"you wouldn't want to get shot by this" The standard that all ammunition and calibers can easily meet.
@cutlerylover

ok let me re phrase that if you had to get shot in the same spot with this or say a FMJ or another hollowpoint what would you prefer?
@SpaceFrawg

cutlerylover I look for ammo that hits hard, expands reliably, has good penetration, and retains bullet weight... this stuff looks like it is designed to fail on at least one of those points (retains bullet weight) without disagreement. I think it's fancy crap, a gimmick. Better than FMJ ? Possibly, but not by much.

In nearly 40 years of my life now I have been a very avid hunter of and have killed a multitude of wild game from the tiny to the monsterous, shot in numerous types of competition, avid reloader of ammo,and about any other gun related thing you can think of and I have seen more than I can count of these fad products come and go through the years, some are good but most are just that, gimmicks and nothing more, want the sure bet, just stay with a good quality time proven standby and save your money for target ammo to shoot ALOT and just get damn good with what you chose to carry, you will get far better mileage from that than any number of gimickie bullshit like those rounds.

These rounds were used by a restaurant owner in Montebello ca during an attempted robbery at the end of the business day. Two suspects died. Yes they work. This Happened approximately year and half ago. The gun store who sold him the gun and rounds confirmed it.

I worked at a gun store that was the first authorized dealer in my area. An emt had come in and was telling us about a person who had been shot with this ammo, his quote was this was the most devastating gunshot wound he and his crew had ever seen. There was nothing they could do besides stuff the wound. The guy bought 3 boxes of 3 different calibers for his guns.

about the death row inmate's bodies... back in the early 1900s the US military department wanted the replace the .38 colt revolver round, so they actually tested the possible replacements on medical cadavers and deemed that they needed a .45 and they went back to the .45lc and in 1910 they adopted the the .45acp and a year later they adopted the m1911 pistol.

if your testing if it cycles, make sure you test having them alternating too if that's how your going to carry, I'm sure there's a difference in recoil between the two, and it would be interesting to see if it holds the same aim in the same gun, I feel like at different ranges where the bullet is going to hit will be very different between the two.

critical duty is designed for full sized service guns ie 4-5 inch barrels. has a heavier projectile. and harder lead for better barrier penetration, and is a +p load. critical defense is designed for carry guns. ie sub 4in barrel. has a lighter projectile, and softer lead to allow for full expansion at the lower velocity of the short barrel. and is a standard pressure round critical duty *can* over penetrate when fired from a compact gun due to the lower velocity of the short barrel not allowing for the hollow point made of harder lead to fully open resulting in deeper penetration. however the penetration depth tends to be around 18-20 inches from what ive seen. so its far from something like a ball round or an xtreme penetrator. know your gun AND your ammo. not all ammo is created equally and alot of leo rounds are designed for full sized guns with full sized barrels and will not perform as well in compact carry guns. and there are carry guns out there with 4 inch barrels. so if your dead set on a particular type of ammo and its designed for a full sized barrel length. find a gun that matches that barrel length

Stopping the target through pain and tendon damage is the best solution to keeping you safe. Rip ammo does this the best. Moving your arm after getting hit in the shoulder with a rip round would be near impossible while with hollow points that guy might still be able to lift his arm. Getting hit in the chest by a rip round would create a bigger region of pain immediately helping nuetrualize the target as fast as modernly possible. Rip rounds are best for protecting your life but not your property. Be more responsible and defensive, then rip rounds should treat you best
@timrobinson6573

It looks like youve got Golden Saber in your mags Jeff, is it the newer bonded stuff? Ive seen a lot of inconsistent results in tests and the jacket almost always separates or it doesnt expand or penetrate that well (mostly in 380). I use Underwood Hollow Points in my Sig P238. The Xtreme Penetrator stuff is awesome but doesnt cycle reliably in my Sig.

The Tactical 6 String Speaking of hollow points not expanding sometimes, Winchester's PDX1 had that problem sometimes. Since then, they've increased the petals from 6 to 8 to address the problem, in .45 ACP anyways. Expensive ammo though, for similar performance to the others in its class.

