The average investor fails to beat the market… But why? In a world where we have Index funds and passive investing. Why is the average investor failing to keep pace with the market, let alone beat it?
Today we look at cognitive Biases and the impact they have on us as investors.

Ha I decided to leave my care home job, got another job so I'm good but I saw the ship (care home) sinking so I jumped out... Judging by the news of multiple care home closing, I was right to trust my gut feeling. I just used logic and knew to apply for another job while I was still relatively safely in one. Its sad for the residents I looked after, but sometimes in order for things to change sometimes you need witnesses to the disaster. Same with investments.... Earlier two months ago I decided I needed to sell all my investments, didn't lose too bad, but I learnt a lesson from the experience, I learnt I can deal with the loss, I'm back on the investment game now, still a novice but I feel wiser now, especially thanks to damo's vids.

Really like this. I think your message of ourselves being our own worst enemy when it comes to investing is an important one, particularly given our incessant needs for thrills and risk-taking fuelling our dopamine hits, our dominant fear response and the primitive biases which lead us to believe we’re ‘different’ from the rest. It’s broad index funds for me.

If you’re all in on the S&P 500 indexed you have to accept there is the possibility of a 50% drop Buffet has seen this twice in his career. All that means is you just buy on discount and wait until it recovers. If you’re coming up to retirement and want to protect against volatility buy some bonds.

Hi Damien, I recently turned 18 and am wondering what to do with my money. I work a part time job alongside my A Level education, earning around £7000 a year, and I have savings of £4000. I’m looking to enter university education next year. I set up a S+S ISA with vanguard, and pay £200 a month into that. Should I be increasing this amount? Additionally, should I be looking to start a lifetime ISA or begin a pension? Love your videos, they’re so useful - thanks in advance!
@DamienTalksMoney
@DamienTalksMoney 2 года назад
You should be investing whatever you can afford but i can tell you 200 a month is an amazing start mate!! Seriously well done. The key is do not dip into the money and stay consistent even while at uni (this will be tough) If you want to set up a LISA or Pension you can but just understand you wont be able to get your hands on the cash for a while

I got pretty screwed by some crypto investments but not as bad as most (by sheer luck). Now my expectations have changed, i don't mind sitting on the crypto pot i have left and i'm investing in global stocks / shares funds with a modest return which I'll check in on every few months. I do wonder if i needed to learn my lesson at some point though - it's very hard to understand why a more active strategy doesn't work until you give it a go. Thanks for your vids Damien.

I showed them when they lost money when the market dipped...but hiw overall, because it was left they won overall big time. I say..if its in a loss period, leave it and if you can buy cheap..it will go back up BUT have an emergency fund and invest money you don't need for 5-10 years.

Given your remarks regarding the classical economic idea of people acting as selfish yet ultimately rational agents, you might like Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground". In it Dostoevsky argues against the notion of rational selfishness. He asserts that people often behave in ways that are contrary to their self-interest, even when they know full well that their actions are contrary to their interests (well, contrary to the things that a rational "economic man" would regard as their interests).

In my opinion, the single main reason why the average retail investor gets poorer returns than the market average is because he/she sells winning investments too early. Guys who have the steely nerves and patience to let winners run and run tend to be the ones who make the big bucks, IMO. In an extreme case just _one_ really and truly epic winner could massively overcompensate for a whole sea of complete dog-sh1t investments. Take a guy who bought a $1000 dollars of Tesla stock right at the beginning and just held it; literally everything else he touched for several years could have turned to dust and ashes...yet he'd still be sitting on a mini mountain of money! Again, I know that's an extreme example. But one can easily be averaging a pretty miserable 5% across the whole portfolio...then one particular stock starts doing extraordinarily well, and by the end of the year the portfolio has gained by almost 100%. (Has happened to me personally, in fact.) But sell out of that winner too early, and the overall returns go right back to average or below...
@DamienTalksMoney

Yes jay solid wisdom, It is just so hard to practice to let those winners run isn't it!

Absolutely fantastic video Damian - amazing content with so many interesting insights, perfectly delivered; this one deserves some sort of RU-vid award! Genuinely.🏆 Mind if I ask one quick question - not being panicky but in order to diversify and minimise risk would I be sensible to swap my Vanguard US Equity Index Fund to a Vanguard Global Index Fund? Or even an S&P500 (given that those massive companies are often regarded as global)? Thanks again 👏
@jamessimpson555
@jamessimpson555 2 года назад
@Chris H I invested in the first place as had savings in a bank for wayyyy too long, doing zero for me. Reason I invested in the US was Damian mentioned in one of his videos America was flying and how he didn’t see that changing any time soon. I’m in it for the long-term, no problem leaving it 10-15+ years and am prepared for the troughs. Many thanks, what you say is good advice (like Damian’s soap analogy), but I just wanted to make sure I’ve it in the best place for the next 15 odd years as everywhere I turn people seem to recommend Global; so thought I’d ask the main man. Then as you rightly say, leave well alone! 👍
@DamienTalksMoney
@DamienTalksMoney 2 года назад
Thank you so much! The US Equity is very diverse in it self, The global fund is actually 60% America anyway.. So they are both very America focused. There is no need to switch at all in my opinion, but you could always add global alongside if you wanted to. But your American equity is very diverse and with a long term outlook like you have you are on the right track in my opinion

Hello mate, as i see it, if you think of the stock market as a wave say 100m off shore and the movement frightens you then crpto is like the perfect storm meets surfing in honalulu, right now im strapped to my surf board howling like a mad man and riding the big wave. The hand thing made me laugh, all i could think of was the inbetweeners, clunge and bus wankers,,, its a british thing people
@DamienTalksMoney
@DamienTalksMoney 2 года назад
It is a very British thing people! Hahah clunge... Yeah honestly 10% drop in crypto doesn't even bother me anyone i am that numb to these sorts of corrections.

Great video mate. Interestingly, I done my Thesis in Emotional Intelligence, a big part of this is the concept of rationality. Spoiler.... No one is even close to rational. Aren't I clever. Mind you, I also used to sit on my hand so what do I know 🤷‍♂️ 😂

Hahaha the last line made me laugh Funny how so much of economics is built on the idea that we are rational and it only takes a couple seconds to look around and go hold on...

Unless it's your job.. DO NOT try and buy single stocks / crypto currency. Just invest regularly into an index fund.

Well.. I will see you on the moon either way. Not going down the s&p route. I'm investing in stocks I know and believe in. I believe I can get there twice as quick compared to the avg s&p investor.
