Wrong! No I havent't this series is fricking AWESOME and the art alone should be a reason for anyone to pick it up. Then there's the worldbuilding as well as the storytelling...Absolute gem this.
Rick Remender has been writing a ton of amazing books at image. Low is also an amazing book more people should read. Seven to Eternity blends Sci-Fi and fantasy with a great story laden with relevant themes and Opeña kills on the interior.
I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on the Steve Gerber run of Howard the Duck. I just re-read the issue where Howard escapes from a crime circus while one of his friends is shot in the head by a victim of that crime circus, another of his friends gets raped and beaten into a coma , and yet another feels badly since she sort of caused everything that befell Howard and company. It kept me going as a child.
An *'anarchist league'* would be completely fine. The problem seems to be that there's clearly some sort of hierarchy there if people keep things from others. And, of course, the fact that works of fiction can never be about people just working together and it all working well... 😋
That's the irony of Anarchy as a political system, it will always descend into one that's fascistoid. The paradox of Anarchy is that it requires a strong leader.
@@nielsjensen4185 No it doesn't. The thing is that _people_ tend to want to follow, which creates the opportunity for others to take the lead. You could argue that the scope of anarchy is limited or that it's utopia when you factor in human nature, but the concept remains.
@@douglas2938 That's the ideal version of Anarchy. The thing with ideals is that they only exist as a thought experiment. The moment you put an ideal in the real world it's going to meet reality and reality always win. There are several human psychological and societal mechanics that makes Anarchy impossible in reality and you're going to transplant it then in short order you end up with either a fascistoid or a democratic society.
@@nielsjensen4185 That's why I said you could argue it's a matter of scope. For instance, Representative Democracy has come up with several levels of government to account for the differences in wants and needs and recognizing one model doesn't fit all. So perhaps the mistake is assuming you can get rid of all hierarchies at once rather than working the way up to it step by step.
@@douglas2938 Anarchy is the removal of hierarchies, that's the ideal-. And it has little to with hierarchies, it has to do with practical living. Giving everyone a say in thing sounds good until people realise that means that they have to give their opinion even at times where they have other things to do. At which point they would be willing to give the decision power to others so they could do their thing in peace.
Remender is my favorite comic writer right now. Tokyo Ghost, Seven to Eternity and the recently completed Death or Glory are all amazing. The artists he chooses to work with never disappoint. He seems to favor stories with a definite end over ongoing titlees, which I value. Sometimes they get interrupted, like Seven to Eternity which will be resuming in November after and 18 month hiatus. But I will be there when it hits the shelves because I think the story and character are really engaging.
Nice entry. I'm a sucker for good art and sci-fi. This intro sounds like a very dark Fantastic Four-ish super science family / Venture Brothers gone bad. Suggestion for other reviews since you are doing works that are done - did you ever do Mind Management by Matt Kindt? or the Criminal series by Brubaker and Phillips?
THIS. SEEMS. EXACTLY. MY. TYPE. And I already love Rick Remender I've read Deadly Class. Love philosophical introspective. Love cool worlds and engaging with the topics even if this isn't my own perspective. Flawed character. Yes. Thanks for this recommendation
I'm on board with anything Rick Remender. I'm not usually one to gush over someone with "celebrity" status amidst their profession, but Rick is like a rock star to me. There is rarely a book he does that I don't just absolutely love. Black Science and Fear Agent are probably the top two. Maybe his X-Force/Avengers stuff too. He's just a fount of bat-shit crazy concepts that work so well. To me he is a modern version of 70s Marvel as a writer. Throw it at the wall and see what bonker stories we could get to come out. I always describe Black Science to my friends as a Lost in Space peyote fever dream.
I was able to reach Rick Remender on Facebook a couple years back because I commented on an Image post with "Someone tell Rick Remender that I love him," and his wife sent him a screenshot!
Not really into sci-fi into comic book form. However... Refreshing to hear someone talk about all the little nuances of a great comic book not just the story. Many times intelligence leaps off this channel and it is much appreciated. Thanks
THIS! This is the kind of content I really look forward to here, because it really speaks to the side of fandom that I call home. Philosophical, transdimensional, brain bending nerdom. And I'm not super well versed, so I love a good recommendation. I'm always here for the weird, quircky, squicky, controversial, romps as well, but this is right up my particular ally. Thanks Sasha.
I like your occasional departures from covering big 2 content. How about going even further afield and exploring the work of some defunct publishers...Crossgen comics would make for an ideal case study.
Well, I'm a fan of narrative introspection and multiple ideologies that don't necessarily match my own. That and the art is amazing. Some people put a lot of time and passion into this. Now I need to find my available formats for purchase and take it slow. Thanks Sasha! I just saw your video on Astro City too so that's too comics I'm highly interested in now because of your channel.
Ooh Sasha mentioned Sliders. Who here remembers Sliders? Remember that one episode with the parasite that takes over your body and comes out of your mouth? Freaky.
I remember Sliders. First two years were great, but it really lost its way in the third. Turned into a hybrid action adventure show that rather forgot the premise. So I never watched the last two years.
Sasha, I'm glad you are doing you. If you didn't move your hands around I would have to question, " who are you and what have you done with Sasha?!" Also I really like it when you go over the unusual or put of the norm comics.
I love character narration in thier head. It can be more fascinating than staring at a character who is so silent, that they are worse than paint drying.
You should read Five Ghosts, Moonshine, or any of the Luther Strode from Image, they are all great reads. Black Science is an awesome read! Image deliver those hits!
I love old Dr. Strange comics from back in the day. I bought two tpp of BLACK SCIENCE today. I'm really hoping i will love it! I love wally wood and steve ditko!
