Food stinks - the young monk expressed how food that once provoked his desires was no longer enticing. I quit - the young monk expressed that he had reached a state where all attachment to the world had been rescinded. The old monk - being stuck in theology and unhappy with monastery life, projected his own feelings on to the young monk's words.

Instead of complaining we should see good in all situations be happy no matter what

These words are very true. One day my landlord said - "my retirement doesn't pay me a lot of money" and after hearing this, I said nothing but I was furious! I thought to myself - " the man has a roof over his head, food to eat, water to drink, a regular monthly rent payment from me and yet he is complaining about his lot in life. That to me is a strong sign of ingratitude but I often hear a lot of complaints from people about how unfair life is but there is only one practical solution to this problem - get off your backside and make the necessary changes in your life in order to live in peace and prosperity and once you have achieved your goal, start showing gratitude for what you have because if you don't, you will wake up one day and find that everything you ever cared about has gone. I learnt this lesson 13 years ago and it left a scar on me but I decided to show gratitude for what I have after realising that I had been an idiot for many years of my life and blind to reality and today my life has improved and despite the obstacles that still come my way, I know that i have no right to complain so I keep my opinions to myself unless I choose to express them to my psychologist. This monk didn't have to meditate in dieversity

Looked at this story twice and concluded that the story is one sided story. The young monk complained three times in three years and the "wise" monk said that the young monk always complained. If you say six words in three years and that means complaining then you surely are cut from the world. The elder monk failed to listen and comply whit the problems in his monastery, bad sleeping, bad food, nobody cares about this and so the young monk quits meaning nobody did anything even if he said something. At the end there are two choices given here, it should be at list three choices, the third will be do something about situations around you. Because of gratitude you will always be bullied and if something is wrong and you see and don't act then nothing will get better, if you see bad thinks but not complain then nothing will be resolved, that is way choosing to complain makes thinks move in a direction. When there is a problem you try to resolve, if is not possible don't chose ignorance but to do something. By gratitude things are not resolving itself, there is a place to be grateful but that wont solve big issues and problems. No wonder the temples in middle east looks the way they are, ignorance is bliss in there.