I stopped when you actually said it works like a hole saw. the average human is about 15 inches front to back. A 9mm has a 1 in a 9.84 twist or a least the glock 19 on the table you have does. Saying that if the bullet stayed together it would turn 1 and 1/2 times in the width of your body, hardly a hole saw. But thats a moot point since the trocars, which by themselves weight less than a .177 cal pellet brake off within the first inch so in reality it will be physically impossible for them to act like a hole saw. they will make one hell of a superficial wound. But in the end what you have is 7 trocars that most got stopped by your ribs and a 380 wad cutter. Whoever pays $ 30 for a box of these knows shit about terminal ballistics.
@TheRantinghick
@TheRantinghick 8 лет назад
Its one of those engineer things that works great on paper, but not so much in the real world. I wasn't aware hydrashoks and hollow points needed much improvement. If you want penetration just use FMJ's. It doesnt matter a whole lot, keep making holes till the threat is gone. The bad guy won't know if the bullets cost 5 dollars a piece or .20 and it doesn't matter much in the long run. Carry whatever rounds work well in your gun and don't worry so much about how much ''damage'' your gonna do per round. Any modern made round will kill, period. Shot placement is key regardless of the round. Short of that more holes equals more blood loss equals more likely to die. Gel doesn't replicate a body, its just a consistent medium to test rounds for comparison. Something that goes 14in into a block of gel isn't going 14in into a person.
@lookback2472
@lookback2472 8 лет назад
Sounds like you have never hunted before or seen ballistic gel shot with different ammo, fmj's do no where near the damage of a hollow point especially if it's a good mushrooming hollow point. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't want to be shot with a fmj but I would rather take out the threat much quicker and not have to worry about putting several rounds into him.
@lookback2472
@lookback2472 8 лет назад
And most gel test are to see the wound channel of the bullet or how much damage each one does and if you use the right gel it simulates a human body pretty closely.
@TheRantinghick
@TheRantinghick 8 лет назад
Look Back I have hunted and a FMJ will kill you just the same as hollow point and no gel does not simulate a body. Its a test medium you twit. Its made to be consistent not a simulation of a body. It doesn't show how a bullet reacts with bone or varying density of flesh as you find in a living thing. Yes a hollow point is better, but its not like the fmj isnt gonna kill you any less. Dead is dead. Your talking about the difference of seconds with a person before shock sets in and no one is gonna shake off a few FMJs Especially at close range ware most self defense shootings happen, many times a HP doesn't expand. Maybe read some medical reports some time. Shooting an animal from distance with a rifle using one round and shooting a person up close with a hand gun aren't even comparable.
@TheRantinghick
@TheRantinghick 8 лет назад
Its a fairly close approximation of tissue depending on the mix. Its hardly a ''simulation'' of a body.
@franktheweinerburke
@franktheweinerburke 8 лет назад
+Look Back comparing rifle rounds to pistol rounds and their efficacy of wounding is pointless. a FMJ rifle round will likely still deform, tumble, wound via hydraulic expansion, etc. a pistol round wounds by damaging the tissue it contacts, and that's really all they do. to paint with a broad brush, you want to make the bullet to expand as wide as possible, to be as sharp as possible, and go as deep as possible. of course there's tradeoffs that have to be made. ballistics gel was never intended to directly simulate the human body. rounds that meet the FBI standards using ballistics gel have been shown to be very effective in actual shootings, the idea was never to imply that a round that penetrated 16" of gel would penetrate 16" of person. of course now there's rounds out that were designed to perform well in gel yet perform poorly in human tissue.

@BuffaloWarrior7
@BuffaloWarrior7 8 лет назад
It's a gimmick. In ballistic gel tests it looks like it's got good penetration. But when fired into a pig carcass the trocars get stuck in the rib-cadge and don't actually do much damage. A traditional hollow point works much better in more realistic situations. Ballistic gel only mimics muscle not bone and cartilage. While it might cause damage those little flechettes aren't going to stop someone in there tracks, just cause a pain in the ass in the ER. Get some pig carcasses cloth-em then light em up and butcher. Put the RIP round to bed.

Once one has decided to kill, its best to be whole-heartedly decided and committed. If and when the unfortunate event arises, hesitation might get you killed. Jeff's viewers are most likely not offended by him talking about terminal wound ballistics in human bodies, perpetrator's bodies more specifically. It'd be cool if people could donate their bodies to ballistics testing. One question tho...live testing or post-mortem?

