Light pollution can be really scary when you look into it and the more I learn about space the more I am filled with a desire to protect our access to the stars. If we don't act now, we could risk losing the stars for our future generations and that would be a future I would hate to see...

The worst thing is that most people don't even care that they live in light polluted areas, because they don't know what they're missing out on. How many people have never even thought to look up at night because they can only see the brightest stars and the Moon?

As someone who absolutely LOVES the night sky but could only see a couple stars at night, its quite sad. One of my goals in life is to find a place with little light polution and allows me to see the arm of the Milky Way. Luckily I'm in a place in Canada where it isnt TOO populated and I could easily find a place outside the city that allows to see the Milky Way or the Aurora Borealis. And thats by going more North, where it gets colder and where the population gets lower

not populated yet ... it's sad that our system is based on growth .. with 8 billions people on Earth we must start to ask ourselves if we really want to sacrifice nature for infinite growth in a finite world. I still hold a small hope that we will get our priorities straight and stop thinking about alway growing more and more if is means to sacrifice a lot of things we need .

this so me I live in germany therefore I have never seen the night sky with more than a couple of stars my goal in life is like camping in some forest waking up during the night coming out of my tent and seeing the Milky Way I love everything related with space and I am so sad that I'm not abel to see it every night

I’m at the edge of the city so it isn’t too bad but this is no longer the only subdivision here. A new neighborhood is about to be built in the direction I always point my camera for deep sky photography. This population growth is killing me. I won’t be able to do astrophotography in the city anymore unfortunately.

It's mind-boggling to think about when I was a little kid, I never imagined that it was even possible for the Milky Way to be a part of our night sky. People grew accustomed to the empty view. Experiencing the actual dark sky would change the perspective of probably every individual and It's really my biggest goal to see it with my own eyes. About 8 years ago I went to Mauna Kea, and it was a mind-altering experience. I was used to a few stars if it was a super clear night, and suddenly there were thousands. I had no idea that was what our night sky looked like. It’s one of my favorite memories to this day.

Same I live in Mexico city, a city bigger than the region called after it, a city where it's a miracle if you see a star, but when I went to Phillip Island in Australia, I went to see the little blue penguins and endend up seeing the Milky Way, like I had never seen before

if you hold up a piece of sand, 1 single grain, the space that takes up when you extend your arm and look at it, within that space there are 10,000 stars, that is a LOT of stars, we just don't get to see it :(

Spent 2 years in Alaska about 30 miles outside of kavalina and you can absolutely see so much of the skies and space it’s so beautiful and humbling like you can literally feel yourself tumbling through space sitting on a giant rock. It took me a couple years to get used to seeing it like through a film here in Denver. I miss it dearly.

It took multiple years of my life for me to see a constellation, and I was completely stuck in place looking at the sky after coming home from a long trip at night because I genuinely thought they weren’t that easily viewable but it’s one of those moments that made me remember how much I used to love the stars as a child, looking at the sky at night in a cozy blanket and loving drives home at night just staring out the window for hours

I was blessed with a chance to see a completely dark sky once. It was a very rural part of Alabama I was visiting my aunt once, and a hurricane was rolling through (hence why we were visiting) the power was out for 2 weeks. And for 2 weeks while I was there, we saw the Milky Way in it's uninterrupted entirety. Stunning.

This has been one of my biggest wishes to see the sky without light pollution, this year in December I'll make sure to visit a remote area, I know its hard to find somewhere without light pollution, but even a lot more than usual can be so pretty.

I was raised in a little village in a developing nation. We used to spend the summer nights sleeping on the terrace under the starry night, and during my early years, counting stars at night was a regular nightly ritual. Before moving to New York, I was unaware of how truly magical and uncommon my experience was.

same, I grew up in Jamaica and seeing the vast array of infinite stars was just a daily thing. It's really quiet sad and scary. A few times a year I get out to the country now and catch some stars, but it's like once in a decade I can see the milkway clearly! :(

I used to imagine what it would be like if we could see the galactic core like in games and movies before I learned that we actually could without light pollution. I still remember the day I learned how much of the milkyway is actually visible but city lights have ruined it and it was a mix of emotions ranging from frustration that I was unable to see it but also excitement that it is possible.

