There are some items for the wardrobe that you are always better off buying new! But then there are others where buying new is a complete waste of money, and those are the items I’m going to be talking about today! I hope you can learn from my fashion mistakes and make better fashion choices going forward so you can save yourself some money in the long run!

I've always wondered why modern Levi's never look as flattering as the ones people wore in movies and other media throughout the 20th century. Two examples from the 1950s that come to mind are Marilyn Monroe, who wore 701's (a different cut, I know), and they looked great, and Marlon Brando with his pair in The Wild One. Shoutout to Den in Denim for all your Levi's history needs-except for this lower pocket change, surprisingly. Maybe I just missed the video where he talked about it. But now it all makes sense. Completely agree on everything expect for the vintage military stuff. From my experience owning a WW2 na1 deck jacket and a Vietnam era MA1 Bomber & OG107 those pieces are amazing but are much more delicate than they were when they were made 60-80 years ago. Over time they aged amazingly but the cotton starts to dry rot and the pant fabric became really thin from repeated wash. I look at it as a vintage car; love having it and being able to drive it but I want a modern alternative for a daily. Obviously a personal option. Appreciate the consistent thoughtful content

The bad thing for me is that, since I live in a small town, there are no thrift shops around. Even in bigger cities, it's very hard to find thrift shops with good quality garments. My only option is purchasing online, with the risk that the item is not in a good condition. Italy is definitely the worst place to look for second hand/vintage clothing shops.

Where I live it’s the same but I have places an hour away. Online is your best bet if you don’t have thrift stores close to you. You can find anything online

I'm in the same situation. I live in a suburb of Birmingham and people generally donate clothes to charity shops when someone dies. If you are on the lookout for brown, C&A acrylic cardigans they've got you covered. Leather jackets, not so much.

I wear my dads old belts he got from the state that was just cut to size when you bought them you would pick out the belt and then they would cut it to your size back from the 80s/90s and there still good to go today

hot take - skinny jeans becoming a trend in the 2000's and 2010's was never going to stick. a lot of people wore the sized down 501's and 505's decades ago. Skinny jeans wasn't a new concept. But after the back pocket being moved, the 2000's shift to more low-rise denim instead of vintage higher waist, and lower quality materials...it was all destined to be bad lol. So when they're super slim with a vintage pair, they just *work*

as someone who’s spent countless hours trying to find the right vintage detroit jacket for me, it’s just not worth the effort. carhartt WIP has just re-released the OG winter detroit jacket on their website. it’s £230, which is honestly lower than most of the vintage detroits that i’ve looked for. not to mention the fact that you’ll pretty much only find them in ridiculously large sizes, or they are completely frayed and half destroyed. if they aren’t one or both of these things, they’re about £400. while the quality of a vintage jacket is definitely better, it’s just not worth it. either buy fake or just get the WIP one, it is significantly easier than finding a good real vintage jacket in the right size and in decent condition.

Id add wool items. New wool items are lesser quality and expensive but older stuff is pretty nice. Only thing to worry about is the cut and any holes and maybe smell. Older wool coats are def roomier and boxier ime. Mil surp in the more civilian solid color casual wear style are kinda drying up now. And its much more modern camo stuff.

Don't overlook purchasing new items from the original manufacturer when they have exceptional sales having additional discounts on their already closeout items (available on limited sizes stocks). These short term additional discount special sales are usually only on US labor day and "black Friday". This last Labor Day I bought quit3 a few top quality original garments for approximately 10%-20% of their list prices. These very desirable items normally are priced at between 30%-50% on used and secondary/irrgulars markets.

Yellow pit stains can generally be washed out of T shirts and shirt collars by soaking in sodium percarbonate (the active ingredient of Oxyclean) in very hot water and also using Alconox enzymatic detergent (very effective for biologic/protein stains such as sweat or blood, apply sparingly because it is fairly expensive).

I think most underwear sold at thrift stores is new, just donated or extra stock, but still in original packaging. I get a lot of my undies from there, and while the selection isn’t as great as online, it is better than Walmart and a lot of basic clothes stores

I would also like to add, expensive resoleable shoes and boots (i.e. Allen Edmonds). They will just about last forever and there's really no need to spend $300-500 on a new pair when you can get a lightly worn pair for sub $100.

Random question but why do British people (and I am too and I also do this) pronounce Ralph Lauren as "Ralph Le-REN"? It's an American brand not a French one, and in America they pronounce it "Lauren" like the girls' name. Where did this come from? Why do we give it this quasi-French pronunciation? can kind of see why we mispronounce Nike, but Lauren is a fairly common girls' name in the UK too, it's not like it's an unfamiliar thing to pronounce.

I half agree with levi's jeans. Theres so many different models and revisions from the years that if you go to a thrift store I find you have no idea how theyll fit based on model number or size. Im usually a 32 waist and Ill find a pair of 517 levis at the thrift tagged size 37 and theyll barely fit me in the waist and be too tight in the thigh... Or ill find some 505s in my size with a skinny leg somehow. I actually have been buying new levis from their webstore and they all have fit as intended.

Yeah, the old fits are all smaller in the waist than they say. Most online stores and places like eBay measure them out for you so you know if they will fit or not

There’s also a difference between 45$ Levis and Levis Premium. That’s where you get into the 100$+ range, but the quality in hardware, leather patch, cotton, and stitching is far superior.

If you do want to buy new jeans that fit like old Levi's then get a pair of wrangler cowboy cut jeans. They are perfect, and waaaaaay cheaper then you will even find with vintage Levi's.

I got a couple of Levi's at a thrift store around here that actually fit perfect so I had the idea of visiting a Levi's store, selection here is absolutely terrible cuz they basically only had 501s, trend I suppose, but those don't fit me whatsoever, such a letdown.

More curated vintage stores I guess. Some people call those expensive, but in my experience they're still cheaper than H&M or Zara, but you get actual quality for that price.

I disagree on leather jackets, yeah if you want a good worn look right now then sure go vintage. But if you want something of your own that'll look amazing in 5-10+ years then buy a new one. Only if you want to be that dashing old guy in his awesome jacket that makes it look like you have stories to tell, something that if you pass away and a family member gets it they feel like a part of you is with them at all times. But if you wanna be trendy and cant buy something knowing it will pay off in the long run then vintage is fine. Edit because i just finished that section. Yes your vintage jacket will have some character to it, but it will be someone else's character, i prefer to embed my own character into my clothing.