Holy hell, you're great. You get straight to the point, very clear, very fast, you're expontaneous and allinfo are really useful. I'd love more of tgese on a bunch of different comics, you got anew sub. (I read all 43 issues of Black Science already but found your video extremely good while searching for possible tv series of Black Science)
I really enjoy your content and I am glad that you expand beyond DC and Marvel. Can you do more content on Godhood comics Mega Woman and Lucius Hammer and that genre?
Time Stamp 0:16 You love what I've done with the place? Ether you really can't see my home, or you really need to work on your sarcasm! That or you really like what happens when a house that needs $20,000 in renovations is held together on a $200 budget. Yes, those are bed sheets and duck tape.
I loved it, the pulp story, and the art, that's it's best selling point. You can kind of see how's its going to end a few chapters before, but still I loved it!
I read the first volume of Black Science a few years ago but it didn't capture my interest so I never followed up on later volumes. Your usual wonderful take down has made me reconsider that & I may have to revisit the series.
This has probably been mentioned before, but have you read the SAGA series? I would really enjoy a video series by you about your thoughts/views on it? (You’re the only comictuber I consistently watch/occasionally binge on loll that’s why I’m asking/requesting. I like it here loll)
Great taste! This is the second time I have seen your "You've been sleeping on" style vid, and the second time I am SOLD on what you are show casing. Thanks! (The other one was Astro City and its so damn good)
I'm SO glad they reprinted book 2 when the 3rd hardcover came out! People were selling it for $200+ which is almost worth it considering how awesome the series is
Black Science feels like a Fantastic Four in a dark way. Grant McKay is an unhinged, way too flawed Reed Richards. Kadir is Victor Von Doom in a corporate manner. Or that's just the silly thought I had after rereading vol 1 and 2. Will hopefully find vol 3 soon...
Rick remender is one of the best writers in comics if deadly class is essentially his life's story told in a vein of a high school for assassins. Than black science and fear agent are his magnum opuses. They are old school classic pulp sci Fi with modern sensibilities
I love how Awesome Sasha's Outlook on comic love... Nemesis was a brilliant piece of Narrative... but It's okay if you don't agree with me... not everyone does that's why I'm me and you are not...
I started reading black science back in 2014. It was and is amazing and yes it is definitely something you can reread and get more out of it. When I started, I didnt have children. Then in 2016 we had our son. Between 2016 and the beginning of 2020 I had stopped reading comics all together. So when I found out it had concluded I went out and got the last two trades and reread the whole story from beginning to end to refresh my memory and I felt an ENTIRELY different perspective. I actually felt more empathy for Grant McCay during my reread. I had also been going through a heavy bout if depression between 2015 and 2019 due to issue with my career. So for better or worse I felt like McCay's story was my story in many ways. There is a point of trauma that Grant has that I dont share him (hope thats not too spoilery for people). Its interesting to note also that the author used this story as a vehicle to deal depression and anxiety that he had been feeling. So I HIGHLY recommend Black Science👍🏼and I loved the ending. But my love for the ending comes with a caviot that I cant explain without spoilers. I'll just say the ending makes perfect sense with the rest of the story.
I'll take this as a recommendation for Space Bandits as I loved the art in Black Science. As for Black Science itself, I absolutely loved it. I like broken characters and Rick Remender writes them particularly well and the over arcing story and interpersonal drama is a high point. I can see fans of hard scifi hating the series as Remender's qualifications to write scifi are a background in Uncanny X-Force and it shows. Every time their should be an explanation of the science their is instead an exclamation of "Black Science", a metaphor about onions and a waving of hands. I don't care though, this was one of my favourite comic series and I'm glad I got deep enough into Remender's work to discover it. For those who like Rick Remender's scifi despite his lack of scientific background I highly recommend Fear Agent. The art is a style more familiar to comic readers than the beautiful paintings of Black Science but has a lot of similar imagery and aliens. It has a smaller cast that's easier to keep track of, an equally if not more broken down lead character and an ending that really worked for me. For those that would like to read Rick Remender's work without being frustrated about his insistence of framing his stories in 'science', I'd recommend checking out Seven to Eternity. It keeps Remender's broken character driven plots and strange worlds but is based in the more comfortably hand waved, fantasy genre. It's still ongoing and I'm impatiently awaiting the next tpb. He also writes super heroes well and I enjoyed his run on Uncanny X-Men (which is how I discovered him) and Captain America (which is some how the first time I ever read a run of Captain America).
I'm gonna read it but can you recommend Invincible to people? It was my first Image comic and I loved it. Kind of wish dc and marvel didn't have their status quo because it could be so awesome
Wow I never thought I'd see a black science video! I loved this book back when it came out...it's like rick and Morty without the absurdist comedy angle
this sounds good on its own, and your review amplifies that goodness. the only thing is that you keep apologizing for enjoying it. there is no need for that.
10:40 it's funny, just recently really that I discovered that some people actually doesn't watch or read something bc of what a caracter says or what message the narrative presents. One of my father's friends refused to watch Breaking Bad because he is totally agaisnt anything related to drugs, he's full on War on drugs.
Gonna check this out. Thanks for the tip. Love the sci-fi content. Also enjoying the bits where you are doing the voices. Made me smile out loud (is that a thing). I would totally watch the whole series that way if you wanted to do it. Just saying.
My gal best bud got me Vol 1 years and years ago and it didn't really take with me on the first read. But then another friend gave me vol 2. After rereading both, I realize I need to see how it ends and am now hunting for the rest of the volumes.
I love your videos! I've recently discovered them and have binging them every morning since. As a 16 year old girl, it's really nice to see someone doing comic reviews that isn't a white man, and I like how well you take on different viewpoints.