Hello I am 15 years old and from Vietnam. Back in 2020, I had a trip to Nghe An (sea tourism), I remember it very clearly in early July 2020. Then, from the evening of that day, the whole resort and some surrounding areas lost power. At night, some of my relatives and I couldn't sleep because it was too hot. My cousin and I went out and an amazing scene appeared before my eyes, a night sky in Bortle 3-4. It was extremely beautiful, full of stars and darkness, my cousin and I simply will never forget that night, the most beautiful night of my life. At that time I had a question: Why can't we see this scene above the city? . From there I started learning about light pollution and astrophotography. 2022 is the first year I photographed the Milky Way in my hometown (Suburban Hanoi). Now my biggest wish is to raise people's awareness about light pollution and hope that Vietnam will have the first night sky conservation area, a dark sky place . I want to have a sustainable tourism industry based on night sky conservation. and green tourism, I believe it is sustainable tourism. I want to say to everyone who lives under light-polluted skies and wishes to have a night sky like me, I believe we can do it, bring the night sky back to us. I’m in the Navy and when we’re underway, the sky above the ocean is just the most gorgeous thing you could ever see. look up the night sky in the ocean and you can see it recorded from cargo ships. jaw dropping

@@asap445 Can chime in here, it's magnificent. I'm guessing they probably were close to Bortle 1 when they saw the skies. I saw them on Bortle 4-5 and it was still mesmerizing. It really made me feel insignificant in that moment seeing the Milky Way.

I remember going camping with my family when I was a child, after we finished setting up our tents and stuff and making dinner, I looked up to the sky and had to grab my chair to make sure I didn't fall backwarrds from the beautiful sight I was seeing. We weren't anywhere close to a big city, so you could see the milky way clearly...truly one of my favorite childhood memories.

Coming home from an amusement park we got lost in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. It was an incredibly clear night, and I saw so many stars. I managed to get us to pull over on the side of the road and stargaze for a while. It’s one of my favorite memories, and basically got me obsessed with the stars

I have 60 acres of land in the middle of nowhere that has been in my family since the 1700s basically… my grandfather would take me out there when I was a child and show me all kinds of amazing celestial events. I’ve seen comets and all kinds of other interesting things there. On some nights with no moon, it will be so dark you cannot even see your hand in front of your face. It’s really amazing how different our experience can be with no light pollution.

You are right. As a youngster in the 90's I could CLEARLY see the majesty of the Milky Way at nights at the beaches in Greece. Since then I have never seen it again like this. So sad for us all and especially for younger generations. I really miss hard the nights at the beach, where we played guitar around the fire. We lay on the sand looked up to the night sky and told us stories man. Imagined the story by a background of the Milky Way. What a nice picture better than everything we can reach by electronics. We must get darker for being human again.

While we are so intelligent to generate even Holograms of Tupac Shakur singing a concert, we should be intelligent enough to use the earths resources far more wise. We have just this one HOME and we should treat the earth like a baby. Money and capitalism is nothing against mother earths extremely life supporting systems we even explored. Such as its magnetic field, its seasons... Even without these, there would be no any life on here. Can you believe, my grandpa in Greece had a donkey as a vehicle?^^ He was a farmer and lived fully natural. The moste electronic things he had, was a radio, later a TV and off course a very old refrigerator.^^ That's it. Ah okay, and a telephone. He even plants the most his family eats on his fields and all were fine.^^ And this was not a village in Greece, no he lived in a small city. I am so happy to know and have seen such a lifestyle so me easier can compare the right direction we human had to go. For people of today would say, Whaaat, even no Internet.^^ What a lame life. I can say, he was happy and every other guys who lived in these times were MUCH HAPPIER than we all are. It was true life and everybody was acting very human to each other and no one had any burnout syndrome, like nowadays. We as mankind should paddle back to the roots.^^ And yes, then we would dimm down the lights of our cities and finally can see again with our bare eyes the majestic beauty of the Milky Way.

Yes I was wondering why I see less and less stars at night time outside. Now I only typically see few, when I look at the night sky. I used to seeing like over dozen, when I was kid ten years ago. Now I maybe get the reason.

