Have you ever played Quake 2? Note: At 6:53 In the video, I mentioned that Quake 2 was the first game to feature the BFG, but that is incorrect. Every DOOM game prior to Quake 2 already included the BFG. However, Quake 2's version of the BFG was the first to feature tendrils, making it behave quite differently compared to the one featured in the classic DOOM games. My apologies for the mistake! Get Quake 2: GOG: www.gog.com/en/game/quake_ii_quad_damage Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/2320/Quake_II/
AKSHUALLY, the way Doom handled the BFG damage through ray casts could technically be considered "Tendrils" *Snort*. :') Nah I'm just kidding. When I heard that line, I thought about it and concluded you probably meant the BFG's first appearance in Quake. It's worth pointing out that, in some ways, Quake 2's level structure is the mid-point evolution from Quake 1 and Doom's individual self contained levels to Half-Life's more or less continuous experience start to finish.
Hah, 10/10 comment. Also yeah I've never thought of Q2's level design like that, it does feel like a bit of a stop-gap between older id games and stuff like Half-Life and Halo.
I used to put in 12+ hour Q2 multiplayer sessions on a regular basis when I was young. To the point where I would feel physically ill but I always played again the next days. It was and still is my all time favorite game even after all these years.
1st guinness world record for the longest gaming session was done by my friend. We played over 30hours of q2 CTF and q2dm1 FFA. I felt real bad for almost a week after that :)))
Still better than 99% of modern releases. Been playing this game my whole life and wont stop any time soon lol You need to try the VR mod for this. It gets so damn intense. Same fir the Q1 VR mod
@@scatered1 it’s an easy install tbh. Idk if you have a headset, but let me tell you, it really puts the size of the enemies into a while new perspective when you realize how much some of them tower over you and you actually have to dodge lmao Both games had me doing gymnastics. Pretty similar experience fighting the Imps in Doom 3 VR. Those fireballs are faster than I realized haha
Great review!, in fact before the remaster is released im inlove for quake 2 and i love it even better than half life, and YES CALL OF THE MACHINE IS AN EXPANSION WORTH OF PRAISE! and its free! Developers like arcane and god forbid 343 should learn there lesson from this remaster on how to preserve a game and make there fans happy with no scam like battle passes and day one patches, honestly games dies because of them but with games like Quake 1 and 2 enhanced games lives on as an enjoyable artform and pastime.
Thanks! You hit the nail on the head. So many game companies just see a remaster as a chance at an easy cash grab so they just put it out with zero effort. Sure the quake remasters are simple, old games but they’re awesome versions of those games with great new content.
The Quake 2 mod community was probably one of the most amazing ones a game has ever had. I feel so old when I get frustrated saying new games are so corporate because they own all the servers, they make all the mods/alt modes, they make all the skins, they run the competition leagues/ladders. It's truly commercialized to the max. Quake 2 is the epitome of showcasing how a community ran structure will have worlds more depth than any corporation thinks they can innovate on their own. I loved the idea of gaming making it big and in the spotlight of competition. But, it's almost too cliche how much of a turn off it becomes from its grass roots. Nothing like messaging a clan in 1998 to issue a challenge, communicating two servers to play on, submitting demos. It felt so good to be a part of.
I like Quake II but I remember being very annoyed when I first played it in 2000. I was expecting to begin the game with a Shotgun like in Quake I so not starting with one was not a good thing in my opinion. I think this was the first time I played a game in an FPS series where you started with a different gun in the second game. And worse on my first run I somehow missed the Shotgun in the opening area and didn't find one until the Comm Center. Meaning I had nothing but the Blaster until I found the Machine Gun in the Installation. After a friend showed me the first Shotgun's location I memorized it so I never missed it again Quake II 64 was fun and its nice that they follow the example of the original expansions and start the player near a Shotgun so they can grab it before engaging the enemy. I played through the original game, the new expansion and Quake II 64 last week.
Oh man that sucks! Yeah the starting blaster is awful. The standard shotgun isn't great either so they definitely could have made it the starting weapon.
I played it when it came out. Bought my first 3d card (a 3dfx voodoo 2) for it. Game ran with 3d shading on a massive 1024x768 resolution. I had friends spend days at my place just watching the graphics. Good times.
So a handful of key differences: - Turrets in Ground Zero got a HUGE nerf compared to vanilla turrets. For starters, their movement prediction AI has been toned down and so was their firing rate, and also you can see where they are aiming at the moment. But most important, their health has also been nerfed, and now you can destroy them with just one rocket / railgun shot, both of which are more effective than shooting them with guns. - The items in the Quake 2 64 campaign don't work like in the normal campaign, they are just like in Q1 instead. - The gib system has been vastly updated in the remastered, now enemies have their own uniques gibs (with the exception of one PSX enemy included in the new campaign) - While the new AI is a nice touch, it can totally change some encounters for the worse by making them either way easier or way harder than it should be. - They unfortunately nerfed the Railgun dmg for single player.
Thank you for these précisions. I played Quake 2 for the first time on the Nightdive release and enjoyed Ground Zero. I read before playing it that it was not liked, but playing it I thought it was a blast! Nightdive tweeked it, obviously, and that's very good new. So if you didn't enjoy Ground Zero before, try it again, I think it's worth it, on par with Reckoning.
I own Quake and Quake II, including the remastered and enhanced versions, thru gog (no DRM). For years I played them on Linux via Dark Places (Quake) and Yamagi (Quake 2), but enjoy their new versions while booted into Windows. Same with the Enhanced Doom and Doom 2, though the Project Brutality mod keeps me firing up ZDoom.
Little late here with this, but the turrets were MUCH more dangerous in the original release of Ground Zero. They had more hps and their attacks were more powerful.
The idea of the turret isn't bad but... yea, fuk them :) So glad they did this remaster, now I might be able to drag my friends into playing. Before the multiplayer wasn't really That reliable so they were eager to give up. Game is older than them so they were biased. Maybe now, maybe...
“AI enhancement”? At 1998 you could copy one file from original Ground Zero to original Quake 2 folder and get a same result. Lol. They simply took an AI from an old mission pack.
The monsters have better terrain tracking. Basically, they used the technology they created to make a compass and used then on the monsters to give them an improved path tracing. In a nutshell, monsters are quite capable to follow you across the whole level, stuff got nerfed, stuff got buffed, but the path tracing is a great addition.
While Quake 2's design and atmosphere might be "generic" (even if that's a very vague and pointless word) I feel like it definitely improved upon the original Quakes appearance by not having almost every level have a brown and grey color scheme. Then I played the Reckoning and it through that completely out the indow by having almost every level have an as you said, olive oil yellow and grey color scheme. Uts definitely not bad but I agree that its a bit if a devolution of what made Quake visually better thab the original game in some ways, even if they arent related.
I am not a big fan of "Doom" shooters. I am a big fan of Powerslave/Exhumed, because it had an exploration and adventure feel, instead of frantic action. I never played any of the Quake games. Having in mind what I've said, would you recommend me this game? All the videos I've seen look awesome, but I am not interested in just crazy action, it's boring to me.
Hah no worries. Yeah I know that's the actual name for it but bunny hopping is a more universally recognized term so I just went with that. Thanks for the informative comment!
Yes, and if you had Quake II before the release of this remaster, it will be upgraded to the remaster version for free (and also you can keep playing the original version).
