This must be such an interesting perspective for you David! Because most of the people would come to Beamish and learn through the "live history" but for you it's bringing back the most precious memories from the past 🥹 Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
@@JayandKarolina which parts of the museum did you not get a chance to visit? well worth another trip to it to experience what you have missed out on, I live about 10 mins from the museum
That's so kind of you Andrew :) We really wanted to make sure to give you a perspective of what to REALLY expect - but needless to say, the whole day was packed with great experiences and we'd love to return to Beamish Musuem again as we didn't get to see/do/try everything 👀✌️
Get yourself there I swear you will not be disappointed the bakery and the chocolate shop take card as well as cash so do all the shops anyway except for the fairground .🏴
Would need to pay a visit soon then! Any tips from a local expert? 😏 We love how you help us create the most authentic content possible, because despite research, sometimes we can't find or learn everything ourselves!
"Just don't go to Sunderland, there's nothing there" is a total lie. You'd love Sunderland. People are always shocked when they visit. Can't stand people from Sunderland like that lady that try act like it's the worst place in the country. Go move to Gateshead or Benwell if you think Sunderland is bad 😂 Sunderland is a wicked little city, beautiful as well.
NO WAY~ I went to Beamish during my last trip to the UK! It was such a fun, cool and interesting experience! It really felt like my family and I went 'back in time' to the good ol' simple days 😄❤👍
Thanks for sharing!! We felt exactly the same way :) The atmosphere was made by the people working there because they told very interesting stories! And obviously the idea of selling goods how them were made in the past - the rock buns and cooked in a coal fired range fish & chips were just incredible!!! ❤️ Have you managed to try them?
I have been a couple of times. They really have captured the essence of the past, it's like you have been a time traveller and warped into the past. Definitely would like to make another visit
Couldn’t agree more Chris :) What we found cool was the opportunity to have all the valuables conversations with the staff members who were sharing a lot of information in a very fun way 🎉
@@JayandKarolina Last time I went they just done the fish and chip shop, that as quite a few years back. Now they have the 1950s street with another fish and chip shop and the bakery. I most likely pay a visit next year. I am so glad places like this exist, as a child in the 1960s and 1970s we don't appreciate how lucky we are now, we had little choice back then and no fast food places like we have now. I remember only having BBC 1, 2 and ITV and mostly in black and white
Amazing behind the scenes tour!!! So blessed to have seen all of that extra stuff. The courtyard is stunning, as was the restaurant. Amazing place, amazing food too!
Glad you both enjoyed it! We were fascinated by every detail Phil has shared with us, as it was the first time we had slept in such a historically important place - and of course in a haunted castle! 👻🏰 We treated ourselves to a dinner in the castle's restaurant and honestly it was the best one we've had this year!!! Memories for a lifetime :)
@JayandKarolina that restaurant sure is amazing, as is the whole place. I made the mistake of saying "do you like Castles?" to my Wife lol Northumberland, where I'm from, is the most densely populated county with castles. We stayed in a beautiful Gaul in Morpeth, visited Warkworth, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castles in the same day then stayed in Lumley Castle the next night. We took in Newcastle and the Malmaison the day/night before. I love the energy you guys bring with each new adventure, really does add to the viewing pleasure. Safe travels guys 🙏❤️
That wife dont go to sunderland why not? Best landmarks in the north east and best seafront in tbe north east. Some stuff at beamish is frm sunderland old trams, old house, old cinema
We were actually considering visiting Sunderland ourselves so got a bit confused haha. What would you recommend to do, see or eat there? :) It might be an interesting video for us to make in the future indeed!
@@JayandKarolina tbh the town centre is upside down at the min. After years and years of no investment or nothing happening has give sunderland a bad name. Currently alot of regeneration going on in the centre and new businesses opening up. A nice place to go is the sheepfolds stables near the football ground, lots of foodie places there and once the new bridge is built it will lead over into the centre where new bars and food outlets are springing up. The seafronts of roker and seaburn also are a nice place to go for a walk and have food/drink & anyone visiting sunderland has to go to penshaw monument, the views are mint and you can see the cheviot hills on scottish borders easily on a clear day
Don't worry - when we get there we'll judge Sunderland for ourselves, because we've heard a lot of really positive opinions? Is there anything we definitely shouldn't miss??? :)
@@JayandKarolina Roker pier and downeys fish n chips shop at the entrance of the pier.. also seaburn beach best in north east in my opinion.. plenty places to eat and drink in seaburn.