I remember, when I used to go sometimes jogging at night in local park and I hate how much light the streetlamp next to me gives, when im jogging, when I enjoy jogging in the darkness not being seen, when these streetlamps are so annoying with how much light they actually give and how much they direct the attention towrads me. Powerful streetlamps are also the reason we propably see less stars outside at night time anymore. I just imagined how much better sleep I would get, if I slept under the sky of stars, when I have had problems since childhood to get sleep. One reason might be bit bad mood, but maybe its also, because there is so less stars outside anymore at night time.

It makes me sad that we'll probably never see the milky way outside of reserves. I'm genuinely surprised that the majority of earth's human population hasn't seen the milky way, it's mind boggling. I have been lucky enough to go travel many places (thanks to my parents!) and see the milky way. I have hope that this situation will improve, but i doubt that will happen..

We arrived at night, I looked up and damn it, there were just a billion stars and colorful galaxy nebulae! I told my parents that I could see the galaxy, but they laughed and said that it was impossible to see it and probably it was something else. Damn, up to this point, I myself doubted that this was possible :(

I remember being at my grandma’s house way back when I was a kid, maybe in middle school? She lived in rural Michigan, her neighbors were cows living miles away. And I could see the Milky Way galaxy from her front lawn. Unfortunately, now there are windmills and other things set in place nearby and you can’t see the galaxy anymore, just the stars. …Hurts to know I may never see that again.

I have been telling my daughter for years that I want to move somewhere that I can see the stars again. Growing up in New Mexico, there was not much light pollution. As a child I remember going out into the backyard to lay in the grass and watch the stars often. I never got tired of how beautiful and mesmerizing it was. Now I fear that even if I go somewhere dark, all the satellites and space debris will ruin the view. I don't remember us giving corporations permission to clog the night sky. Now it seems anyone who wants to and has funding can send something up to orbit and block the view. The international space station never bothered me, as it would take a while to circle the earth and fly past again. Also, it was an international sciece project, and I was proud we worked together. I sincerely hope our governments and everyone else start doing what we need to to protect the planet. Bringing the darkness back would hopefully inspire more people to care.

Damn.. I didn't expect to get this emotional. The line about the Moon and Galileo absolutely touched me. The night sky-it has the celestial bodies that our ancestors, everybody that we have read about in history books, and every single creature that has looked up into the night sky have seen. I might be overthinking, but damn, I feel like from now on, every time I look at the moon, I'll remind myself of that. I genuinely felt bonding with every human being and creature that has existed here on this Pale Blue Dot.

I drove out 40 minutes on a clear night to the country side to see the perseid meteor shower. It was about 4-5 on the Bortle scale but it was very humbling. Even though I couldn't see the arm of the Milky Way in 100% clarity it was still utterly breathtaking. I really want to visit a dark site to see it in it's true beauty.

I didn't know how beyond lucky I was to be one of the few people to see the entire night sky in darkness. I remember looking up and seeing the beauty of the night sky with the Milky Way and countless of stars right above me. The amount of stars in the night sky even illuminated the ground (which is crazy to think about) so, imagine what a full Moon night was like. How I wish I could go back in time and treasure that moment. It will forever live in my mind. For those wondering, I used to live in one of the Caribbean islands and more than 20 years ago the powergrid on the island was very very bad. So, there were nights where the whole island lost power completely and then, a few minutes later...a different kind of wonder would be right above us. Things will never be the same again because I've heard things haven't gotten better (more light pollution) than when I lived there 20+ years ago. 😞

I am living in Singapore and light pollution seems to have gotten worse while I am still growing up. When I was young, I can visualise the glowing planets and barely see the flickering stars, especially when I cycled to a place where it is mostly taken over by nature and... mosquitos. I was absolutely amazed of the visible dots and it hit me by researching more about space. Currently in 2023, the night sky seemed to be purely dark and I unfortunately am unable to see the stars which used to be visible, but planets dimly lit. Space definitely intrigued me a lot and I am genuinely disappointed that light pollution ruined other generations to even view the sky. In conclusion, the world will eventually end to darkness... :(

I remember when I was a teenager (I'm 47 now), one winter I was at a friend's cabin way outside of any significant sources of light pollution. I went to fetch water from a hole made in the ice (the cabin didn't have running water back then), and I happened to look up. It was a clear night, and I was so amazed at the sight of the field of stars above that I just stood there for I don't know how long, gawking at it. I haven't see the sky quite like that since.

