Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

When you bumped up your fertilizer rate your fan speed wasn’t high enough and product began to accumulate in your wing hoses because they are the longest. That’s why fertilizer was still coming out when the meter wasn’t turning. Also it would have created pressure variations in multiple hoses because air flow was restricted thus diverting air flow to the hoses that weren’t plugging. That’s why your rate was jumping all over the place.

On a really small scale spreading fertilizer, not through tubes but with a gas powered spinner, chunks are catchable (50lb bags have chunks you can catch and break up manually). But right above the opening is always an agitator (an auger or a straight bar welded perpendicular on a vertical spinning shaft) that spins around and breaks chunks I can't see. It keeps product flowing because there are ALWAYS chunks. Finer screens in the fill openings and an agitator look like things you've pointed out already as solutions. And solutions I think would improve things tremendously.

What was different between fields? You folded the wings. now you have an issue with one of the wings. If the line got pinched and prevents full flow to the wing, it will slowly fill up with product while still letting some through. Then when you turn the fan on, that excess product in the lines finally gets by the blockage Making it appear that the meter is still dispensing.
@SilentMono
@SilentMono Год назад
Came here to post exactly this, the lines are filling up and the fan is blowing it back out slowly hence the discrepancy and it ‘still dispensing’ An east check would be to leave it running the fan with the meter rolls of and see how long product comes out for.

Regarding the bins: I'm not a farmer, but i watch alot of farm tubers 🤣 I've noticed that no one ever regrets building a large bin. Build the biggest one you can, maybe the same size as the new bin the Larsons built. You could essentially put the corn from two of your existing bins into one, and maybe free one up for soybeans. That way, you could install cables into one of your 60k bins, and start rehydrating soybeans for more profit. Or, in a good year, just have a lot of capacity for corn.

I just started a new job working at a waste management transfer/maintenance station. My first job was power washing one of the route trucks to be repaired. This one was a front loader for getting dumpsters from restaurants and small businesses. Brother, power washing that tank cart was paradise compared to what I faced. Head to toe in a Tyvek suit, hardhat with face shield, rubber gloves that go to my elbows and a rubber apron. When you blast a pocket of maggots and a full diaper and the contents of both are now on your pretty white suit, you know you've arrived. You've reached the pinnacle of power washing. When I finished the inside of my face shield was just as filthy as the outside, on account of me throwing up several times. I thought $28/hour? that is great! Now I know...now I know.

Good Day Zach I could be wrong on this but we have experienced similar air balance issues on a different air cart. I would be willing to bet the problem started when you adjusted fan speed to account for more product going down in this video. If you could run similar fan speed as before it likely would have gone away. If it would be possible to run equal length primary hoses it would likely make a big difference. I’m just guessing but I will bet that is what changed when you moved from your chisel plow to your strip tiller is the length of your hoses coming off of air cart. It something to talk to Reddi about. There is a very delicate balance on tank top up pressure vs downstream air pressure. I hope this helps you out.

Lot less noise and adjustments and easier to run and monitor. Great setup. You asked about what size bin to put up next year. Larsons new bin is working great for them. They might have some info for you. Getting both of the tillers going will help get the ground black behind the combine. Great you have two setups to do that with. Looks like not too far away from your new building going up. Nice to have that done. More harvest to go yet. Go get em. Beautiful yellow corn looks good and moisture is ok. I would suggest an Amity cart out of North Dakota, they can get you a reliable machine meant for fertilizer , also very good support in getting the right fan speed and hose diameter for your application

Here in Ny, we run two Kuhn strip tillers with liquid tanks. One is a 12 row and the other is a 16 row

John Deere has many great machines but they definitely do not have the best of everything. Our Deere tank was constant problems too. We were always screwing around with it like you are. We got rid of it and had zero problems after getting rid of the deere tank. I’d say time to get a different air cart or a whole new airseeder. Bourgault is awesome. Flexicoil as well. I heard you say next year you are getting rid of it. That’s a very good decision. You should get rid of the cart and drill. Get a whole new airseeder. Don’t keep half. That’s my advice. I’m glad you had enough and decided to get rid of it. They are just not made well.

Love the red onion shirt! And it's definitely noticeable how much quieter your air system is!

Coming from a farm family in Indiana it is interesting to see the similarities/differences from here to Minnesota. It's funny, iold my dad about Zach's issues with the strip tiller. He laughed, cussed out the machine in Zach's favor, then said that he would've traded that thing off after 1 season. lol But he applauds you sticking with it Zach.

Had to synch up Foreigner Urgent audio to Zach's Name That Tune - and his air saxophone solo - then more fun to watch! Maybe in the future include a longer a clip of him rockin out to his favorite song in the cab and then we can just synch up the track on our own! Hope it's a great harvest! 😊

Looks like the Larson Farm struggle bus made it to your farm and as Chet would say the aircart is "junk", but I like the way you work keep grinding away.

I just watched your last vid with the strip tiller again, the cart setup is working as it should. As I understand what happened, it was all working, then you moved to a field closer to home to run out the tanks. Was the ground a little wetter there? The would restrict the air flow out of the injector. You raised the rate some and as you went across the field the outer rows started to drift into the lower parts of the 3" hoses, the longer ones will show that first. As that happened the monitor sees less product flow on those rows that lowers the average it needs to maintain and turn up the rate at the meters, thus the center (shorter runs) going up. That speeds up the drifting, less product, increase rate, till cascading failure alarms. When you stopped with the unit out of the ground you released the back pressure at the injector allowing the velocity to increase and clean out the product drifted in the hose of 11 and 12. That's why they had product coming out, not the carts fault. I have planted with an identical cart for years, it's very seldom the carts fault. With problems like this always start looking at the end of the hose run, not the start. If the product can't get out, it won't go in. I think your injectors are to restrictive to the air flow. Did you notice the air pressure gos up when you are in the ground? If pressure goes up, velocity gos down. Sound familiar?

I'd say you have worn sections on your meter rollers (or the housing) or you have too much airflow which can vacuum product past those JD rollers. Those are pretty much the only ways that product can get past a roller that is not turning. That will definitely throw your rates out of whack. Too much air flow will be most evident while you are sitting still as when it is in the ground you have the resistance of the ground around the openers and the resistance of the product in the lines which both reduce the air flow and will reduce the vacuuming.

Ha ha, I am low tech farmer myself, but from what I heard from my buddies is, that those computers can throw you off if they don't have a 100% ground connection or a steady 13Volt power supply. I would have tried one of the other tractors to pull it, then you know.

The only way you can have any product flowing from the injectors is you have drifting occurring in the hoses. From all the experience I have from working with air seeders, it looks to me that the hoses you have running to each row injector are too big in diameter for the air system you have. That is allowing product to slowly build up (or create drifts) in any dip in the position of the hose. Since you have a closed air pressure system, you should be able to drop down to 2" dia. hose from the cart to tillage unit. That will increase the speed of the product and help prevent drifting in the hoses. Hoses that have a small ripple effect on the inside surface will also improve the ability to keep the product suspended in the air flow for higher rates through the system. Another remedy would be to put a small cyclone cleaner to the top of each row unit to allow excess air flow that is needed to move the product to escape without going through the injector where it can be restricted enough to also allow the drifting in the hoses. You need lots of air flow to move fert.
