I love the humour here, as always. So we have this spare length of copper pipe left over from fitting these domestic radiators. We could use that to replace the trNO WAIT, a better idea, let's replace the most complex, temperamental and fiddly bit instead, the slide. Whyever not? In other news, as a former tenor trombone player of negligible talent and rapidly advancing years, it is abundantly clear to me that I need one of these yesterday, earlier if possible.

That trombone remides me of the Superbone by Schagerl which is designed by James Morrison. It's a trombone that haves three valves AND a slide so you can choose if you rather play with the slide or with the valves. You should take a look at that intresting piece of brass!

@@ResidentialGondola I own a C F Schmidt French horn from 1913. The fourth valve is indeed a piston. My teacher had a very unusual version of this horn, in B flat/ B natural. The piston valve was double length - presumably to make it less susceptible to air leaks. That was in the 1960's.
@trainliker100
@trainliker100 3 года назад
That would have been a "stopping valve". Depending on horn design, it would lower a half tone for the F horn and three quarters of a tone for the B flat horn. Stopping the B flat horn raises the pitch three quarter tone so you can't can't compensate by using a different fingering. That's where the "stopping valve" is most useful.

I recently came across (I come across a lot of things) a sort of trumpetty bugly horn thing from I dunno, a car or truck or suchlike .... I'm going to try making it have a receiver for a tpt mp, and will see how it goes. It may not go well! I visited my local Jewish temple and had a go on their shofars, and I can testify that you can't play bugle calls on a shofar. The partials come out wrong. I really thought it'd be about right to play "Mess Call" at the end of service to announce the bread and wine and snacks, but alas is not to be. I'm sure my trumpetty-bugly car horn thing will sound awful but sometimes that's kind of fun.

@SamuelPlaysBrass
@SamuelPlaysBrass 4 года назад
Most of the trills played using this instrument's trill valve would be played in the mid to upper register in higher positions. Though even in second or third position the semitone would not be perfect, in the context of a fast trill it would be almost negligible. You do raise a good point though!

I just added an alto trombone and, while mine is just a straight Eb alto, I've noticed a bunch listed had rotary trill valves and the Conn with the Bb attachment was actually the odd one out despite likely being more useful, IMO. Also seen a demonstration of a superbone, which I've always heard of yet, for some reason, I've been thinking of the two playing options as an either/or scenario instead of being able to play the piston valves with your left as you work the slide with your right to blend the play styles together to get a fairly unique sound.

Having "discovered" just recently, I have watched quite a few of your videos. Very enjoyable! I really like your collection of Brass Instruments - you quite a variety of instruments. However, I haven't seen any of the "over the shoulder" Brass Instruments. These were quite common in the mid-19th Century and were used by some Military Bands (including local Guard Units) when the Band marched in front of the Soldiers. The bells of many of these instruments (some Trumpets, Baritones, Euphoniums, etc) were pointed towards the Soldiers so that they could hear the music better and (supposedly) march to the beat. The "over the shoulder" instruments only lasted for a couple of decades and faded from history.
