Lisa Biagiotti joins homeless youth social workers with Covenant House as they canvass Hollywood for 18- to 24-year-olds. An estimated 2,000 young adults sleep on the streets of Los Angeles every night. Down alleyways and side streets, Lisa meets Kristyna, Rimecco and Ray, and learns about what it's like to be young and homeless in Hollywood.
'It's just me, myself and I [on] these cold, hard streets.' -- KRISTYNA
ON THE STREETS is an ongoing video series on homelessness in Southern California
In this video series, Lisa Biagiotti sets out to put faces to the statistics. But 'the homeless' are united only in that they have no place to live. She meets people on the streets, learns about their experiences and explores the issues they face. Biagiotti is collaborating with Times reporters and our data team to plot where to take her camera next.

Nick... the guy in the beginning.... is literally such a good guy! I met him when I first moved to Los Angeles and was near the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. He asked if I'd like a bottle of water and asked some questions before recommending the Covenant House if I needed a place to stay. A year later I saw him driving by and said hello. He remembered my name and it really touched me that he remembered me in a sea of lost people in Los Angeles. I see how he interacts with people and he truly cares. I always think about him and how selfless people can be. It's difficult being broke and alone in a big city and not an easy thing to see everyday. Kudos to Nick.

I worked Sunset Blvd in Hollywood for 7 years as a prostitute. I am fortunate enough to have married a regular client of mine who is a proffesional , Social Worker for the Department of Social Services working for the County of Los Angeles. 19 years later and we are still married and living in Pomona. I work as the cook for the Salvation Army nursery school , church and community center here in Pomona. I NEVER TAKE FOR GRANTED HOW FORTUNATE I AM , WHERE I CAME FROM AND HOW FAR I'VE COME ! God bless all the homeless in Hollywood, my prayers are with you , never give up hope.

When a human being has a child they need to do whatever it takes to care for that child. It is NOT A RIGHT to have a child. It is a privilege!!!!! Own up to your responsibility and maybe just maybe America will be free of this disgrace in our streets all across America. Pitiful!!!

I don't think ive ever felt more free and genuinely happy, than when I was homeless. I didn't have the weight or social pressure of meeting someone else's standards, I was pretty much forced to interact with others on a personal level because we didn't have fb or bs social media at the time, so you had to look people in the eye and get to know who they truly were, I never had to be worried about getting fired and losing everything...of course there were trials and such with being seen as a less than human "homeless individual", but it was not nearly as bad as being some employee that could easily be replaced for the slightest indiscretion. I did well all through high school and graduated with a 4 year degree, but until I started traveling, I didn't know what it was like to truly be a free agent with a unique identity. I didn't sell drugs or rob anyone. I used my creativity everyday to make useful and durable things out of ordinary materials to sell and make a living. I met so many interesting people, hung out with celebrities in Hollywood, and could go and do as I pleased without having to ask permission from a boss. I never went without food and necessities, because I sold legal merchandise that people were willing to pay for, and I had no interest in fancy items. Once you decide to live outside the rat race, you realize not only who and what are most important, but how valuable you are as a person and how much you can do, creatively. I've since gotten back into the rat race, and I don't feel fulfilled at all. Family, friends, and most of all, God, are the only things you truly need to fill that void in your heart. Once I fix up my current car and can sell it for a better one, I fully intend to set back out on my journey to find my freedom again. There is nothing more empowering than deciding to take total control over your life, and being the authentic person you were born to be.

Realtors are to blame for homelessness. They should not be allowed to sell homes to investors instead of homebuyers and should not be able to set rents or home values. They should have to have degrees with ethics laws.

This is really weird problem. I mean it's 2020, we have technology that can make buildings so fast, yet people living on streets. Why are houses and apartments so expensive ?
@marcvslicinivscrassvs7536
@marcvslicinivscrassvs7536 2 года назад
A lot of new millionaires from tech and crypto can afford to move anywhere. They typically choose the west coast. Then they raise prices, causing the original people in those areas to move to other cheaper places. That raises the value of property in previously less desirable places. Then you have real estate investors and foreign investors also buying up a lot of property. So apartments and even small homes are very expensive to rent. Then all the problems with drugs. It has just become crazy expensive here in the States.

Hmmm, I don't know... I live in Canada and have to work 2 jobs to be able to pay rent, bills and raise my child..1 job didn't cut it... I stay far away from drugs... This guy doesn't look or seem into drugs whatsoever, Also he's most likely supporting himself and the 3 others being the only one with any income.. The stuggle is real! 😫😫😫

The Dream Center is a place in Los Angeles that helps people to get off the streets. It’s free, feeds you, gives you a bed. I know a lot of people that leave it because they don’t want to follow their rules and say they prefer the streets. Go to their web page and see what the rules are.

I am commenting before video is over, but most of the young people have families, but the families don't want them. She came from Julie she said. They set you up with a program but most just leave, they don't like the rules. Most can work though. They gave to gave an address. thanks

Homeless youth baffle me. The US...even the world...caters to youth. So much default opportunity. Is the opposite of the attitude toward those over 50 who are homeless. In Los Angeles, the entertainment industry will employ them as background...there is so much retail work targeting kids. I see them about and it is as if the homeless experience is a lark.
