Being able to predict where the tennis ball is going to cross the net is one of the most important skills a doubles player can develop, because then you'll know when to poach and when to cover the alley.
Good doubles players use "tells" to anticipate where the tennis ball is going so they can get easy put-away volleys and overheads. In this video, Martina Navratilova shares her favorite poaching tell, while Gigi Fernandez shares her favorite tell for when to cover the alley.

So many players do not appreciate the benefits of serving into the body or moving your service around. As a baseball pitcher I learned the importance of moving my pitch around the strike zone remembering what batters liked and didn’t like. This application really works in tennis. As a serve and volley player I pay close attention to how and where opponents hit returns. Doubles is definitely like a chess match that requires anticipation especially at the higher skill levels.

Base on my personal experience as a 3.5 player, both tells hardly apply to club players as they often set their mind on where to hit the return before the serve no matter where the ball lands. On top of that, due to lack of control, the actual direction of the return can be much different than where they wanted it to go. Just based on my own experience.

So you mean they just miss dramatically and you win the point anyway? Body serves get returned in these places not because players wish them to but because the swing paths take them in these directions.

In club play I rarely see a right-hander move to the center on the add side to return a ball using a backhand. Most of the time they position towards the left side of the service box to hit a forehand. It does leave the serve up the middle open but club players aren't going to execute that serve very often.

Just say net person needs to cheat/move/lean the same direction as the returner's movement as the return most likely going to get pulled in the same direction.

All this information is good as far as it goes but club players generally don’t hit with the same skill level as pros at the US open we are more likely to spray the ball anywhere on the court on a serve return making it difficult to com to poach just be Cathy returner moved to the right to take it on his or her backhand.
@rsmith02
@rsmith02 2 года назад
Work on your netplay and watch the returner closely- this works from 3.0 to 4.5 at least (I don't play higher level players than that regularly). Good serves limit where returns go and at the net you can take advantage of it!
@seetheforestthroughthetrees
Great video. Higher-level doubles is definitely about strategy. I notice when I am hit with high pace body serves that is what happens with my returns. But, I never really looked for that when I am at the net. I will now be looking to move in the direction the player's body goes because they would have to go against their swing path to hit in the opposite direction. Of course this only works on a body serve correct?
