I married my wonderful husband almost 27 years ago. My kids were 15,13 and 9 when we got married. I had been married to my kids’ dad for 12 abusive years. My husband loved my kids like his own and helped me finish raising them. He was such a great example of a step parent that my oldest son was comfortable becoming a stepdad. My husband’s son calls me mom and he is my son. He was 18 when his dad and I got married. Not everyone’s story is like mine but I met and married such a wonderful man. I am truly blessed. My husband and I married when my kids were 11 and 9. I told him when he proposed to me that he had to get their consent before I could give him a yes. So he went to talk to them about it, and they put him through the wringer! Asked him a ton of really good, smart questions before they approved him. They walked me down the aisle at our wedding... and then they stayed with us at the altar, because we took vows to them as well as to each other. We felt that if all four of us were becoming a family, we should pledge ourselves to them as loving parents, just as we did to each other as loving spouses. (We didn't invite them to make any back; that wouldn't have been appropriate for children, who should be free of such strict commitments.) Eight and a half years later, we've forged a strong team along with their father and stepmother that's raised them into young adulthood. My kids adore him and vice versa. If I hadn't believed he was the best possible person to help me bring them up with love and security, I never would have married him. I don't understand people who don't put their children first. I've done things wrong in raising them -- I don't know any parents who haven't. But my mistakes have been genuine mistakes, not negligence or callousness or selfish choices on matters vital to their care. If a parent can't be the adult in the household, they shouldn't have children. Adults don't do everything right, but at minimum they need to be able to provide for their children, protect them from unsafe people and situations, and teach them basic responsibility by example.

@@terrilynn1110What an ignorant thing to say. Don't blame drugs for the poor choices that people make. Blame the people. I'm a recovering addict with 15 1/2 years clean. I always had a conscience. Drugs don't take away your conscience, they just make it easier to forget that you know what's right. If you're looking for a way to avoid feeling guilty for your choices and actions, that's what drugs will provide. If you're looking to escape the pain of other people's decisions and how they impacted your life, that's what drugs will provide. Remember that anytime you generalize in such a broad, sweeping manner, you're going to be wrong, every time, because no group is a monolith. People are individuals, with their own thoughts, motivations and experiences. Don't lump entire groups of people together or make statements about things with which you clearly have no knowledge.

I pray for a few things: - The victim's family to find peace. The daughter is strong and her finding forgiveness is a start; yet as she said, only Jesus can help her with that. 🙏 - The defendant's sister be removed from her mother's care FOREVER so she has a fighting chance 3. That the defendant seek repentance from God the Father and receive salvation from Jesus. It's horrible how he grew up, but he may see daylight again. But he'll have to experience a change and get help. I hope it's offered and taken. 35 year sentence, and he's a teen. Lord God in Heaven. - And his mother; I don't think she gets it. This is also on her. Please wake up lady. May the victim rest in Peace. Like the judge said, his prescence here is missed and who knows what else he had to offer this world. The same with this kid. You guys miss the point of having her up there. It actually did help him. Judge Boyd could have thrown out the plea. The plea is only an agreement between defense and prosecution that prosecution won't ASK for more than the bargain says. If the judge thought it too lenient then she could say no and sentence him the way she wants to. Having the mom and step-dad up showed the judge how worthless his parents were in order to capitalize on the narrative that he had a bad childhood and upbringing. The lawyer is going to drive that home in order to make sure that the judge sentences him in line with the plea agreement which was minimum of 15 years and a max of 35. Seeing as he could have gotten life for his crime, Judge Boyd obviously heard what they were trying to show her and agreed to plea bargain, even though she made it the max.

When the (extremely good) Prosecuting Attorney started his rapid fire questioning notice how mom was caught off balance and didn’t know how to respond (beautifully executed interrogation technique) that I would have loved seeing him push a bit further. This guy is not a child, he needs to have the experience of consequences for his actions. HOWEVER, that being said, he didn’t stand much of a chance with the “parenting “ he WAS’NT given. And yet they are allowed to drink, do drugs, vote, drive cars, purchase weapons etc all before their brains are developed. They can't have it both ways: do all those things and when it goes wrong and someone dies say it's not their fault because their brains aren't developed.

BS. Stop making excuses. We have many 18-25 year old males and females that are responsible and respectful to others. I know some children are negatively affected by their upbringing but everyone can ask for help unless mentally ill (has no cognitive ability to think rationally). No excuses in this case!

That's not true. It's a choice. My husband's childhood was as bad as a person's childhood can possibly be, in every way, but he grew up strong, honest, hardworking, and loyal. He made a choice at 17 to run as far and as fast as he could, and he did exactly that. He could have easily wound up like this kid, but he made the conscious decision not to. He's the best parent I've ever seen, and is so much more than the way he was raised. This young man had a chance, he simply chose not to take it.

@@mellveeI see this sentiment a lot, but it's not a binary thing, not all criminals had messed up homes, and not everyone from a messed up home will be a criminal. But what you will find is the majority of people in prison had bad homes or mental health issues, it doesn't excuse their crime, no one is saying they shouldn't be punished, but we can acknowledge that having terrible parents and upbringing is more likely to put you on a bad path than having a happy childhood, I mean it's just common sense right?

The "Horrible mother." Part was both sad and satisfying. The way Judge Boyd made sure to slightly raise her tone and emphasized "Horrible Mother" was there to let his trash mother know she's trash and everyone in the court knows she's trash.

Judge Boyd is trying to hint to the defense lawyer to wrap it up instead of repeating the facts by fidgeting with paperwork and not giving the lawyer her undivided attention.
