Whoa ! Solid, swing'n and lotsa personality (a none fancy way of saying 'tasty dynamics') ! And I know a few great stride player. Be sure to tell us when you're playing in NYC.
A nice pace, "you've got to be modernistic"!. This video shows a sparkling effect from the dress, that seems to move top to bottom, reminding me of the holes going by on a player piano roll.
Played as an encore it's passable, but playing all the notes in correct sequence is akin to playing this incorrectly. The accents need to BREATHE..not be choked at birth by the next sequence. It is more than I could ever do yet my faculties demand space and this comes from going inside the structure, loosening the wiring enabling the whole to be more than the sum of the parts. The level of endeavour is tremendous and must be applauded.
Gavin Lepley Ok with you on fast but not too fast. This was the point I was making . She’s playing faster than James P. Johnson recordings...What’s the point? Virtuosity is not the only criteria as for every music not only stride. If I had the opportunity to talk to her, I would say one word: relax! There is no train to catch. She still looks so tense while playing and very concentrated on her keyboard like playing a technical piano exercise. She should take as an example more on Fats Waller. Stride is a entertaining happy music before being fast. And not all stride songs have to be played fast by the way...it depends of the play. Don’t get me wrong: she is gifted but the interpretation is somehow disappointing. But as a fan of stride piano, I will always be keen on listening to her performances as I think she belongs to the elite in that field.
