Since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is over, I have had a lot of questions about how to make the Olympic Team in Archery. Am I too old? Too Young/Early? Is it even possible? These questions answered and more in this video.

Jake! Thank you for the inspiration! I am a 25 year old who almost became a national athlete way back in my teens but in a different sport (badminton) but unluckily, my unsupportive parents broke my one and only racket so I cannot attend the selection. I already ditched my dream of someday stepping into the Olympics as I got busy with work and a new hobby which is astronomy until I discovered a friend of mine and a fellow astronomy enthusiast is an archery club owner. I told him I want to learn archery badly, and I was granted to learn it for free and even joining their club. While I don't own a bow yet (I'm planning to sell one of my telescopes to buy a recurve bow, yeah I'm an amateur astronomer), I've been watching your vids and visualize myself in the mirror what should I do when I started stepping on the range like how to hold a bow, how should I look, how my body should feel (maybe its an advantage for being an athelete before that you can feel your body if your form is right or wrong, at least for badminton when I execute whether a jump smash, a drop shot or defending) Thanks for reminding me that it's never too late to revive a dead dream 💙

At 52 year old, my goal would be to simply shoot world class scores. I like watching the Olympics and world cup but I don't see myself chasing the Olympic dream which i once had when I was 15 year old. Back then, i used to watch Darrell Pace and Rick McKinney and mimic their move. Lastly, thank you Jake for giving out all that very useful info. One can see that you live a happy and full life eventhough you're not competing on the World scene.

I once read a book-focused for bowling and boy was it good. A ton of it would apply to archery. Dean Hinitz I believe the author was. I just bought my first recurve or bow ever and I'm 51. But my eye sight is 10/15. With glasses it is 0/5. I do have issues with night vision, but while I can still see great during the day-I want to learn some archery. I'm more of a shoot 50 arrows-figure out what is the worst thing and try to fix that. Shoot 400 arrows trying to fix it-Then 1000 arrows with it fixed. In bowling-there are about 31 physical things you need to do right every time you roll the ball. In archery-I honestly have no idea how many-wind/humidity/sun all added to the mix.

Hi Jake thanks for the video and the insight it brings. Would you be able to go into a little bit more details for the financial side of things at the high level. You've talked about how you had to get accepted into the Resident Athlete program and how that was basically six days a week of hard training. Is that something you are paying for to get the coaching, use the facilities etc. or is that something when accepted into the program they are paying you to do training etc. with the goal of representing the US at these high level world tournaments? Also what level do sponsorships play into the financials would be interesting to learn about as well.

@JakeKaminskiArchery
@JakeKaminskiArchery 3 года назад
Don't conflate being an "athlete" and being a good shooter. Good shooters exist, but anyone at the top in the world takes is far more serious then others "practicing" The best DO train for sure. Being fit strong and healthy leads to a longer career, and lends it self to dealing with the stressors of competition like travel (jet lag) and injury prevention. Training like an athlete will make those who don't better IMHO just by the nature of an all encompassing comprehensive plan of action.

Compound archers spend a lot of time working on increasing their BMI for greater stability. That doesn't happen overnight. Takes a lot of dedication. Same as any athlete in any sport; there are specific physical requirements, particularly in compound.
