A lesson on levels: If you're putting something like that doorbell in next to a door and on brickwork there, sod the level. Line it up with the straight edges around it because if your bit is level and everything else is slightly off, your bit is what looks wrong.

When pulling cables through tight holes always keep a coil of .75 single core cable on the van. Once you rod through the hole tape on the .75 single core pull through the tight space. Then tie the cable you need for the job onto the ,75 single core and pull it through. Makes the join as small as possible

From Google:- In 1887, British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil appointed his nephew Arthur James Balfour as Minister for Ireland. The phrase 'Bob's your uncle' was coined when Arthur referred to the Prime Minister as 'Uncle Bob'.
@davidbeakhust9797
@davidbeakhust9797 2 года назад
Cecil was perhaps better known to history as Lord Salisbury, and the word "nepotism" (which is older) is derived from "nephew", so is doubly appropriate here. It is said in some sources that Balfour would not even have been seen as suitable for the job had his uncle not been prime minister.

Love watching the videos to see how other people work. As a data installer on the other side of the pond. We flag our ends of tape to make it easier to remove them. We also attach a pull string to the super rods/glow sticks. Then tie half hitches (4-5 about an inch apart) with the string on to the cable. Tape that down to the cable. Then use the string to pull in the cable. The harder you pull on the string. The tighter the knots will squeeze the cable.

Great video, I have the battery operated ring door bell for convenience but after a year of having to take it off the wall I decided I needed power, front door is miles away from the consumer unit but due to previous owner running a spur for a porch light I opted to change the spur for a fused socket and use the DIY consumer option of the plug-in transformer plus I now have smart LED lighting the enclosed porch which the ring doorbell can now tell to turn on through a home automation 👍

Hi Jordan, could you not have just used the earth cable from the meter box to the consumer unit as a draw cable to pull another earth cable and bell wire through, which would have meant that you would not have had to drill another hole in the consumer unit or even unscrew it from the wall? There’s another aspect with the earth impedance test. You’re essentially measuring the short circuit current of the supply, and it’s also important that it’s more than the incoming fuse, otherwise you could have a dead short that wouldn’t pop the fuse, but still flow say 100 A for a while, which is quite the fire hazard.

Other end of that 6mm MAY only have a 16 and a 6A so can’t overload. BUT I can guarantee the installer didn’t know the 40A RCD was only rated at 40A and not actually 40A over current protection. I see so many electricians that don’t know the difference there.

C2 for swa. Agree with the type test, own judgement on the situation. Personally I would’ve opted for a seperate unit. There was space around and have now removed all spare ways in the CU. I guess a discussion with client and what circuits are there would be enough to satisfy omitting this as you did mention something about a board change.

i know you have the ferret jordan but I'm sure once you've tried a cheap 5.5mm usb endoscope you'll think you should have added one to the toolbag sooner. they're great for a quick peek in a cavity where you already have a crevice or hole it can get through (such as 9:50). i find it great for plasterboard in particular; drill a 6mm hole and you can have a look behind the cavity after which the hole is small enough you can go over it with a quick spatula of filler - on a white wall you'll never see it afterwards. a few small strategic holes for a small camera like this would also have saved cory from swiss-cheesing that last ceiling a few videos back. I prefer the wired ones as it's one less thing I have to charge.

I'm no builder but could've told you that was a cavity wall in 2 seconds. The bricks are stretcher bonded meaning it's a single layer of brick. Also the property age gives it away. As far as the garage supply goes, there is RCD protection but no overcurrent protection. I believe David Savery had a similar one a while back. I'd be saying C2.

Yes of course it’s non compliant , but it’s surprising how often it is done. We used to do a lot of work in schools , and while doing some other work we came across a DB full of RCDs. Doing socket circuits in several classrooms . So no overload protection at all , I know for a fact it must have been done by a (professional) so it can only be down to not understanding that the units don’t have overload capability . Still thankful Jordan had come to the rescue and all will be well. Best wishes and kind regards 😀👍👍👍

It is the 6mm SWA cable which needs overcurrent protection. As it stands it is “protected” by a 100A cartridge fuse which under fault conditions will pass sufficient current to cook the RCD and the SWA cable.