I love beamish. My father in law still works there, you passed him when you came out of the mine. In his 70s and still a miner (kind of). love the video thank you for showing the world how lucky we are up here in the north east
Absolutely love this place, need to revisit as they didnt have the bakery, fish and chip shop, chemist and 1950,s town when I was there. I could spend days looking around its a fantastic place to visit😊
Please do Susan! You must have been really ling time ago because they've just opened a 1900s town with another fish & chips shop, coffee house, cinema, police houses, toys shop, and many more 😍 We went there for the opening and still didn't have enough time throughout the day to go everywhere we wanted to! So the yearly pass really does make sense 👍
It’s less than 5 miles from Newcastle and even closer to Durham…. 3 best places in the North East to visit 👍 Best to go when the kids are at school, no queues whatsoever and easier to navigate.
Glad you enjoyed it Stanisław! We are very grateful that we are able to film such experiences because we wish everyone had the opportunity to visit these places someday ❤️
My family and I absolutely love Beamish ☺️ we visit at least 10 times each year and I always notice something different each time we go. The farm is my favourite area. I’ve been going since I was a child, now I take my own child and I really hope he continues the tradition and takes his children too hopefully at some point 😊
Oh, wow, that's so impressive!!! 10x within a year - it's a great tactic because each time visiting a different part will allow you to explore the whole of museum! Such a great family tradition! Keep on going 🧑🧑🧒🧒❤️
I'm so glad you guys enjoyed Beamish. It really is a jewel in the Crown of the North East. Those coal-powered fish & chips looked beautiful! The whole video took me back to my time there, one school visit when I was much younger and a visit with my family when our kids were a bit younger. My Wife and I also stayed in Lumley Castle when we first met, she wanted to see where I came from so I arranged a mini tour and ended up staying in the castle. Really is a beautiful place to explore. Thank you so much for taking me back in time! Hope Karolina slept well 👻👻👻👻❤😂😂😂
Thank you so much Chris - you've probably seen all of our insta stories already too but we really had a fantastic time in both the Beamish museum and the Lumley Caste! Jay was dreaming about them fish and chips, and I must admit, the taste was amazing! The coal-powered cooker really made a difference and we loved the fact that it did taste like they were preparing it in the past 😬🐠🍟 It's also incredible you stayed at the same castle, because for us it was truly an amazing experience! Phil's stories made me wake up several times during the night haha (that's how the human brain works 🧠😜), but I'm really grateful that we got to experience all of that! ❤️
I used to live a mile away in Kip Hill and I, ashamed to say I have only been to Beamish Museum once even though I must have passed by a couple of hundred times. Fantastic place to visit and when your grandparents said something about the past that you could never imagine it’s there in Beamish.
49 shillings 11 pence (d of denari, Latin). 20 shillings to the pound 12d to the shilling - just under £2.50. Toilet meant more than it does today, it was washing too. There was no indoor plumbing, maybe a cold kitchen tap if you were lucky.
Thanks for all the insights! Yes, it was very interesting to see a completely different perspective of life compared to what we have today! Sometimes we don't see what luxuries do we have until we learn more about the history :)
@14:12 Yes, 49 shillings not pounds, the person behind the counter didn’t explain pre decimal pricing, and the letter S usually wasn’t shown, with the format used it wasn’t necessary.
What a wonderful walk around of Beamish Museum - We've been so many times but it is so lovely to hear people's reactions to the place... sometimes I forget how lucky we are to live nearby. Also, I must have driven past Lumley Castle more times then I've had hot dinners, but I've never been inside. This is such as great review of the castle and it's beauty, history and ghosts.
