Hi everyone! To ensure the best viewing experience, please be sure to set your picture quality to 1080p for a clear and crisp image. This herd had a total of ten horses, all different breeds, and they were constantly communicating with each other. It was amazing to see how social and smart they are! Horses are prey animals that adapt to their surroundings. I hope you enjoy watching this video, and hopefully you learned something interesting here today :) 🐴 What have you noticed about the way horses interact in a herd? Share your thoughts!

I feel sorry for the light-color, lower-ranked horses who are moved out of the way by the black dominant horse of this herd. Is there enough hay in this hay bale to feed all 10 horses? You said there was another hay bale but only 1 horse feeding from it. It seemed some of the horses were skinny; see their hip bones, etc. They stay in the paddock 24/7 with a walk-out to the stables, so do they ever graze in the pasture? That mud was very slippery for them not to fall into. Very interesting herd dynamics; I just think the owner should separate the horses vis-a-vis their individual horse square bales of hay. We used to feed our Appies separately; otherwise, one greedy dominant one would eat all the other one's food. I like a robust mountain horse with some meat on her / his bones, especially for the winter coming up.

Agreed there's always an alpha in a herd knowing which one it is let's you know to feed the others well away maybe the one horse eating separately is the alphs female the others would give her room too

Thanks for your input! The horses have another feeder with plenty of hay and they graze all day in the grassy areas. I saw that they are fed grain up at the barn and each gets their full portion. The herd is made up of different ages, so their bodies vary. I didn’t notice any skinny horses, just some older ones that naturally look different. They’re all well cared for.

@@SoTheAdventure Good answer: some older ones that naturally look different. You know at the stable where you volunteer, Cash and Rosie share, and then your own horse, Duchess, and her young gelding bud, Finn. Duchess and Finn "harmonize" eating, one on the top tier of the trough, and another on the lower; then they switch. At the time, I said that whoever designed this feeding system really did a good job. Letting 10 horses feed out of 1 hay-bale feeder, when the leader chases everyone away, seems not the best choice. The post above thought that maybe the dom's mare was the single horse alone at the other feeder, so no one else could feed there either. Just saying: I feel sorry for the lower-ranked horses like the Appie getting shooed away every time they try to get a nibble, lol. Glad to hear everyone gets their grain and TLC, hopefully, including lunging workouts to retain muscle mass on the topline and hips.