Hiya…Another great video, thanks. I think one of your Artisan colleagues also installed a Ring as well. Seeing your video has prompted me to ask your thoughts on the height of consumer units. Part M of Building Regs suggests that the height should be between 1350mm - 1450 from the finished floor. There is contention on this, as some say this is only for new builds. I live in a 1969 bungalow and am just about to undertake a full rewire. You thought would be welcomed. Thanks👍

About the garage extension, I would think it depends if there is a sub-mcb with overcurrent protection.
@TheHomeent
@TheHomeent 3 года назад
Not really, something needs to protect the cable from overcurrent. So depending on the derating factor due to how the cable is installed a stable over current protection device is needed. And a 100A incomer fues cartridge won't break down untill around 300A under surge or over an hour at 100A. The relevant tables in the regs book will show this for the exact fuse type. This is why an mcb and rcd or an mcbo should be fitted.
@effervescence5664
@effervescence5664 3 года назад
As long as the transformer meets the Din standard it's fine, just need to make sure it doesn't interfere with the cover as not all rcbo/mcb's are the exact same height. Great job though hooping over the 16mm earth and feeding down probably would of been easier.

The SWA at the garage can only pull the rated MCB downstream so it’s not dangerous is it? Surely it’s the same as the main supply coming into the property there is no second 100 amp fuse at street level is there? The reason the cable is fine is because the property can only pull what the 100 amp fuse allows surely? Happy to be corrected tho as all the above are questions. Thanks

In my experience DNO's don't permit consumers equipment to be installed in the meter box without first getting permission, maybe it depends on the region or the DNO. I would give that a C2 as the swa is not properly protected against overcurrent. It looks like there would be room to put an mcb beside that rcd to give the appropriate protection. I have enjoyed watching your videos for a while now and have now subscribed.

As someone who works for a DNO this interests me as my own company has no idea on the legal rights as to who owns what in the meter box. The best answer I have had is its most likely the property owners responsibility as theres 3 different levels of owner ship at the meter box and its on the consumers property. I've not know my own DNO get funny about consumer equipment in a meter box. Personal experience however when there is PV and they fill the entire meter box etc is quite annoying but that's about it from my experience.

Not a sparky so please correct me if I’m wrong but if a short doesn’t cause over 100 amps but is more than 40 it won’t blow the fuse but I believe it could bugger the RCD causing it to fail open. Also relying on a sub main to be correctly spec’d isn’t ideal so could be back to drawing more than the rcd is rated for.

Hi you can't assume the RCD will fail open. Yes the connected load is less then 40amps. The cable is not protected, if a fault devloped, the fault would require more than 100 amps for the fuse to fail

The garage supply dont comply with that bit in the big book of rules that says "wherever theirs a reduction in the current carrying capacity of a circuit suitable protection should be fitted" or something like that.As for code id go C2 as its not an immediate risk,but a fault could cause an immediate risk .

The big blue book says a lot of things, some of it incorrect that they have done a copy and paste job from the previous incarnation, as well as some of it unnecessary, and let's face it, if it actually said you can't do X or y we would all be better but they don't, but prefer to adopt pinocchio's way when he's trying not to fib, you would have to watch Shrek to get that joke 😂

I installed the Ring Door Bell Pro a while ago myself, at the time it came with the transformer, not with the plug. I decided not to put the transformer inside the consumer unit, because if that transformer needs replacing, I will have to call the electrician in again. Also, Ring door bell needs a reboot/reset from time to time, so a switch is required for that. So I asked the electrician to install a separate tiny consumer unit that only can fit 4 DIN units, put the transformer and a switch in that. So far The Ring door bell needs a few resets, so a dedicated switch for the door bell is the right decision.

So seen a question about power adapters. A 18v drill battery is plugged into a device which gives 200w UK plug. Used for home routers. Will this device up the voltage to 230v and then the router step it down again? Or will the router only draw what's needed ?

Where can I get the meter cabinet unlock tool you have please ?

23:11 its not really about the reality of it being a problem, its about the legalities. if for some reason that breaker were to melt and cause a fire, regardless of reason, one of the first questions asked would be 'was it type tested for the DB? if not, why was it used?' and 'who installed it?'. We might all know that it was fine, but as far as The Law is concerned, the installer is responsible for using a non type tested item which subsequently caused a fire. The British standard is very clear about these things and it would be very hard to argue against in court.

Some recommend putting a resistor in the bell wire Does this make you the odd man out or is it overkill.Sparks it all depends on what book you read or as is now what video.He said she said.

No mechanical protection where cables enter consumer unit? Any reason why you didn’t put some form of protection for your cable?

For a starters, i wouldn't install any consumer unit inside a meter/service head box. As for doing an eicr, i would C2 it, as it is not best practice or compliant, and if there was a short between line & neutral, you loose the power to the entire house and melt the insulation in that swa in the process. That 100 Amp fuse will probably let go at around 140 to 160Amp, so that cable is going to get very hot under that fault condition. I would like to enrol on an Artisan drilling course please.
