me a better quality of sleep than a bed. I also have sciatica, and it actually flares at times when I go sleep in a bed somewhere. I think it may help people stay more limber in old age, I've lived in many Asian countries, and have noticed this personally. That being said, it isn't for everyone...my one family member who sleeps in a bed hurts much worse on the floor, due to a health issue. For me, moving to a futon has been an absolute blessing!

Great video. It makes me want to switch back to a traditional Japanese futon. When I took my parents to Japan almost 20 years ago they were worried they wouldn't be able to sleep well on a futon. They ended up having the best sleeps ever. They loved it.

I love this Sarah! We're in the season for a new mattress, and my man often stretches out on the floor for his bad back. This appeals to me 100% ! The morning and evening reset for sleeping and packing up for the day, may be a challenge for me, but deep down, I imagine we would get used to it. This video has very much inspired me, considering I just started reading the book, Goodbye things by Fumio Sasaki, The New Japanese Minimalism. I listened to the whole audio already, and I truly love the whole Japanese Minimalism concept. From watching your videos for a long time now, I picture you and your loved ones already as adopted Japanese Minimalists. Very inspiring for us. Christian greetings to you and your family. 🙏😊

Great video - love the "yoga" 😂 Futons are a great option for renters. Foldable furniture are a renters best option for moving homes. I have recently moved so I am sleeping on my landlord bed. I was thinking about getting a sofa bed for guests until I saw this video - now I am getting a japanese futon. I may sleep on a futon in my next home. I work from home so I love the idea of folding my bed(room) away and turning the room into an office. Just need a folding desk to hide away the office once work is over. I currently use the dining table as my office. Well done Caleb for putting Sarah health first. I love your channel. Keep inspiring people. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪.

Sarah... I think this is wonderful! If my bed frame wasn't literally built-in to my bedroom, I would absolutely do this in a second! Most people sleep terrible when they go camping, but my husband and I sleep on a futon when we camp, and we always sleep way better than at home! We always say we wish we could sleep on the floor in our bedroom. Not to mention the space you gain! I personally love this!!! ❤️ Can't wait to see the kids rooms once they transition over as well.

My sleeping situation is a bit off off the wall. About 4 years ago, each night I would leave the cushy mattress every single night to sleep on the floor. Like you, Sarah, I have Siatica as well, and it is helped alot by a firm surface. My back pain is much less. So what I sleep on now is a frame with a blanket folded in half. It is so comfy. People don't believe me when I say I truly prefer sleeping on a hard surface. Nice video!

I was very curious as to why you would switch out your bed. But after you explain the health benefits, it makes total sense. I understand wanting a firmer surface to sleep on. I used to have a super soft mattress, and I thought it was the greatest thing ever in my 20s. Not so nice the older I got. Now I have a much firmer mattress and my back loves me for it. I’m happy you found a sleeping situation that works for you 💙

My kids used a traditional Japanese futon with the cotton fill for over a year. I loved the space that it gave them! However, their new obsession is having a bunkbed and since we still had their twin mattresses we gave in and let them go back to a traditional bed. Now we use their futons when we travel. My husband and I actually sleep on them now when we stay with his family.

This is so fascinating! I don’t think it would work to air it out as often with the four seasons of the Midwest. Hi Sarah! We are floor sleepers too! I heard about floor sleeping from Katy Bowman, a biomechanist who’s big on keeping your body mobile. All that getting down on the floor and rolling it up is really good for keeping you able to get up and down from the floor! I couldn’t find a local futon option, so I actually got mattress toppers that are a couple inches thick and filled with wool.

I'd love to try a futon, especially since we have recently divided our bedroom to make space for our youngest and he would most definitely profit from us making more space for him. Unfortunately my husband is not on board and our apartment is on the ground level, so our floors are super cold. I'd be afraid of mould because of that... that said, I love the daybed look you opted for. It looks great and neat. :)

I put casters on a piece of plywood, then a mattress on top of that for my son. Futons would have been great, and I'll bet the kids would have loved it, except here in Phoenix...scorpions. Current house doesn't have that issue, we got lucky, but I'm afraid my husband and I would need a winch to get out of bed in the morning. I adore what you've done. It looks so clean and streamlined. I wish you many decades of happy sleeping. Can't wait to see what the kids' rooms look like.

Great video. For the Australian's I'd like to give a shout out to Zentai Living who sell an Australian made futon, manufactured near Byron Bay. Looking at yours when you hang it out, and they're very similar design wise, with the Zentai model being slightly thicker (10cm). I've combined their double bed sized cotton (no additional wool layer) with an Ikea zip cover and it's perfect.