To be honest, I never thought I would see it, but when I went to Bampa, Uttarakhand (770 feet above sea level), it was truly breathtaking. I lay on the mountain grass and gazed up at the sky. I still remember that scene perfectly, even though it's been ages since I was there. P.S: I and my friends found a pack of wolves on the other side of frozen river, glad we made it out safely 💀

Its not light pollution Light pollution is a thing, but its minor compared to other forms of pollution Especially with green house gasses from fossile fuels and ect. Those would result in the sky being less clear to see, due to the gasses Also, you know what it also results in? I love this Video, i am a photographer and at the moment i am on vacation and a couple days ago i tried to take some shots of the milkyway and it is just incredible how much of a difference it was for me already only by seeing the night sky just a few stages darker than in my city at home(Germany->well-developed infrastructure ). Even in the place where I am right now in a city in Italy in the Mediterranean Sea where I thought there would be less light pollution (I thought this was because of the less developed infrastructure, which was a mistake just because of the tourism here)I had to drive to a certain beach which was 40 minutes away. And even there I could only take photos out to sea because everything inland was too bright. But I could slightly see the Milky Way and again only the side towards north east out to the sea. The rest was to bright. And that was enough proof for me that every single word of this video is true and that I enjoyed every second. Great video, loved it!!!👍👍👍

This video brought tears to my eyes 👀 because I've seen stars scattered here and there in the sky. Currently I'm in 8 grade in south India, and I want to go to New Zealand and see the dark sky. Imagine seeing those beautiful stars, constellations, planets, galaxies every night 🌙 I would not sleep. BTW I'm from the community 🙂

Deep rural South Africa in the 80s or 90s, I took seeing the entire Expanse for granted. It was spectacular. Rural North Wales in winter has some spectacular night skies. But I went to South Africa in 2019,and in the middle of the Karoo at 2 am, got out the car and looked up. I gasped. The night sky is truly awe inspiring. I can see how LA residents were over awed. I have actually seen the Milky Way out in Camp Aquehonga as a Boy Scout. Being a Ten Mile River camp, the technology grid in the area is very scarce, and getting a signal is near impossible, so virtually, no light pollution exists: you and your Troop are at the mercy of the wild (and the Aquehonga staff), and one day, I noticed that one of my troop adults went out to the Athletics field, and being a repeat insomniac, I followed in, and everyone else noticed me. Eventually, we all saw what the fuss was about. The entire universe was viewable. We could see through the Orion arm, and the multitude of stars that orbited around the galaxy. It was beautiful.

The most i can see here in my house at night are the constellation that looks like a cup with 2stars on top, 3 in the milldle slanting and 2 on the bottom. Whoa this blew my mind. I’ve always sworn I had memories of seeing the night sky out in the wilderness brighter and more spectacular than I’ve ever been able to see since. I live in a big city so I don’t regularly see the night sky from remote areas. But I remember going on a school retreat to a camp out on a ranch far from any city (probably 19 years ago or so) and the sky was so spectacular it left a big impression on me. Like I was always chasing that experience every time I would get out of the city I would want to look up at the night sky to see if I could see it that way again. No matter what, as I got older, I always felt that even though the sky view from a place like the mountains was obviously much brighter than in the city, it never lived up to that childhood memory. This explains so much. Sad that I’ll never see it that way again

i went backpacking with a friend in the colorado mountains like 2 years ago, and when i went outside in the middle of the night the sky actually hurt my eyes cuz ive havent seen the stars or galaxy like that before.. it was insanely bright compared to a city night.

When I was 14, living in the mountains southern africa, I was blessed to see the stars on the clearest nights where I lived. The sky was so filled with stars it was like a was peering into an ocean of little lights up above, and I would gaze for hours, multiple nights. 5 years later, the towns in the valleys were expanding, and the lights were getting brighter and brighter, it wasn't long until I could only see 2/3 of the sky on clear nights. I have hope that one day, many parts of the world will reduced light pollution, but it will simply come down to how much more our civilization changes for the next century. It's changed a lot over the past century, so the possibility to make things better is always there.

Went camping once a couple years ago with my dad and my brother. Far away from populated areas. It was night, and I headed to beach to see crabs; but instead I saw the milky way arm, it was beautiful. I hope I can camp in that same spot some time soon.