FYI- everyone on RU-vid is an expert. But after owning firearms and training for the last 22years, I'm going to offer my .02c. Take it with a grain of salt, and do your own research to corroborate or dismiss my suggestions. But just know it comes from a VERY EXPERIENCED perspective. 2 things- .380 ammo has always been considered a poor self defense round because modern jhp rounds typically don't meet FBI penetration requirements. Typically, only ball ammo will penetrate deeply enough but won't provide a suitable wound channel. Lehigh defense's xtreme penetrator rounds (you may have heard of them), is truly a game changer. And when I say game changer, I mean it, and without any hype. Underwood is now loading the projectiles for LD and they really are equivalent to a +P round (380 isn't sammi speced). There are plenty of reviews in print and YT to corroborate this. Do yourself a favor, buy some and test it (no good in 9mm for over penetration) CONT..

The trocars don't spread on impact with a hard surface. It's only when something soft like flesh or liquid is impacted that makes them spread and break off. They fill the hole in the center and that pressure from the center pushes outward, which spreads the trocars. They are insanely destructive. That's why they're called Radically Invasive Projectile/RIP the same company also makes one called civic duty which looks the same, but the trocars are made to spread out but not break off. It essentially expands out to almost 3 times the original size in a flower shape. Also a deadly round. They're also made of solid copper, no lead at all. The lighter weight gives them a higher speed

4 years later here is my follow up comment, not that it may even matter or get read... The G2 RIP rounds have their base penetrate deep enough in FBI spec gelatin to cause a potentially incapacitating wound, the problem lies with the fact that in 9mm you are still getting that .380 caliber sized projectile deep in the target as the "trocars" break off underneath the skin causing serious damage for sure but mainly painfully superficial. If the G2 RIP were to have those "trocars" break off at 12 inches in the ballistic gelatin and then spread out and additional 1.5 - 2 inches deep with a 3 inch separation between them, then we would be talking about an entirely different situation, this is where even a near miss on a vital organ could get hit by a "trocar" causing an incapacitating wound which would be revolutionary game changing in terms of self defense ammo. There are rounds out there that are segmented that do this just with larger pieces, a prime example is the Winchester PDX12 Segmented Slug, holy hell is that thing disgustingly LETHAL, not just for being a slug, but the fact that it dumps ALL of its energy within 18 inches of FBI spec gelatin and breaks off into 3 135 grain .308 sized jagged pieces that spread out about 8 - 10 inches from each other DEEP in the target. If you got hit by one of those slugs you are undoubtedly FUCKED. Do not confuse this with the Slug + Buck version, the one you want is the segmenting slug.
@MrMZaccone
@MrMZaccone 8 лет назад
Performance in ballistic gel is similar to Glaser safety slugs which have remarkable documented stopping power. Coupled with the penetration of the base and applying the research methods of Marshall and Sanow, I don't see the problem.

@steveanbozek3589
@steveanbozek3589 8 лет назад
there is a reason modern ammo has gone away from frangible ammo. It doesn't work. handguns have so little energy you get zero penetration and very little energy on target with those rounds. you get lots of tiny wound channels that aren't great at stopping a threat. with FBI ballistics gel, 12"-18" is their mark because ballistics gel does not exactly represent how a bullet will react in a body. you have bone and varying tissue density to defeat. if a bullet travels 12" in gel it'll probably go about 4-5" in a human body and if it hits 18" it will probably go 8-9" in a human body. anything beyond that runs the risk of overpenetration, anything below (and these rounds are far below that mark save for the core, which almost reaches 12") you more than likely will not hit the vital organs you need to hit to stop a threat with handguns. these rounds died practically a month after release. Most people won't touch them.

You do realize every time you cycle a round through your firearm like that you're pushing the bullet further into the casing reducing its reliability right? All of my guns have a round in the chamber, but if I ever empty it to clean it or for whatever reason, that round goes into a separate pile for range shooting only. I NEVER chamber the same round twice. Not only that, but cycling a round with your hand is not the same as cycling it with the force of the explosion from the gun powder. Not to say the round won't perform the same, but it doesn't really mean anything that it seems fine when you cycle the round the way you did.
