You Shouldn't Worry about BJJ Stripes (But We All Have Problems)

Just a simple thought on my way to the gym on a Friday morning.
I love the interaction that the Chewjitsu channel has. But I dislike people being negative towards others and their particular problems.
If you have the urge to talk negatively about someone else's problems. I urge you to stop for just a moment and look inward to see what kind of problems you have.
Spewing negativity is a poison that inflicts both parties.
Outwardly expressing positivity is a medicine that helps both parties.
Life can be a miserable endeavor or an awesome one. It can be full of problems and difficulties or beautiful adventures. The choice is yours.
Be someone who helps build up others rather than tear people down.

I was so proud of my first stripe on my white belt. My first martial arts achievement. I know you're "not supposed to care" about the belts, but obviously everyone does, otherwise there wouldn't be belts. IMO, if you want to prove to yourself that you can achieve something, it's okay to have the belt as a part of your motivation. Besides, you can't fool anybody on the mat, belt, stripes, or otherwise XD

Great video! I can tell this is something straight from the heart and a dear subject to you. This is a great life lesson for any field. I've struggled with depression/anxiety my whole life. For a long time I've been one of those negative people you mentioned, a pessimist if you will. The last few years I've been fighting it as hard as I can. I've put forth a monumental effort to reclaim my personal strength and power and to create a more positive outlook on life. I've been doing a lot better recently. I still have days where I feel very negative but I keep that shit locked down tight inside and I don't allow it to affect my actions or the words that I use when speaking to others. It's slowly getting easier but some days are still a struggle. Thanks for everything you do Chewy, love the videos and I love your attitude toward life and jiu jitsu. Such good points, there's a guy at our gym that has lots of health problems, like Crohn's, joint issues and all that but even with it he's the most positive guy and it's a joy to roll and train with him. However there's a guy who barely trains and when he does his cardio is just abysmal and he spars with you like he's trying to kill you, then he tires out and just stops sparring for that day, when we drill he just stops mid drill to go to the toilet and just leaves you on the mat for like 5 mins in the middle of class. The energy each person has definitely makes you want to either stay with them or avoid them. And the comparison side of things, it's definitely hard to get over because we have a guy who's a two stripe white belt but he's probably the worst guy in terms of technique in our whole gym and when you spar with him it's hard to get past that when there's other guys who don't get stripes and are phenoms. It just makes you feel like the people doing well aren't being recognised and it's just about the time you put in rather than your skill level which can be demoralizing.

I understand you. A stripe doesn't magically make you better at BJJ, but if you are better at BJJ you are worthy of a stripe. For someone who is new to BJJ, it is nice to have some external validation to reinforce that you are indeed making progress. And it works as _a rule of thumb_ for skill levels. Although I think from purple belt onward stripes as motivation shouldn't be required. And stripes as a intermediate grading system of ability doesn't work because an individual's style takes more form and can tip the balance more than a little bit more or less skill.

Man I had a problem the other day when I was rolling. I was rolling with an ammy MMA fighter and he just went ham. He was coming after me balls to the wall and I’m young and in good shape so I’m also pretty formidable. So while he’s trying to double leg me I’m trying to get my leg out and play defense because it’s too late to sprawl and when that happens he catches my knee in his balls because he was trying to drive into me I notice this and kind of pause and say “Hey man you okay?” He doesn’t respond and he keeps trying to take my head off so I held guard and took his back and then before I subbed him he gets all mad and says “Yeah man you fucked me up.” Then he storms off the mat and I apologize to him multiple times but he says nothing to me. Kinda relates to this video in that you need a really negative mindset to act that way. I don’t get pissed off when I get hurt. Hell I laughs it off if my nads take a good clobbering.

How should higher belts roll against lower belts? Rolling against my coach always resulted in me losing. No complaints there because I don't want to be "gifted" a win, I want to earn it. The problem is that if the end result is always a failure I (as a naive white belt) can't tell if ANY of my steps were the right ones. I would never know if something didn't work because I made the wrong move, or because he made the right counter move. Other than telling them what moves to make, critiquing what moves they made, and/or gifting a win to the rolling partner, in what ways can a higher ranked person assist a lower ranked person during a roll?