I'm in Melbourne, Australia and the light pollution is pretty terrible. Still, once you get to the outer suburbs you can generally see that the Milky Way is there. If you go another 20-40km out, you can see a lot more and easily identify the Milky Way. Having said that, true dark-sky viewing opportunities requires a longer trip but if you go Northwest from here for a few hundred kilometres you will see marvellous things. I do find it tragic just how comprehensively we have removed ourselves from viewing the night sky in any meaningful way.

I live in a village. When I was a kid in summer me and my dad would stare at the night sky and marvel at the sight. A few moths ago coming home from work at night I remembered those days and was shocked while looking up even in our yard that I was barely able to see stars thanks to the amount of light pollution. You'd think that in a rural place it wouldn't be as bad but seems like even places like these aren't safe of it. It certainly is sad.

For that to happen the lights on 1 side of the earth should be off (or maybe just using the techniques used in the dark night reserves) for an entire night because a few minutes will still have lit up night times due to the fact that light needs time to go away It would be 2 or 3 nights if it's a worldwide event because of one side of the Earth being daytime and stuff

I remember going to the dark sky park in Terschelling the Netherlands once and it blew me away! It had me stargazing for hours. You couldn’t even make out the constellations anymore because there were so many other stars around.

When I used to visit my grandpa in the inner city during summer as a kid, there was this issue that around 7 p.m. the entire area's electricity used to go out due to some electoral disputes. We used to sleep on the terrace, facing the sky to get a better exposure to the air. I remember how spectacular and magnificent the sky looked, shining bright in it's glory. Infact, I used to spend the entire night gazing at the sky most of the times. And when I used to return to my place and go upstairs, it would disappoint me so much. It's very sad how we've lost the map of our very existence.

The worst thing is that where I'm living, if you look up at the night sky, trust me you can only see a couple of stars and by that I mean not more than 10. Its sooooo sad for someone like me who loves the night sky....and I don't know that I'll be able to see the beautiful night sky full of stars, even imagining it looks so dreamy and wonderful and I wish that someday my wish would come true.

Look up a light pollution map where you live. Maybe you can find a location where it's about 4-5. You won't see it 100% but you'll still see at least parts of the Milky Way's arm.

Hey Kobi. Saw your post on the IG podcast and straight up went to see it. I've always been amazed by the night skies for as long as I can remember. You're absolutely right here. The situation around my hometown in the Northern part of India is the same. I remember taking a shot of the Milky way from my balcony 7-8 years ago, which eventually never happened again. But yeah, where I live, just a little ahead, say about 70km, I can see it with my naked eye in all its glory. Anyway, thanks for creating such videos. Love it.

I live in a town in the outskirts of the province of Rome, and I have to say that I experienced this phenomenon myself sadly: I remember that when I was little, in certain rural areas away from my town, the Milky Way was a bit visible while now, 20 years later, you cannot anymore. Basically I've gone from a tier "3.5" to an almost tier 5 sky in two decades, and even with recent programmes from the region which aimed at upgrading street lights with modern LED lights that are covered for at least 50% above them with a cap, it seemed that the issue hasn't improved...

When I was a kid, I loved going to my grandparent's farm because I got to see the milky way. Their farm was in southeast Idaho, in high-altitude desert. No air pollution, light pollution, clouds, or close neighbors. Stars spread so thickly across the sky that I had a hard time picking out even the stars I knew, like Orion's belt. I regret not being able to see that anymore.

I spent my childhood in a rural place. I remember watching the night sky and it was so easy to find the constellations even with street lights. Last year, I went back to the place and stayed even farther from what can be called a township, It was a village, and yet one time when there was no power, I could not locate all the constellations! How about you go to the starving kids in Africa and you tell them they NEED to understand that across the globe there are societies where almost everyone has access to food, a decent home, earn more in a month than they will in years and so on. I live in rural south dakota and have loved the night sky since I was a kid, I remember staring up at the sky while me and my dad sat by the campfire for hours, until the stars went away because the sun was coming up sometomes. Now I look up and personally can see a fraction of what I used too, can't imagine how much worse it is in very urban cities and states😢 I encourage everyone to go to the darkest spot as soon as you can because it gets worse every day.

My Dad took me to the top of a road beside a field where he used to look at the stars when he was younger, we looked at the view of the town but the sky was blocked out by all the light. It was sad.
