[You who never arrived]
Rainer Maria Rilke
Translated from the German by Stephen Mitchell
You who never arrived
in my arms, Beloved, who were lost
from the start,
I don't even know what songs
would please you. I have given up trying
to recognize you in the surging wave of the next
moment. All the immense
images in me-the far-off, deeply-felt landscape,
cities, towers, and bridges, and un-
suspected turns in the path,
and those powerful lands that were once
pulsing with the life of the gods-
all rise within me to mean
you, who forever elude me.
You, Beloved, who are all
the gardens I have ever gazed at,
longing. An open window
in a country house-, and you almost
stepped out, pensive, to meet me. Streets that I chanced upon,-
you had just walked down them and vanished.
And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and, startled, gave back
my too-sudden image. Who knows? perhaps the same
bird echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening...
I used a scene from Satyajit Ray's The World of Apu... to which I added a Philip Glass track, Etude Number 2...

It's hard to describe what an experience it is reading Rilke's works, and you seemed to have made it even more enjoyable. Thank you!

Phenomenal reading. I got chills. I'd been rereading this poem earlier and wanted to hear it spoken aloud. I'm so glad I found your recitation. Incredible.

There's a word from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows called 'Moments of Tangency' -- this poem just exudes so much of that sentiment Thank you for giving justice to it :')

That makes me very happy. This is probably one of my favorite readings... it has profound significance for me, and I read it feeling that I wrote it, though, of course, I could never write like Rilke. Cheers.

@@APoetryChannel Thank you very much for answering! I think I felt it. I'm very eager to say I've just found your channel and it's also of great significance for me. You read like I always wanted to read but never did because I was always a bit shy to do so. Even after I spent around 5 years in a theater and after playing on the stage and working as a VO-artist I still had been embarrassed to do so. But you really inspire me. You really do. You can imagine how many artists I have heard, how many audiobooks I had listened to. Yet only you read it the way I hear it in my head. English is not my native language, so it's hard for me to describe it, but let's say.. to read with a sense of grandeur and delight all within the confounds of intimacy and otherwordliness. To read silently but not without passion. I'm not sad I haven't recorded much so far because I think I've found your channel when I am ready. You are extremely talented and charming, I think I hadn't been ready before. Now I have someone to look up to and to get inspiration from. Not being embarrassed means having courage which means having something to pay for that courage if you're not a fool. By the way, I once wrote a very similar bit of prose to this poem, with a same metaphor, and even though I have a collection of the best Rilke poems I have never read this one, and I think it's one of his best. So, thank you so much for doing what you do and for loving this poem! Only Rilke could write like Rilke, but you probably write very close to him!

@@garry_wshld What a lovely thing for me to read on this early Wednesday afternoon! Thank you for sharing your experiences.... and do read, do record, for yourself if for no one else. I read for myself mostly, I get the occasional request and try my best to fulfill them all, but reading aloud helps me to be better absorb and embody the words, it's such a joyful experience for me. I have no training, only great passion.... and that's all you need. let me know when you post your first video. xoxo

Beautiful. But shouldn't you mention that the video is from a Satyajit Ray film with the actor Soumitra Chatterjee?
@APoetryChannel
@APoetryChannel 4 года назад
Yes, it's a scene from Satyajit Ray's The World of Apu... but shouldn't I also mention I added a Philip Glass track to it? Etude Number 2... And what else shouldn't I mention? That I am the narrator and the one who put Rilke, Ray, & Glass together along with my lovely voice because I have a gift for the synthesis of art. Anything else? Would you like my Social Security number, address, and credit card numbers, too? I put together this stuff out of the goodness of my heart & I am tired of people giving me shit for it.