Talk to your instructors they're ,there to help at least that's what they're supposed to do!
@bane3991
@bane3991 5 лет назад
There's nothing wrong with being gifted a win. They sometimes let you get into dominant positions just to show you what it feels like. Also, they want to take it easy because destroying you all the time is not helping you and it's not helping them. Of course you need it but for it to happen all the time is annoying. The answer to your question is that you need to roll with people your skill level and people who are worse than you. Than you'll know if your techniques are coming along well. I ran into this problem as well because I was only rolling with high ranks so I had no idea whether or not I was progressing. Because either they would kill me or they would let me get position. Just because they kill you doesn't mean you aren't getting better because a purple will destroy you whether you're a 2 stripe white or just got your blue. But obviously there's a gigantic skill difference between 2 stripe white and a blue.
@jstar6543
@jstar6543 5 лет назад
@@bane3991 nothing wrong with being gifted a win? highly controversial, tell that to a boxer or wrestler! when you're given anything by a black belt or a senior instructor ,he is not giving you anything he is allowing you to work! And unless you're in competition there is no win or victory in a roll with a classmate the only win or Victory you both receive is the knowledge that you gain from your techniques in your roll and the safety you use to make sure your partner nor you gets hurt
@bane3991
@bane3991 5 лет назад
J Star, It's not a competition though. I've rolled with higher ranks who destroy me and I rolled with higher ranks who take it easy and let me get things. When a new guy comes in I won't kill them. I'll let them get familiar with the dominant positions. I'll also just randomly sweep them or put them in a bad spot to show them what it feels like to be there; sometimes I'll tap them right away but a lot of times I let them stay there so they practice their basics such as hip escapes. I guess it depends on who you talk to but this method makes a lot more sense to me. If I didn't have higher belts doing that with me I would be totally lost and unfamiliar with the dominant positions. And hip escapes would have been impossible if they were to just tap me right away. Because when you're new these techniques feel like they don't work. So you need to let them hit moves on you so they get the feel. If you just destroy them 24/7, it won't do them any good. It's good to do every now and then so they know there's another level of jiu jitsu and for many other reasons. I think it's good to have a balance of upper belts taking it easy on you and guiding you a bit, and the upper belts who destroy you.

Chew. I am a white belt and I started about a month ago. I have been going to gi fundamentals the most, but have taken no gi too. My gi coach is awesome and I really like him, but when we roll, he doesn't teach and proceeds to submit me, even though he keeps getting me into the same positions. I understand that its apart of the process, however when rolling with other people, they notice and teach me escapes. Does my coach just want me to keep coming back so I can finally learn? Or does he not want to give me lessons that he cant teach the whole class? It doesn't frustrate me or anything, just curious about the coaching aspect. I mean I like watching videos about it, but it's not the same as when training. Anyones insight is helpful.

Good attitude, I personally like It this video. It really won’t require D.Sc. degree to understand a basic human mentality. Higher educated BBJ playe well do good enoughr 😊. # Fuck the stripes.. Regards from Finland

My dad is putting me and my brother in BJJ class and I'm gonna be new to it. Any thing I should know or do? I'm kind of scared to do it and I don't like being bare foot.

You'll get used to the bare foot part, probably by the end of your first class. It requires a lot of cardio too, you probably won't even survive the warm up(depending what academy you train at). It's intimidating just like anything else you do the first time. But as long as it's a good school with a good environment, you'll be fine. If the upper ranks are kicking your ass the first day than you might want to quit because that's just bullying. As for some tips it depends on your knowledge of grappling. The first things you should focus on is shrimping to regain guard. Don't let people get grips on you, work on breaking grips as best as you can. Work on those 2 things at first. Just focus on that. You can try other things but if you don't have that than you'll have a tough time rolling.

About the bare foot thing..there's a reason why I don't want to be bare foot and it makes me feel embarrassed and/or ashamed about it.

I have a little fung on my toe and I wouldn't want people looking at my toes and think I don't take care of my feet. ://

Negativity is a lot like masturbation. It might make you feel good at the time, but ultimately it produces nothing but a mess.

Hey Chewy,thanks. Positive thinking is good ,but not enough. What should be emphasized is taking action on the messages that lady is recieving. Why is she taking jiu jitsu.What are the reasons.Is the gym she in the right one. Rather on having to give her pep talk,in what way can we respect on what she is feeling and make adjustments,either mentally or physically. Whether it comes from her or us.

Thank you for this video . As an epileptic there is no reason for strips ( no offense to the sport ) but it takes two colors to make purple so I might honestly never genuinely earn a purple belt ! In my eyes " You might make me tap but I will never submit !