Thank you so much Karon for your kind words :) We tried to be as authentic as possible because that's exactly what you want to see - the true face of what you can expect 🙌 We need to admit that staying overnight at the Lumley Castle was quite an experience, so definitely would recommend it to each and one of you! Phil really did a great job with the stories from the past, the history of the castle and of course the stories about Lily's ghost 👻🏰
I remember my nan and grandad telling me that they were the first ones in the street to have a colour TV and when they were watching it the people in the street where stood looking through the window 😂 lol 🏴
I absolutely adore this period in time, its absolutely amazing. I have visited Beamish and it absolutely blew me away, it certainly didn't disappoint. Its an absolutely magnificent museum from the days gone by era. Thank you for sharing
Stayed at Lumley Castle a few times including for my 40 years service award. Every year the company I worked for would the 25 year, 40 year and occasional 50 year awards ! Nice that you were treat as royalty on your visit !
This is amazing Paul 😍🙏🏼 We can imagine that work events must be so much fun at the castle! We were so happy that Phil gave us a tour on arrival because the stories of Lumley Castle and the surrounding were creating such a great atmosphere! Hope to inspire more people to visit this place because it’s so much worth it ❤️
love this video Jay & karolina, I'm 70 and my partner, graham is 68, so took us back to years ago, especially in the electrical goods shop, old tv's etc, we remember them well lol x😊
This is amazing! We're glad we brought you all the best memories from your past Lynne and Graham! Your visit to Beamish would be quite nostalgic I bet! Thanks so much for watching 🥰
Hi jay and Karolina i have just watched your video on beamish open air museum and your lumley castle stay you have both done us proud an amazing video and so pleased you liked your time with us up north beamish is a fantastic place to visit as is lumley castle i think of myself as blessed to live very close to these places i have also visited lumley for grand afternoon tea with my family a few times its also a great experience thank you both again
Our pleasure Sandra! :) We have nothing to add - both places were simply amazing and if we manage to go back in the future we will definitely want to do everything we didn't the first time. Lumley Castle was a magical night and we would definitely like to do their Afternoon Tea experience 🧁🫖 and maybe even the Ghost Tour as Phil was really informative and funny and interesting about it all 👻
Glad you enjoyed it! Well said Nigel :) Yes, it was very interesting to see a completely different perspective of life compared to the one we have today! And it definitely helps to realize how easy it is to forget that we live in much simpler times, which we often complicate ourselves... But that's another topic 😇
So Scotland tour ended and back to England? I love the whole Beamish living museum and the haunted tour of the castle. Always wanting to do at least one haunting castle tour in the UK but my partner isnt into this paranormal stuff haha.
We have one more video from the UK which was Glasgow but we can’t upload that until later next week so we thought we’d upload this one as people have been waiting for it haha - we’re flying to China tomorrow ;)
We could also feel the excitement since before entering the sweet's shop, we were speaking to all them kids who were so excited for getting their sweets 🥹🍬🍫 Such a nice way to make your and your children's visit to this museum more enjoyable!
Yes, it was definitely such a special experience for us! It's amazing that it really was possible to sort of "teleport" to the bygone era! And the whole atmosphere was created by the people working there, because they told very interesting stories! No doubt it will be so magical around Christmas time 🎄✨❄️
its is ironic that you went to the chip shop after speaking to the lady that said you should visit Berwick as the tiles in the chip shop originated in a fish and shop in berwick and where moved to beamish after a refurbishment of the berwick shop.
In the "toy hospital" on the top shelf right hand side thats my mams teddy bear, over 70 years old. My mam was a volunteer here for many years even when I was a kid i was a volunteer on a tricycle. Was great fun and many fond memories.
🥹🥹🥹 This is so sweet that you recognised it and actually it’s fantastic to know that all the things in the living museum have come there from the “real” past times! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
@12:30 An odd thing to say, plenty of loose leaf available and consumed, I have it in my house, supermarket aisles full of different tea varieties, the deli/Tea room/hotels i visit serve loose leaf in a pot, with an infuser or tea strainer.
