This week we get to work more on our dream of making our own wine, pressing the grapes and having a lot more than we had planned for. As the weather is cooling we can get back to our projects making this abandoned old barn into a beautiful homestead, Carissa builds a new greenhouse and Iwan gets to work on the driveway.

Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

Hello there. When I was working has a full time dry stone Waller. In the winter months it would rain for weeks on end. We had to work being on peace work. If you didn't work. You didn't get paid. That's one of the Hazards of working outside. You would pray for fine weather.

Had to take a day to digest all the mud slinging. I suppose because we follow you, Project Portugal and IP we were caught completely off guard by the drama. Being a new youtuber myself you have to have a thick skin when it comes to social media and when following channels you become almost invested emotionally with the people and channels you follow. So when accusations get flung without context or foundation it can be shocking to all involved. The truth will always come out... which may have already happened incedently through a blazing fire... literally! I just want to say... stand strong... thank you for sharing your lives with us... it's not easy to be out there... this I am learning very quickly!

thanks for your comment Bronwen! we were caught off guard by the drama too. something we hope to avoid in our lives as much as possible. There are some downsides to sharing our lives publicly but there are also many beautiful things that come from it too, I hope as a new RU-vidr you get a lot more of the positive and brush off the negatives as best you can if they do show up 💛

Can I suggest putting wooden stakes in each corner and tape them to the frame as even moderate wind will make it act like a sail!

The wine when boiling cleans it self, solid part on top, liquid on bottom. You can poor the clean wine out the big bucket with a tap on the bottom. This clean wine is the best quality, then you squeeze the solid part and get a second quality wine with many solid particles. I'm afraid the way you did the wine kept all cloudy and must rest longer and change bowls time to time to remove solid particles on the botom. Advice, talk to your neighburs and watch them doing every step. Cheers.

I am so sorry for some people's behavior towards you and project Portugal... You don't fight hate with hate, specially with no reason for it! Doing this and exposing private conversations only shows the kind of person he is and brings nothing good to someone that needs peace. Also, makes him no better than the ones he criticizes. Writing lies about you only validates many of the negative comments written on their video, makes no sense... Stay strong and stay yourself, I am not leaving you!! ❤️

So lovely to see you working and building your happy life. Can I ask if anything much is growing beneath your oak trees? I think the tannins in the fallen leaves can be very acidic and, with time, can make the soil somewhat hostile for many plants. You may need to balance the acidity in your garden soil, if you plan to continue using oak leaves for mulch. ....'Just a thought, with the hopes of being helpful, not critical.

Little tip for next year Use a wooden barrel formerly used for wine or brandy which will be better for the wine flavouringwith a tap at the bottom When the natural fermentation has stopped just open the tap to release the free flowing juice which will have the best flavour. Then use the press to squeeze out the remaining pulp which which will have a stronger maybe more dry bitter taste to then add or blend to taste to the natural juices Our family were winemakers in europe approx a century
@FrankieOffGrid
@FrankieOffGrid Год назад
Ooh I like this idea! So you use the barrel upright, take the lid off and use that for the primary fermentation?
@michaelbarbato8403
@michaelbarbato8403 Год назад
@@FrankieOffGrid My folks always used barrels with top off and plug or tap in bottom They moved to UK in 1964 In latter years winemaking grapes were imported from italy.They used to make 1500 litres for family and friends use.Barrels that formerly housed brandy were purchased and they added the taps and removed tops.The grapes selected were always very ripe mainly montepulciano red and nothing else was needed as they naturally contain sugars and yeast which meant after passing them through a mangle to mash them over the empty barrel the grapes were left to naturally ferment normally approx 8 days until the natural fermentation stopped which meant all sugars and yeast were used up so in essence it wasnt under or over fermented. Then the tap or plug would be released letting the best wine out. Then they would put the remainder in presses like yours but larger and press out remainder which would be drier and more bitter which they would blend with original depending how dry or sweetervthey wanted it.The juices would be left in 55 litre demijons allowing any sediments/impurities to deposit at the bottom after which time they would suction it out into a clean demijon until no more sediment Then decant into 20 litre bottles and down to 2 litre bottles It would be drunk after a couple of months and longer as it lasted Normal alcohol levels 17% and no headaches or acidity when drinking because no additives or preservatives used. The fermentation all took place in the barrel and from then on its just maturing. I know there are many other techniques around the world but this is a simple traditional italian method kind of fool proof and relstively simple not time consuming the main work being the crushing of grapes through mangle and the pressing along with cleaning containers with water only. When i was a child in italy we still used to crush the grapes with our feet although i recall we started using wellington boots🙂

Nice content guys. Wouldn't it help to start the wine clarification by using a screen in the press? Simple fix, if you heat up the bottom of the funnel and press into the demi-johns a few inches I know from experience you'll avoid those frustrating 'boil overs' and loosing some of that hard won fermented wine product. Alternatively a simple wooden holder to support the funnel. Great to know you've had some rain recently, must be a relief.

Hi Theo, possibly in the future, at the moment i don’t think it’s possible for us to sell it and ship it. The plan is to plant a lot more vines and start selling them. Watch this space 😅

Another amazing video this week, but can i say the music was sooo loud i was having to adjust volume every time between speech and non speech times quite significantly 😖 - enough to go back a few times because i missed what was said. Stay safe through theweather change.

Sorry about that Deborah, I totally forgot in the final edit to turn the music back down 🙈 hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable to watch and hopefully it’ll remind me to always check in future videos!

Once again, very nice video, thank you ! A small question I've been wanting to ask you for a while : why don't you rehabilitate the little stone house on your land as a living space ? Is it a question of legislation ? Thank you for tour answer 🙏❤
@FrankieOffGrid
@FrankieOffGrid Год назад
It’s on the list! Our plan is to be sleeping in the barn by next summer. It’s mostly finances to be honest, the roof will cost €1.5k and we need to get that done before we start on the floor and walls really.

@@FrankieOffGrid Thank you very much for your answer! I thought I had heard or understood that you could not use this house. Great project! I'm French, and I'm considering living off-grid in Spain (my origins) and I have a lot of questions about what is legal or not on rural land... Thanks to both of you for helping me with my thoughts ✨

Just an observation, your seats on the bike need to be higher as the elongated leg only needs a slight bend, position almost straight ,)

I think that setup is mostly for road bikes, you’d be in some pain riding our track while sitting down.
