Your weekly Retro Computing discussion show returns! Rollercoaster Tycoon is 25 years old? Are you a fan of any of the Tycoon games? We chat about those classic SIM games, take a look at how somebody went to extraordinary lengths to create a new old Mac and more old tech has been spotted in new media.
All of that plus many other topics are covered in Dave's Housekeeping and we get your answers to this week's Community Question Of The Week.
We are sponsored this week by Pixel Addict magazine. The current issue has a guide to the CoCo computer and Tandy in general. Plus there is a celebration of the anniversary of King's Quest! Visit www.pixel.addict.media/ for the full run down on the latest issue.

Good morning and welcome to Saturday on BBC-1. In a moment, we join the Open University for another lecture from Tech Moan. At 9.30 we cross to the studio of "This Week in Retro" for a fun hour or two remembering we're all still alive. Retro Recipes may or may not follow later. That's your Saturday here on imaginary BBC-1.

The appearance of the Commodores in Halo season 2 episode 4, was on a shelf inside a vintage-shop on Reach, just before the planet's surface was turned to glass by the Covenant's fusion bombs... Which means that someone had taken these Commodores onto another planet. It also means that story-wise they were actually destroyed. - Funny you guys should talk about 3D printing you're own retro-computer, while I am in the middle of actually doing it. Because I am currently building a ZX Spectrum Next clone, based on the X-Berry PI for Robin (8 Bit Show and Tell), while listening to "This week in Retro". I have already completed its CherryMX based Spectrum+ keyboard, using "NaDoom's SpecCherry+ PCB", with my own home-baked and 3D-printed keycaps, and I'm now well into the process of 3D-designing the case; designing and test-printing one corner at the time... I'm actually printing a test while writing this. - It's neither going to look like a ZX Next nor a Spectrum+... it is going to be my own take on a Speccy-case. 😉

Theme Park designer Demis Hassabis was knighted just the other day for his AI company google Deepmind. He worked for Bullfrog all the way up to the late theme park games like Theme Park World I believe. Loved that era and all the tycoon games.
@JamesHanniganComposer
@JamesHanniganComposer 3 месяца назад
He'd left Bullfrog by Theme Park World (which I happened to work on) - for Lionhead, I think. I worked with him and Elixir some years later on Evil Genius and Republic, devising a new interactive music system in the process. There was a lot of talk about AI even back then, and it didn't surprise me when Demis moved into that field.

Interesting you brought up Populous in the "Tycoon" genre discussion. I remember back when SimCity first came out it was so new and unfamiliar to games critics that it ended up being referred to as a "God Game", a la Populous. Following that, games of that ilk tended to get lumped in with strategy games (which these days tend to be associated with combat-centric titles) before people recognising that "management sim" was its own distinct thing. It's regrettable that the "Tycoon" descriptor has, these days, become associated with mindless incremental/idle/microtransaction-rammed mobile/social games, because it used to be something of a prestigious badge of honour thanks to games like Railroad, Transport and Rollercoaster Tycoon. Unrelated: thumbs up for the Atari ST love from Dave. I've been rereading some old mags from just before the ST had widespread adoption, and it's thoroughly interesting to see the cautious optimism about it.

Good morning everyone. Dave - I bought the arcade1up star wars pinball last year for £300 new. It's scratched the pinball itch. It is modifiable, even in the simplest manner all thirty tables from arcade1up can be put on. It's not 4k by any means and the screen is smaller but it is good.

Chris Sawyer is a hero to a lot of us game developers. A single developer putting together all the systems and simulations into a game back then seems like a monumental task. The fact that he wrote it in assembly blows my mind to this day.

Hey Dave, have you considered VR pinball? I own an AtGames Legends Pinball HD and have not used it even once after getting a Quest 3 VR headset. Pinball in VR is a revelation. The depth perception, and the ability to lean in close to look at all the details, is amazing. While there are plenty of controller options, making a box with the proper pinball width and putting it on pinball legs really elevates the experience. You can even put sensors in it for tilt detection, solenoids for haptics, etc.

Dave says that Computer Space machines are rarer and more fragile because they were made of fiberglass instead of wood like most cabinets. Quite the opposite is true. While there are more Pong machines (though most are bootleg machines), Computer Space machines are much more likely to have survived. They're more rare because the game was a flop and only had a small production run (the curse of being the first commercial video game). But there are many examples of barns stuffed full of dozens of old arcade machines, but by the time someone goes to rescue them, most if not all have rotted to piles wood fiber while the Computer Space still looks almost pristine. And since the thing has no computer chips, it's very easy to repair (no "Oh, no! This one chip that was only made for this one game has gone bad!"). The only thing that might need fixing is the off-the-shelf black-and-white tv- but even those aren't in short supply. Unless something physically fell on the machine, a rediscovered Computer Space has a high chance of being usable and brought back to near mint condition.
@ThisWeekinRetro
@ThisWeekinRetro 3 месяца назад
Fascinating! The wood thing is definitely true, there's an Arcade Archive video of a "raid" where you can see the cabinets literally collapsing from sustained water damage!

the pet was on a shelf indeed. missing the complete front part keyboard unit with the curly cord. dangit i had that same pet back in the days. gave it to my now late neighbour because my father told me to get rid of some stuff. so for me seeing such a PET is pretty frustrating for me. does not make me happy seeing what they did clearing and cleaning the house out of the old neighbour when i came home of work. never saw that unit again. knowing he also had a functional rackmount PDP-11 "well mayby not the eleven" but i remember the lever switches and a handfull of teletypes with the punch ribbons. very emotional. yeah. it was that "porsche design" one but i had an original printer with it and as i remember it i had not the drives in the unit but a seperate double 5,25" drive bay in the same style ofcourse. cant remember the drives being in the machine case itself. do remember it popped open like a car hood tilting the top with the monitor backwards with a stand pole to keep it up and open during doeing inspection things. the commodore 64c missed it's back arrow key btw in the scene you just mentioned. and now i will shut up.

I arrived at the Tycoon games coming from the bloodline of German management simulators like Oilimperium, The Patrician, The Planner, and many others that already were business simulations that got enhanced by the open world part. Patrician III is actually an attempt of attaching sort of a citybuilder/colony sim the the older business simulation aspect.

Railroad Tycoon just had too high a entry level and learning curve to keep my interest. I do remember putting a fair bit of time into Coaster Works on the Dreamcast, same with Theme Park on the PlayStation. My assembly language programming is limited to the Vectrex, VIC 20, and ATARI 2600 though. The old Apple Macintosh project looks very interesting (not called a Mac at that time 😉). I was thinking of trying this with a PC-98, although I don't have the skill to 3D print the case! For a second there I thought you were going to say he had replicated a DEC PDP-1, with computer space running.

The pinball table is 32 inch 4k with 2 other hi def monitors at the top. The lag is the left flipper, which is being worked on. It can also play horizontal shootemups making it quite versatile, but yeah £2k is pricey lol one to watch though. My joy this week is the Rob hubbard book from c64audio. @ThisWeekinRetro totally agree. A crippled table is useless. After going to pinfest and looking at many actual tables and virtual tables, I think it's an exciting future for the gener. And playing vertical shootemups as well, then it's even more desirable. 2k though ! Yeah you need dedication for that, and yet in the past I bought pc towers near that cost lol

API is the right word, but most of what's done today doesn't use OS API's directly for much of the hard lifting. Instead developers are using Frameworks made by others which handles all the difficult tasks and call the APIs. So ya, bloat is crazy, and not just in gaming. Today, a "Hello World" is 200MB instead of 200 bytes.