ofc theres loose leaf tea today lol. Its much better quality than bagged tea as well, due to it being able to expand freely and also not being chopped into tiny pieces
Couldn't agree more! Such a unique concept and we loved all the conversations with the staff members - the best transfer of knowledge and feeling as if you were actually in those times. Not to mention the food and delicacies also served in the old style! CLASS! 😍😋
The best value for money in the northeast from someone who lives up north ❤❤ lovely place, davies fish and chips cooked in dripping just like ya nanna cooked in good old days ❤
Hi Jay and Karolina I think I enjoyed this most of all the videos you have done, and I’m only halfway through. Being an older gentleman I can remember a lot of the things on display, especially those from the 1950’s when I was a child. I did go to Beamish, probably 20 years or so ago now, and I had a great time. As you said Jay there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Glad you've been enjoying watching our videos John! It's truly great to hear that you're willing to see the world through our eyes and can reflect on your past experiences too! ❤️ Beamish Museum has changed a lot over the past couple of years so it might be interesting for you to check it out this time too! :)
Thanks David! I don't know why but some people don't picture Sunderland in the nicest way... What would be your recommendations for things to do, see and eat? We should definitely give it a try one day and see for ourselves :)
When i was a kid, my friend lived in an ex police house. It still had the police sign on it. That one did have a holding cell that was used as my friends bedroom 😄 As for the Methodist chapel, my parents bought one almost identical to it as a home conversion. I still remember ripping out all that wood panelling to expose the stone work. All of this was within a 5 mile radius of Beamish 👍
That’s so interesting that you remember how it really was in the past 😬👍 It’s nice though that Beamish museum allows current visitors to get a glimpse of what it really looked like before!
Great to have a video of this length, and this must be the most comprenshive Beamish video out there! It's been many years since I've been there and it looks like they've added quite a lot. Looking forward to Glasgow and China now!
Glad it was helpful! And a good observation because they are adding something all the time - this year they opened an entire part of the 1950s Township where you can find a second Fish & Chips shop, old Coffee Shop, historic Milk Bar, Policemen's Houses, Toys Shop and many more! Little spoiler: we've just arrived in Manchester from where we're flying to CHINA tomorrow!!! Can't wait 😍🇨🇳
To do beamish properly it needs to be done over multiple days so you can spend a good amount of time in each area! They even have events on sometimes like the classic cars or tractors. So glad I live a 10min drive from Beamish as it allows me to easily spread my visits out.
True that! You're so lucky Matthew! We tried our best but it's impossible to check out everything on your first visit 😬😬 But it actually feels great that you can come back and visit the points you've never seen before!
Excellent tour of Beamish from you guys! Also, big up to the staff for their helpful explanations - especially the tv guy comparing 1950's prices todays! Great fun all round! 👍
Great point! We really enjoyed all the conversations with these people because they really gave us perspectives of times gone by! Thank you so much for watching :)
The large jug and bowl were for a face wash in the morning, the pot under the bed was a piss pot. Many families were poor and would sell or break their pots hence the saying “haven’t got a pot to piss in”. Great tour. I wonder if you guys end up living up here you seem to be loving it.
I recently watched a RU-vid video about the penny Licks kids used to buy in victorian day ice cream but never washed the little jars out kids became ill and some died regards to the police houses they where around in the 60s and 70s
That's interesting haha thanks for sharing! We found it extremely interesting that a lady from the staff members was able to tell us so precisely what life was like for the families of police officers 👀
the pink soap may be carbolic soap which was one of the most used at the time and helped with laundry and personal cleanliness the strange smell is probably phenol i worked in a plant that refined phenol and had a strong smell like the soap.
I spoke to one of the women who were part of the no votes for women. Apparently they were worried that the family and the whole of society would fall apart if women were no longer at home looking after the house and children. The suffragettes were marching around and getting people to join in and the men from the businesses were coming out to boo and jeer at them. It was so good. We're so lucky to have such an amazing place on our doorstep
WOW !!! that was a long video !!! Beamish is an amazing day out, but make sure you get there early because there is so much to see. I live in Weardale, and I watched Spains Farm being taken down brick by brick, it took a few years to be taken down and rebuilt ... but Covid came in between so that didn't help. My Daughter, her partner ... and our dogs .. went to see Spains Farm when it was up and running, they rebuilt it in a really good place, up a hill overlooking the Pit village. Lumley Castle put on Medieval Banquets in that banqueting hall, my daughter is one of the 'serving wenches', (proper name .. "Ladies of the Court") I highly recommend going to one, it is a really good night out.