We love our Japanese style futon too! I'm really happy to see another Aussie who doesn't mind sleeping on the floor (we have confused and confounded real estate agents during inspections on a few occasions...lol....especially when we had enough wardrobe space to pop it away in there before their inspection). We've been using our futon for coming up on 7 years, and if we have to stay overnight at family's house or a hotel etc. we can totally feel the difference in our backs...my hubby has been known to discreetly sleep on a family members floor beside the bed and then pop the pillow and sheet back on the bed in the morning ;). We loved our futons so much that when we were moving back home to Australia from Europe we actually folded our futons up and put them in a large suitcase as checked luggage (totally worth giving up some of our family of 5's baggage allowance for!). Our futon was made in the UK (where we were living) and uses all natural fibres - layers of wool and cotton. Not sure if RU-vid will flag me for sharing a link, but anyone in the UK looking for a locally made, reasonably priced futon made from natural fibres do a quick search for the 'Monk Futon Bed Roll' made in Devon by futons247. We've had this futon for over 6 years and it's still going strong. The downside for me is that moving the double futon out into the sunshine can be a bit exhausting, I have Fibromyalgia and on a bad day it feels like a mammoth task getting it out there. I find folding the futon in half and then quarters, hoisting it into my arms, carrying it outside and then unfolding onto the railing I'm sunning it on is the best way to manage this slightly cumbersome package. Of course my hubby doesn't struggle to move the futon out at all (being a foot taller than I), so that's always an option too. A quick note on kids and futons. Unfortunately we have lost two futons over the years (same monk futon but in the single size) because the kids weren't careful to roll it up every morning, and didn't keep up with hanging it out to sun and air when needed. They were teenagers at the time, and I've never been as good at keeping on top of house work and daily routines as you Sarah, so I'm sure you and your kids won't have this problem :) Just thought I'd mention it in case there are other Mums that are a bit more chaotic who will find it super stressful having to remember to get the kids to hang out their futons every few days. Additionally, teen boys sweat more than younger ones, lol....so I guess we were already at a disadvantage there! In our humid sub tropical weather here in QLD mould can get into anything so easily as you know....so once the mould was in the kids futons, they had to be thrown out (heartbreaking!). Oh and I'm sure it's obvious, but thought I'd mention it anyways, but if there's a sickness going through the house, in particular a fever breaking and causing people to sweat more than usual, then the futon can get visibly soggy (or any mattress...but might just not be as obvious on a traditional western bed).

I love the idea about sleeping in futons on the floor. When I was a toddler I used to fall out from the bed, this don't happen anymore but having more space to sleep is so wonderful. If my bed is on the wall side, I'll always hurt myself. I think after moving out I will definitely buy a futon probably 2mx2m and later one extra 2mx1m for guest. If placed togehter I could have 2m for myself and my partner 1m. I like the idea of having more space while sleeping since I like to roll around in the bed.

I know you have lots of comments on this video, so if you don’t get to mine, I am not offended :) We are pregnant with baby number 3, I have always put the baby/ toddler’s mattresses on the floor. That way I can lay next to them and nurse and then just slip away back to my bed without having to try and lay them down. I am intrigued by the futon mattress because it is thin, and would be easier for a baby to get on and off of. I haven’t found a local place that I can go lay on a futon mattress and feel it, so my question is: do you feel like it is breathable enough for it to be safe for a baby? In the US our mattresses have springs in them, so there is lots of airflow in the mattress. Do you feel like a futon mattress would be a suffocation hazard for a baby?
@SmallChanges

Hi Emma, Congratulations on your newest blessing ❤️I wish I had a futon when I still had babies. In Japan it is common to sleep with babies on a futon, as they are firm and made of all natural fibres. I love the idea of a floor bed, we even kept our mattress on the floor for a while. But where I live we have brown recluse spiders and they love hiding in things on the floor so for now we're sticking with a traditional bed.

That seems like a wise idea Amanda ❤️

You could put some ply on a low bed frame and tatami mats on top. If that’s too hard add a foam topper on that.

I love the aesthetic of Japanese bedrooms. I would consider it, but I don't think my hubby is down with that. I wonder if your hips hurt when you lie on your side because it goes through the mattress to the hard floor?
@SmallChanges

I was worried about that as I am a side sleeper but I have found it so much more comfortable and keeps my hips in alignment ❤️

We have dust/dust mite/dust mite dung allergies so being down on the floor with these 3 things won't work for our family. I guess the Japense don't have carpet which may help.

We slept on a shikibuton for a while. The problem is that here in Canada in the winter, the floor and lower portion of the room is cold. Unless you have in-floor heating. We have forced air, gas heat, so the heat rises in the room and the bottom couple of feet are too cold for me. Good luck with your sleeping adventure! Do you get very many floor crawling insects?