I live 6miles from Beamish. It is in County near Chester -le -St and is in County Durham, hence is much more neater Durham than Newcastle. Loved the video. Hope you thoroughly enjoyed your visit. Keep up the good work! ❤
Very cool! You're probably a frequent visitor, aren't you Diane? 😍 We will continue our travels in the UK, but for now it's time for Asia - we flew to Beijing 2 days ago, so get ready for some videos from China soon :)
hi Both thanks so much for sharing the vidio about bremish tram and village, we realy enjoyed watching it very enjoyable , and both me and my wife cant travel far, so found it good
Yes, we can totally agree with you Lynne - it's a fantastic place to learn a lot about the past! And it's so interesting that you can also see some connections with today's times :)
The best video I've seen of Beamish. Its such a great place to visit. Every time we visit there a things we have missed the previous time. So much to see and do. Great that they have a year ticket isn't it not just a one time visit price. 😊 great video you guys.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thank you so much for your kind words 🥹 We’ll definitely be back because there’s so much to see, do and try so it would be sad not to visit Beamish again without exploring more of what is has to offer!
Fantastic vlog guys. My childhood, beef dripping from the butcher was used to cook chips. The fat smelt rank on 1st fry (it didn't affect taste). There are so many issues I could talk about this vlog! Great tactic Karolina, let the man go down the pit & earn the crust, whilst you bask in the sun! LOL! GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE!, & lots of chocs & love!!
Hahaha I love your comment 😍 - I really wanted to see the mine myself but well, the choice of shoes wasn't appropriate... Nevertheless, all the delicacies tasted great to us and we will definitely remember a lot from the history of the people who work there in the Beamish Museum - it was a really amazing surprise when we realised that through these conversations we can learn a lot about the past of North-East England :)!
Not 49 pounds and 11 pence, the price was 49 Shillings and 11 old pence. 20 shillings to the pound, 12 old pence to a shilling. 21 shillings was a guinea (GNS). High value items were often advertised in guinea’s right up to decimalisation day in 1971.
Been to Beamish about 20 times living in Middlesbrough it is not that far ... If you want to know what it was like in your nan and Grandad's day this is the best place to come I remember taking my nan , who when we boarded a tram , said I have never been on one of these since I was 18 and I was 18 then that was 42 years ago, lol . new subscriber 😂🏴
That’s such an interesting perspective Jack! We have no doubt that you really enjoy this living museum as you have been so many times. Now here's the question: which part is the best for you?! 😍
Excellent video, I live a few miles away from Beamish and make the most of the annual ticket, its an amazing day out, come back at Christmas, its magical Also been to Lumley Castle many times, once went to a Henry the 8th banquet, got dressed up in a Tudor dress and ate chicken legs with my hands, amazing
Wow, that sounds very cool Helen! This must have been such an authentic and unusual experience during the castle's banquet 🤩🐔🍗 Also, would need to definitely visit Beamish over Christmas time when we come on our second visit!
We're so glad to hear that! We had such a great time ourselves filming this Beamish vlog and staying overnight at Lumley Castle 😍 Sometimes it really doesn't seem real what we are doing!
Hi Jay, congratulations on the video you made for YOU WON’T BELIEVE HOW ENGLAND USED TO LOOK! 🏴 (Beamish Living Museum) 😄 Hi Karolina, as always you are fantastic and nice 😘
Thanks for that Umberto! It was truly an eye-opening day for us and we had lots of conversations with the staff members that were very knowledgeable too 😍 Could strongly recommend it to anyone since it’s fun learning history through experiencing it on our own!
Me and my dad used to cut the keys for lumley castle, grew up in Chester le street, as a kid I used to wander around the castle looking for the ghosts while my dad cut the many keys 😉
Loved the vids, keep up the good work. If you like what you've seen up northeast try northumberland coastline, quaint little fishing villages, castles especially bamburgh, beautiful rugged coastline ,with beautiful beaches ,oldest golf club in England, holy island ,Farne islands .I qaurantee you will love it
Lovely video of beamish I live just down the road so great fan of the place you are both such a nice couple so friendly with the children enjoy the UK the northeast is a great place to live
This is all too familiar to me because I grew up in a town called Heeley in Sheffield. I am familiar with all of the twentieth century things in Beamish. It's like stepping back into youth.
I live in West Yorkshire, about 12 minutes' drive from the National Coalmining Museum. I've been down twice, but being claustrophobic, didn't like it very much. The miners' lift was quite fast. I'm past that sort of activity now. The guided tours a bit over an hour. The hard hat incorporates a minor's lamp and a heavy battery in a shoulder case. There are models of women and children working there. They also used pit ponies. I think entry is still free, but you need to book. There is a cafe and gift shop.
Just for your information. A dab is a piece of fish sandwiched between potato slices then battered and fried. I don't think you find them outside of the Northeast .
Thanks very much - Beamish out door museum - old memories! I used to have a pair of the leather footie boots as a child! They used to have cork studs, 4 in front and 2 on the heel! The ball was made of leather with an internal rubber bladder which was then inflated; this was called a case ball or ‘casie’! The money was 49’ (shillings) and 11d (old pence) or 2 pounds, 9 shillings and 11 pence! The ‘d’ came from the old name for denarius - the old Roman currency! 67 gns is 67 guineas which would be 67 pounds and 67 shillings or 70 pounds and 7 shillings in the old British money! The HP was the ‘hire purchase’ method where you paid the money over a certain time period! The poor people used to buy expensive electrical goods using this payment method! The fish and chips she quoted 80 quid; this must have been in old money? Today’s price £11.75 which is reasonable! A Quid is a pound and came from the expression Quid Pro Quo which is Latin for ‘something for something’!
Our pleasure! We really loved our day out at the Beamish Museum and would definitely advise you to try them fish & chips because the taste was absolutely awesome! 🐠🍟
i visited beamish last thursday it so much more busy than when you i unfortunately never got to see as much as i'd have liked but it was my second visit .The smell from the chemist shop is divine . The castle is on my bucket list as is chillingham castle although it's haunted so karolina might not be impressed 😱.
Sorry to hear that but the good thing is that the yearly pass is allowing you to visit Beamish Museum multiple times throughout the year! I think they know it might get super busy and the inly way for people to experience it ALL, is to come back :) We absolutely loved the night at the Lumley Castle and Phil was amazing giving us his tour on arrival! If you like a small a thrill, we would definitely would consider booking the whole experience with him since he was super knowledgeable and mysterious in the same time!
We can imagine it's amazing to visit the museum from time to time when you feel like it! Also, just out of curiosity, do you sometimes go there to buy the foods for the day, or not? I mean bread, cookies, etc.? 🍞🥖 All the things we tried were so delicious 😂😂
@@JayandKarolina So sometimes we'll take a picnic. But as you discovered the food is too good to pass up. We tend to go the cafe in the 50s town and get the toasties, but we will pop in to the bakery and bring so bread home. I also recommend the cheese scones in the tea rooms
@@JayandKarolina yeah it has a beautiful seafront, the City center isn't amazing, but the last time I was there it had a lot of construction going on, suggesting it's heading in the right direction. We've only been there when we've been to away football matches there, we always stayed over at the Hilton hotel near the stadium, very friendly people indeed and a generally nice place in my opinion.
This is a great solution, especially for people who really want to visit this place several times a year and go through all the stages or taste everything in their own time 🥰
The Masonic Hall was taken down brick by brick, all numbered and rebuilt in beamish. Also the fish and chips are cooked in goose fat, just like the olden days.
The word Toilet comes from the French and it means all ablutions. Washing, bathing, and make up and hair as well as what England now calls a toilet. That is why the pottery set you saw had the washing bowl and jug and a Pot for under the bed people called a guzunder because it stored under the bed for needs in the night
I’ve been there many times. A wonderful day out. We were there at the 100 year rememberance of the First World War. It was so moving. Young lads on horseback only bairns like it was at that time. If anyone gets the chance to visit you will have lots to see with transport to get you around if you aren’t so mobile. ❤❤
It was certainly a very moving event 🙏🏼 Thank you for pointing out that transport is really possible for everyone - we were pleasantly surprised that there were even special buses for the elderly or disabled people!
As a Chester-le-Street resident all my life Ive learned more about Lumley Castle in the last 10 minutes Pity he didn't take you on the roof Red Tape I guess
